Tech Update: Alliance Insight

The new Alliance Insight booster set was officially released on Friday, and it’s already having a big impact on this weekend’s tournament. The set contains lots of support for popular themes including “Maliss”, “Ryzeal”, and “Dragon Rulers”. It also introduces the new “Regenesis” theme to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME. In addition to all of that, it contains some tech cards that fit into a variety of different Decks. Take a look at some of the versatile tech cards that are available from Alliance Insight for Duelists to use this weekend!

(1.) Gordian Slicer

Gordian Slicer is a Normal Spell card that you can activate at the start of Main Phase 1 or Main Phase 2, and its activation and effect can’t be negated. It lets you target any number of face-up cards on the field, and then for each targeted card, you banish a card from your hand or 6 cards from your Extra Deck face-down to return those targeted cards to the hand.

After your opponent builds a powerful field of face-up cards, Gordian Slicer can cut through them. Powerful monsters that are commonly Special Summoned from the Extra Deck like Ryzeal Detonator, D/D/D Wave High King Caesar, and Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon are all vulnerable to Gordian Slicer. Plus, it can handle multiple cards at once. Decks that are not heavily reliant on Summoning monsters from the Extra Deck can even use Gordian Slicer’s effect without giving up cards in the hand, by getting rid of 6 cards from the Extra Deck for each card targeted instead. Since Gordian Slicer can target any face-up card, and not just monsters, it can even be used to remove pesky cards like Skill Drain from the field.

Gordian Slicer is a strong card that can have a big impact in a Duel. Many Duelists are still trying to figure out which Decks can best utilize it, and as YCS Providence continues, we’ll see if any Duelists here have figured out where it fits best.

(2.) Songs of the Dominators

Songs of the Dominators
is a new Normal Trap Card that you can activate when an opponent activates the effect of a monster on the field. Songs of the Dominators negates that effect, then lets you add a “Dominus” card from your Deck to your hand if you have a Trap Card in your Graveyard. Negating an opponent’s monster effect can slow down your opponent’s momentum, and adding a Dominus Impulse or Dominus Purge from your Deck to your hand lets you follow up with another powerful negation effect to disrupt your opponent’s plays.

Plus, you can activate Songs of the Dominators from your hand if you have no monsters in your Graveyard. That enables you to use it against your opponent on his or her first turn. If you do activate it from your hand, however, you can’t activate the effects of monsters in your hand, Graveyard, and banishment, until the end of the next turn. That’s a hefty drawback for most Decks, so Duelists are still trying to figure out which Decks can play around it.

(3.) Dragon’s Mind

Dragon’s Mind is a new Counter Trap Card that can negate the activation of any Spell, Trap, or monster effect while you control a monster with original ATK or DEF of 2500. It also destroys the card whose effect activation it negates. Dragon’s Mind easily works with the “Regenesis” monsters, since they all have 2500 ATK and DEF – but there are also several other popular monsters with 2500 ATK that allow a Duelist to activate Dragon’s Mind while they’re on the field.

Blue-Eyes White Dragon, for instance, has 2500 DEF and lets you use Dragon’s Mind while it’s on the field. Ryzeal Duo Drive has 2500 ATK, enabling you to activate Dragon’s Mind while you have one face-up. As both of these monsters are key to specific top competitive Decks, they’re often on the field and able to make the activation of Dragon’s Mind possible.

Dragon’s Mind also has another effect that makes it even stronger! If it’s in your Graveyard, you can pay 2500 Life Points to Set it back to the field, but banish it when it leaves the field. That lets you get a second use out of your Dragon’s Mind’s powerful effect to negate the activation of virtually anything.

While the in-theme cards from Alliance Insight seem to be having the biggest impact this weekend, some of the more general tech cards have powerful effects that could have a big impact in the Matches leading up to the Top Cut.
