Duelist Interviews: 5 Questions About Genesys
The coolest new way to play Yu-Gi-Oh! is the new Genesys Format! Here at YCS Anaheim, we’re officially premiering Genesys as a part of the YCS Circuit. There are a ton of Duelists here this weekend that are JUST here to play Genesys.
I sat down with a few Duelists this morning to ask them 5 questions about Genesys and to see what they had to say!
Our first Duelist is Jack Pruit from Modesto, California

Q: “What are some Decks you’re excited to play in Genesys?”
Pruit: “I’m excited to play three Decks: Time Thief, Madolche, and Metaphys.”
Q: “What Genesys Deck are you playing this weekend?”
Pruit: “I’m playing Madolche for the Qualifiers.”
Q: “How are you allocating your points while building your Decks?”
Pruit: “My points are all for the generic power cards. The ‘Forbidden’ Spells, Book of Moon, and monsters I can use from my hand like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring.”
Q: “What kind of Decks are you excited to play against in Genesys?”
Pruit: “The Decks that aren’t seen as much in Advanced Format! I’m excited to see Decks like Paleozoic again. Also, it is cool to see Ritual Decks that never got their chance to shine, like Nephthys.”
Q: “Alright, last question… Have you played in a Genesys tournament yet?”
Pruit: “Not yet, but I’m super excited to do so this weekend! It’s the whole reason I’m here!”
Next up, we have another California Duelist, someone a little more local to Anaheim than Mr. Pruit: Jacob Ruelas, from Moreno Valley!
(Jacob was unavailable for a photo)
Q: “What are some Decks you’re excited to play in Genesys?”
Ruelas: “Honestly, Toons! That’s my favorite Deck. I’m also excited for Invoked since most of the Deck is at 0 points. For my Toon Deck, I’m excited that Quaking Mirror Force is even better without Link Monsters, and my Toons just attack directly over everything!
Q: “What Genesys Deck are you playing this weekend?”
Ruelas: “I’m not playing in the Qualifiers. I want to see how the format shapes up before I dive into it. I do plan on playing in the events after the Qualifiers are done. You know I’m going to use Toons!”
Q: “How are you allocating your points while building your Decks?”
Ruelas: “Mostly into the Side Deck, to be honest. A lot of the in-hand monster effects are worth points so I feel like I don’t need to worry about cards like Mulcharmy Fuwalos or Mulcharmy Purulia. Instead, I’m playing cards like Evenly Matched and Solemn Strike.”
Q: “What kind of Decks are you excited to play against in Genesys?”
Ruelas: “I’m excited to see how the big Decks in Advanced Format can do, like Dracotail and Vanquish Soul. I feel like my Deck (Toons) got a bit of a buff, so I want to see how it can compete with the meta right now.”
Q: “Alright, last question… Have you played in a Genesys tournament yet?”
Ruelas: “I’ve only played it in Remote Duels with my friends and in person. I haven’t played a tournament yet.”
We aren’t just interviewing Duelists from California today. I also have Nick Sawchuk, from Minneapolis, MN.

Q: “What are some Decks you’re excited to play in Genesys?”
Sawchuk: “Ghoti, P.U.N.K., the Zombie World Deck. I’m only sad I can’t play Orcust because the Link Monsters don’t exist…”
Q: “What Genesys Deck are you playing this weekend?”
Sawchuk: “I’m playing in the Main Event, but if I play any Genesys this weekend, it’ll be Ghoti.”
Q: “How are you allocating your points while building your Decks?”
Sawchuk: “The cards themselves bounce between combo extenders and defensive cards. I’m using cards like Dimension Shifter because it not only promotes my plays, but also halts my opponent’s plays. Gold Sarcophagus is another really cool card because of everything it does for Ghoti.”
Q: “What kind of Decks are you excited to play against in Genesys?”
Sawchuk: “I’m excited to play against Tombkeeper and other Spell & Trap-heavy Decks. My Ghoti Deck has a really good matchup against all of those Decks because I just get to play through everything.”
Q: “Alright, last question… Have you played in a Genesys tournament yet?”
Sawchuk: “Yes! My local OTS, Viral Card Games, has started hosting Genesys tournaments.”
Finally, a Duelist from my hometown of Stockton, California, I had to interview Deilys Adrian Fornaris!

Q: “What are some Decks you’re excited to play in Genesys?”
Fornaris: “Vanquish Soul and Tearlaments”
Q: “What Genesys Deck are you playing this weekend?”
Fornaris: “Vanquish Soul, it’s the best Deck.”
Q: “How are you allocating your points while building your Decks?”
Fornaris: “Uhh, let me grab my Deck! Most of it is to consistency cards and things like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring… It is a FIRE for Stake your Soul!”
Q: “What kind of Decks are you excited to play against in Genesys?”
Fornaris: “Literally EVERYTHING! I saw so many different Decks. I saw someone playing Fabled, Madolche, and Dragon Rulers. People are getting to play their favorite Decks, and that’s really cool.”
Q: “Alright, last question… Have you played in a Genesys tournament yet?”
Fornaris: “Not yet! I’m in the next Qualifier, so far I’ve only played with friends.”
