Round 1 Feature Match: David Stolhanske vs. Marc Routhier

David Stolhanske from Minneapolis, Minnesota is competing in his first-ever YCS this weekend. He’s using a Mitsurugi Yummy Deck, which is a popular Deck for the tournament. Now, he’s facing off against Marc Routhier from Quebec in this Round 1 Feature Match! Routhier is using a Solfachord Yummy Deck. Routhier says he chose to use Solfachord cards instead of Mitsurugi cards because he believes that his Solfachord variant of a Yummy Deck is less vulnerable to cards like Nibiru, the Primal Being and Droll & Lock Bird, and is more consistent at achieving its goal. Routhier believes he sacrificed power for consistency by choosing to use Solfachord cards instead of Mitsurugi cards, but will it pay off? We’re about to find out. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Stolhanske opened up Duel 1 with Mitsurugi Prayers, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Yummy☆Surprise, and 2 copies of Ame no Habakiri no Misurugi.

He activated Habakiri’s effect by revealing it from his hand. He Special Summoned Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji from his Deck and Tributed it. Next, he activated Saji’s effect to add Mitsurugi Ritual from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated another Mitsurugi Ritual to Tribute Habakiri from his field and Summon Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi from his Deck. He activated the effect of his Tributed Habakiri to try to Special Summon it and add a card from his Deck to his hand, but Routhier Chained Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion to negate the activation. Routhier Chained Mitsurugi Prayers by Tributing Futsu. He added Habakiri to his hand and Special Summoned Saji from his Graveyard by taking 800 points of damage. In a new Chain, Stolhanske used the effect of Futsu to add Mitsurugi Mirror from his Deck to his hand and Special Summon Futsu back from his Graveyard. Stolhanske Normal Summoned Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring next and then sent Saji and The Zombie Vampire to the Graveyard to Link Summon I:P Masquerena. He Set Great Purification and Yummy☆Surprise before ending his turn.

Routhier activated Solfachord Happiness to start his turn. Stolhanske Chained Masquerena’s effect to Link Summon S:P Little Knight by using Ash Blossom and Masquerena as Link Materials. Routhier resolved Happiness by discarding Cooky☆Yummy and adding DoSolfachord Cutia and Solfachord Primoa from his Deck to his before and Special Summoning them from both his hand. He activated the effects of Primoa and Cutia on the field, and Stolhanske Chained Little Knight’s effect to banish Primoa since it had just been Link Summoned using Masquerena as a Link Material. Routhier added Solfachord Solfegia and Solfachord Primoa to his hand with the effects of his two monsters. With no more cards left to stop Routhier’s plays, Stolhanske conceded the first Duel!

Stolhanske Chained Mitsurugi Prayers by Tributing Habakiri, allowing him to add Murakumo from his Deck to his hand and then Special Summon Saji by taking 800 points of damage. In a new Chain, he activated the effect of his Tributed Habakiri to add Mitsurugi Ritual from his Deck to his hand. He activated the Ritual to Summon Murakumo from his hand by Tributing Aramasa from his Deck and Kusanagi from his hand. He used Kusanagi’s effect to return Mitsurugi Ritual to his hand and Aramasa’s effect to add a card from his Deck to his hand. Routhier Chained the effect of Lollipo★Yummy Way to return it to the Extra Deck even though its effect was negated by Dark Ruler No More, and Stolhanske added Habakiri from his Deck to his hand with Aramasa’s effect. Next, he activated Mitsurugi Ritual to try to Special Summon from his Deck, and Stolhanske Chained Yummy☆Surprise! He returned Cupsy and Marshmao to his own hand, and returned Murakumo and Saji to Stolhanske’s hand! Duel Three

Routhier started off Duel 3 by Special Summoning Marshmao☆Yummy from his hand, prompting Stolhanske to activate the effect of Mulcharmy Fuwalos; but Routhier Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring’s effect to negate it! Next, Routhier Link Summoned Yummy★Snatchy and used its effect to place Yummyusment☆Mignon in his Field Spell Zone. He Special Summoned Cupsy☆Yummy from his hand next, and used its effect to add Yummy☆Surprise from his Deck to his hand. He sent Cupsy and Snatchy to the Graveyard to Synchro Summon Lollipo★Yummy Way and used its effect to Special Summon Yummy★Snatchy and Cupsy from his Graveyard. That prompted Stolhanske to activated the effect of Nibiru, the Primal Being in his hand, Tributing all monsters on the field to Summon the Nibiru and give Routhier a Primal Being Token. Routhier used the Token to Link Summon Link Spider and then used Yummyusment☆Mignon’s effect to Special Summon Cupsy from his Graveyard. He sent Cupsy and Spider to the Graveyard to Link Summon Little Knight and used Little Knight’s effect to banish Nibiru from Stolhanske’s field. Next, he used Yummy☆Surprise to Special Summon Lollipo★Yummy Way from his Graveyard and then Special Summoned Lollipo☆Yummy from his hand. He Set a card to his back row and then ended his turn.

Stolhanske had Dark Ruler No More and Nibiru, the Primal Being in his hand, then drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for his turn. With no cards central to his strategy, he ended his turn.

Routhier switched Lollipo★Yummy Way and Lollipo☆Yummy into Attack Position and then attacked directly with both monsters plus Little Knight, dropping Stolhanske down to 2600 Life Points. He passed his turn with no further play.

Stolhanske drew Droll & Lock Bird on his next turn and conceded. He hadn’t drawn any Mitsurugi or Yummy cards in the entire Duel, so there was nothing he could do to take down Routhier.

Marc Routhier advances with a 1-0 record using his Solfachord Yummy Deck!
