Round 1 Feature Match: Steven Trifunoski vs. Carlos Guillen
YCS Anaheim is kicking off with YCS Champion Steven Trifunoski, fresh off winning YCS Lima last week! This Toronto Duelist is using the same strategy that got him another title – a mix of Yummy and Mitsurugi, with a splash of Nouvelle! His opponent is Carlos Guillen, from Los Angeles, playing Crystron K9! Both of these strategies were affected by the latest Forbidden & Limited List, but also got new cards from Doom of Dimensions, making this an exciting time for everyone.
Duel 1
Trifunoski won the dice roll and played first, with a hand of Marshmao☆Yummy, Mitsurugi Mirror, Called by the Grave, Mitsurugi Prayers, and Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi.
He activated Habakiri’s effect. Guillen responded with Mulcharmy Fuwalos, but it was negated by Called by the Grave. Habakiri’s effect brought Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji to the field and Tributed it. Saji’s effect then put Mitsurugi Ritual in his hand. He Special Summoned Marshmao, then activated Mitsurugi Ritual to Ritual Summon from his Deck – Guillen had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Trifunoski Link Summoned Yummy★Snatchy, which put Yummyusment☆Mignon on the field. He used the Field Spell to Special Summon Marshmao, then Synchro Summoned Cupsy★Yummy Way. It put Cupsy☆Yummy and Cooky☆Yummy in his hand, and he discarded Cooky. He Special Summoned Cupsy from his hand, which put Yummy☆Surprise in his hand. He used Cupsy★Yummy Way to Link Summon a new Snatchy, then Synchro Summoned Lollipo★Yummy Way. Its effect brought Cupsy and Cupsy★Yummy Way to the field with their effects negated. He used both of those to Synchro Summon Shamisen Samsara Sorrowcat. Then he used Surprise to Special Summon Marshmao, returning the same Surprise to his hand. He used Marshmao and Sorrowcat to Synchro Summon Herald of the Arc Light.

He activated Mitsurugi Prayers next, adding Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi to his hand. He followed up with Mitsurugi Mirror, Tributing Habakiri to Ritual Summon Murakumo. Habakiri’s effect put a new Prayers in his hand. He Special Summoned Sorrowcat from his Graveyard by returning a Yummy Synchro, then used Sorrowcat and Murakumo to Link Summon I:P Masquerena. He Set Prayers and Surprise to finish the turn.
Guillen considered his options for a moment, and conceded the first Duel. He was already down some cards trying to interact on Trifunoski’s turn, and didn’t see a way through the rest of this opening. Guillen had an advantage heading into the next Duel: he hadn’t revealed any of his strategy yet, so Trifunoski would not be able to use his Side Deck to specifically counteract him.
Duel 2
Trifunoski began the next Duel with Surprise, Cupsy, Lollipo, and two Marshmao. A Yummy hand indeed.
Guillen began the second Duel with a face-down Spell or Trap Card.

Trifunoski drew Forbidden Chalice. He Special Summoned Marshmao, then Link Summoned Snatchy and didn’t use its effect. He Special Summoned Cupsy, which put Cooky in his hand. Guillen had a Droll & Lock Bird, then flipped Dimensional Barrier to block Synchro Summons for the turn! Trifunoski Special Summoned Lollipo, returning Dimensional Barrier to Guillen’s Deck. He used Cupsy to Link Summon another Snatchy, using its effect to put Yummyusment☆Mignon on the field. Mignon let him Special Summon Cupsy from the Graveyard. He moved to the Battle Phase, with all of his monsters gaining 2000 ATK from his Field Spell! Guillen was wide open, and Trifunoski sent his Yummy army to end the Match!
