The Genesys Invitational is down to the Top 8! Yesterday we saw Siming Yang, from Santa Clara, CA, and his Exosisters in his Genesys Qualifier Feature Match, where he narrowly lost in the finals. He’s redeemed himself today, making it all the way to the Top 8! His opponent is Jordan Kawar, from San Diego, CA, using a Runick Radiant Typhoon Deck!

Yang has allocated his points toward 3 Dimension Shifter, 3 Dark Hole, 3 Solemn Judgment, 1 Solemn Strike, and 1 Thunder King Rai-Oh. The Exosisters cost no points, so he was able to fill in the Deck with board breakers for going second and defensive traps when going first.

Kawar spent his points in a more straightforward way: 3 copies of Pot of Greed! The remaining points are for 2 Droll & Lock Bird in his Side Deck.

Duel 1

Kawar won the dice roll and played first. He had a hand of Runick Tip, Runick Fountain, Runick Slumber, and 2 copies of Runick Freezing Curses.

Kawar activated Fountain, then played Tip, banishing one of Yang’s cards to get Runick Flashing Fire. He used Fountain to put Tip back on the bottom of his Deck and draw Radiant Typhoon Vision. He played Vision, drawing another Fountain and Slumber, discarding Slumber. He Set Flashing Fire and both Freezing Curses to finish.

Yang played Exosister Pax, adding Exosister Carpedivem to his hand. He activated Exosister Martha’s effect, Special Summoning it and Exosister Elis. He Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh! He activated Carpedivem, and Kawar responded with Slumber on Martha, then Flashing Fire to destroy Elis, banishing cards from Yang’s Deck in the process. Fountain let him recycle his Runick cards to draw Vision, Tip, and Pot of Greed. That triggered Martha’s effect to Xyz Summon, using it as the material to play Exosister Mikailis. Carpedivem activated, declaring Freezing Curses, and Kawar Chained his Set copy of Freezing Curses to try and negate Mikailis. Yang responded to that with Mikalis, banishing Fountain. Yang used Sakitama’s effect to Normal Summon it, stacking it with Rai-Oh for Exosister Kaspitell. Its effect put Elis in his hand. He then used Ichiki Sayori-Hime’s effect to Normal Summon it, putting Aratama in his hand. He Special Summoned Elis, then Xyz Summoned Exosister Gibrine. Its effect strengthened his Exosisters enough to wipe out Kawar’s Life Points in one Battle Phase!

Duel 2

Kawar started this time with Pot of Greed, Freezing Curses, Slumber, and two copies of Radiant Typhoon Vision.

In the Draw Phase, he played Vision to add Mystical Space Typhoon to his hand. Then he played another Vision, drawing Runick Destruction and Radiant Typhoon Swen, then discarding Destruction. He Special Summoned Swen, adding Radiant Typhoon Chant to his hand. He used Chant to get Radiant Typhoon Eldam to his hand. He Special Summoned Eldam, which put Radiant Typhoon Krosea in his hand. He activated Pot of Greed, then Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy his Pot. He drew Freezing Curses and Flashing Fire. His Quick-Play Spell let him Special Summon Krosea, which put Radiant Typhoon Mandate and another Mystical Space Typhoon in his hand. He stacked Eldam and Swen for Totem Bird in Attack Position. He Set 5 cards, everything but one Freezing Curses.

In the Draw Phase, he used Mandate to shuffle back three Radiant Typhoon spells from his Graveyard to draw Flashing Fire. Yang activated Martha’s effect, Special Summoning it with Elis. He Normal Summoned Exosister Irene, then Special Summoned another Elis from his hand. He stacked Irene and Elis for Exosister Mikailis. He used its effect to add Exosister Returnia to his hand. He moved to the Battle Phase, sending Mikailis to attack Totem Bird. Kawar flipped Slumber to protect his Totem Bird. Yang Chained Mikailis’s effect targeting Totem Bird. Kawar flipped Freezing Curses to negate Mikailis. Yang banished six cards due to the Runick Spells. Mikailis won the battle against Totem Bird, but Slumber kept it safe. In Main Phase 2, Yang Set three back row cards. In the End Phase, Kawar used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy a Set Dragon’s Mind. Then, he flipped Flashing Fire to destroy Mikailis.

Kawar drew a Swen. He Special Summoned it, using its effect to add Chant to his hand. Yang responded with Dragon’s Mind, Setting it on the field at the cost of 2500 Life Points. That triggered Martha’s effect, and Kawar responded with Flashing Fire to destroy Martha. Yang responded with Exosister Pax, letting him Special Summon Exosister Stella in Attack Position. Flashing Fire destroyed Martha, and now both of Yang’s other Marthas were banished!

Kawar used Chant to get Eldam, and Special Summoned that to get Krosea. He used the effect of Mandate, shuffling in three of his Radiant Typhoon cards to draw his third Eldam. Stella and Elis activated, and Kawar used Freezing Curses to negate Elis. Stella brought in Mikailis. Kawar Special Summoned Krosea, and Mikailis banished Totem Bird. Krosea’s effect activated, and Yang responded with Returnia to banish Mandate and Krosea. Krosea’s effect resolved, putting Radiant Typhoon Vision and Mystical Space Typhoon in his hand. He played Vision, drawing Destruction and Meghala, discarding Eldam. He Special Summoned Meghala, then used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Dragon’s Mind again. Meghala brought Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Vibrant Vortex! He Xyz Summoned Number 3: Cicada King in Defense Position, using Eldam and Swen.

Yang Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh, stacking it with Elis for Gibrine in Defense Position. He detached a material for its effect, and Kawar responded with Cicada King targeting Gibrine. Yang used Gibrine’s other effect to negate Cicada King, and Kawar used Varuroon to negate and destroy Gibrine. Since Cicada no longer could target Gibrine, its initial effect still boosted Mikailis’s ATK. He used Mikailis to get Carpedivem in his hand. He activated it, and Mikailis attacked Varuroon. He used Carpedivem’s effect targeting Destruction, which Kawar simply activated to destroy Carpedivem.

Kawar drew Freezing Curses and Set it.

Mikailis destroyed Meghala in battle.

Kawar drew Radiant Typhoon Chant! He activated it, and Yang knew this Duel was over – he conceded with 16 minutes remaining on the clock.

Duel 3

Kawar began the final Duel with Flashing Fire, Tip, Freezing Curses, Radiant Typhoon Chant, and Pot of Greed.

Yang started by Normal Summoning Exosister Sophia, then used Ichiki’s effect to Normal Summon it as well, adding Martha to his hand. He Xyz Summoned Mikailis, which put Exosister Vadis in his hand. He used Martha’s effect to Special Summon both it and Elis, then Xyz Summoned Kaspitell. That let him get another Martha in his hand. He used both Xyz Summon monsters to play Exosisters Magnifica. He Set four cards in his back row to finish.

Kawar drew Swen. In the Draw Phase, he played Flashing Fire targeting Magnifica. Yang Chained Magnifica’s effect to tag out, and Kawar Chained Freezing Curses – Yang flipped Solemn Judgment! Magnifica brought in Mikailis in its place. Kawar played Chant to add Mystical Space Typhoon to his hand, but Yang had Dragon’s Mind to negate that. Kawar played Runick Tip, adding Slumber to his hand. He finally left his Draw Phase, and activated Pot of Greed! He drew Krosea and Flashing Fire. He activated Slumber on Mikailis, then Special Summoned Krosea. Krosea’s effect put Mystical Space Typhoon and Radiant Typhoon Vision in his hand. He played Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy a Cosmic Cyclone. He Special Summoned Swen, adding a Chant to his hand. He played Chant, getting Eldam. He Special Summoned Eldam, which put a new Krosea in his hand. Yang then used Mikailis to banish Eldam. Kawar played Vision, drawing Freezing Curses and Pot of Greed, discarding Curses. He played Pot of Greed! He drew Lava Golem and Tip. He Set Tip and Flashing Fire.

Yang used Mikailis to add Carpedivem to his hand. He played it, then used Martha’s effect to Special Summon it and Elis. Kawar flipped Flashing Fire to destroy Martha, and Yang Chained Vadis to Special Summon one more each of Martha and Elis. He stacked both copies of Elis for a new Mikailis, which banished Krosea. Kawar responded with Tip to get Freezing Curses in hand. Yang then Set Dragon’s Mind. As he began making more plays into Gibrine, it was enough to end this Match!
