
Round 7 Feature Match: Khoa Van Phan vs. Michael Brandon Aviles
In this round’s Feature Match, we have two Duelists that are local to the Anaheim area. Khoa Van Phan is using the Dracotail Deck, while Michael Brandon Aviles is playing a pure K9 Deck! These Duelists each have a 5-1 record, so a win here will be extremely helpful to help them make it to Day 2 and beyond. It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Phan opened with Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Dracotail Phryxul, and two copies of Dracotail Faimena.
Aviles won the die roll and chose to go first! He started by Normal Summoning K9-04 Noroi and activating its effect, but Phan Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, Aviles activated the effect of K9-66a Jokul, Special Summoning it and K9-17 Izuna from hand and sending K9-ØØ Lupis to the Graveyard. On resolution, Phan activated the effect of Dracotail Faimena, using Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Dracotail Phryxul, and Dracotail Faimena in his hand to Fusion Summon Dracotail Arthalion! He Set Ketu Dracotail and Rahu Dracotail to his backrow, and used Arthalion’s effect to return all of Aviles’ monsters to the hand. Aviles then Special Summoned both Izuna from hand and Lupis from the Graveyard, then used the two to Xyz Sumon K9-17 “Ripper” and search for K9-66b Lantern. He activated Lantern’s effect, Special Summoning it and the Izuna from his Graveyard, then activated Lantern’s effect to search for “A Case for K9”. He activated Case, adding another Izuna to hand, then used Izuna and Lantern to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight. He activated N.As.H. Knight’s effect, attaching it with Phan’s Dracotail Arthalion, used it to Xyz Summon CXyz N.As.Ch Knight, then used its effect to Xyz Summon Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade and destroy Phan’s face-down Ketu Dracotail. Finally, he Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn.
Phan drew Nibiru, the Primal Being for turn. He activated his face-down Rahu Dracotail, but Aviles Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Phan conceded.
Duel 2
Phan chose to go first this time! He opened with Droll & Lock Bird, Dimensional Barrier, Dracotail Urgula, and two copies of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion. He Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn.
Aviles started by activating Chaotic Elements, searching for K9-66a Jokul. On resolution, Phan activated the effect of Droll & Lock Bird, preventing Aviles from adding cards from his Deck to his hand for the rest of the turn! Next, Aviles activated the effect of K9-66a Jokul in his hand, Special Summoning it and K9-ØØ Lupis. He then Tributed Lupis to Tribute Summon Artifact Mjollnir, then used Mjollnir and Jokul to Xyz Summon Imperial Princess Quinquery! He activated Quinquery’s effect, but Phan chose to respond with the effect of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion. Aviles then Special Summoned K9-17 Izuna from hand, as well Lupis from the Graveyard, and proceeded to the Batlte Phase. He attacked Phan’s Life Points directly with Lupis and Izuna, then used the two to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”, and ended his turn.
Phan drew Branded Fusion for turn! He activated it, but Aviles Chained the effect of Retaliating “C”. The Retaliating “C” was Special Summoned to Aviles’ side of the field, as Phan banished Fallen of Albaz and Dracotail Mululu to Fusion Summon Lubellion the Searing Dragon. He activated its effect, discarding Dracotail Urgula to use Lubellion and Fallen of Albaz to Fusion Summon Khaos Starsource Dragon! He activated Starsource’s Dragon’s effect, destroying Quinquery and Retaliating “C”, then entered the Battle Phase and used Starsource Dragon to attack K9-17 “Ripper” before ending his turn.
Aviles started his turn by again activating Chaotic Elements, this time choosing to search for K9-66b Lantern. He then activated Lantern’s effect, Special Summoning it and Jokul from the Graveyard. Here, Phan activated Dimensional Barrier, preventing Aviles from Xyz Summoning for the rest of the turn! Aviles activated the effects of Jokul and Lantern, searching his Deck for K9-04 Noroi and “A Case for K9”, respectively. He activated Case and searched for K9-17 Izuna, then ended his turn.
Phan drew Fallen of Albaz for turn! He Normal Summoned Albaz, then used Albaz and Aviles’ Lantern to Fusion Summon Lubellion the Searing Dragon! He entered the Battle Phase, attacked over Jokul with Lubellion, and used Starsource Dragon to attack Aviles’ Life Points directly. In Main Phase 2, Phan used Starsource and Lubellion to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres, then ended his turn.
Aviles Normal Summoned Retaliating “C” and attempted to proceed straight to the Battle Phase! In the Battle Phase, Phan activated the effect of Spheres, Tributing it to return Retaliating “C” to Aviles’ hand, then Special Summoned Bystial Magnamhut from the Deck and activated its effect to search for a Dragon-type monster during the End Phase. In Main Phase 2, Aviles Special Summoned K9-17 Izuna from hand and K9-ØØ Lupis from the Graveyard, then used the two to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”. He activated Ripper’s effect, searching for K9-66a Jokul and Setting K9-X Forced Release to his backrow. He activated Jokul’s effect in hand, Special Summoning it and K9-04 Noroi from hand, used Jokul’s effect to search for another Lantern, then used Noroi and Lantern to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight. He used N.As.H. Knight’s effect to attach it with Bystial Magnamhut, Xyz Summoned CXyz N.As.Ch Knight, and used its effect to Xyz Summon Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade, then ended his turn. During the End Phase, Phan resolved Magnamhut’s effect, searching for Dracotail Mululu.
Phan drew Dracotail Pan for turn! He Normal Summoned Dracotail Mululu, activating its effect, but Aviles Chained the effect of Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade to negate it. WIthout any other plays available, Phan conceded.
Aviles takes the victory, and is one step closer to making Day 2 with a 6-1 record!
