NAWCQ Round 9 Feature Match: Joseph Bogli vs. Mahesh Subramanian

Joseph Bogli from Manchester, Connecticut and Mahesh Subramanian from Dayton, New Jersey are both currently 6-2 in the 2025 North America World Championship Qualifier. Now they’re Dueling against one another in today’s final Swiss Round. Bogli is using a Blue-Eyes Deck, and Subramanian is using a Bystial @Ignister Maliss Deck. All Duelists will need at least 19 points to advance to Day 2 of the event, which means these competitors will need a tie or a victory in this Round in order to advance to tomorrow’s portion of the tournament and have a chance at making it into the Top Cut. It’s time to Duel!

 

Duel One

Bogli opened up Duel 1 with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Primite Dragon Ether Beryl, Maiden of White, Sage with Eyes of Blue, and Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion.

 

 

He Normal Summoned Ether Beryl and activated its effect, but lost out to Infinite Impermanence. Next, he sent Ether Beryl to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spirit with Eyes of Blue and used its effect to add Mausoleum of White from his Deck to his hand. He activated it and then Normal Summoned Sage with Eyes of Blue thanks to the extra Normal Summon he was granted by the Mausoleum. He used Sage’s effect to add Effect Veiler from his Deck to his hand and then sent Maiden from his hand to his Graveyard to place True Light from his Deck into his Spell & Trap Card Zone face-up. Next, he used Mausoleum’s effect to send a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck to his Graveyard and increase Sage’s ATK. He Tributed Spirit to Special Summon Blue-Eyes from his Graveyard and then Tuned Blue-Eyes with Sage to Synchro Summon Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon. He used True Light’s effect to Set Roar of the Blue-Eyed Dragons from his Deck and then flipped it to Special Summon a Blue-Eyes from his Graveyard. He then used his Maiden’s effect to Special Summon the Maiden from his Graveyard. He sent Maiden to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spirit and then sent Spirit and Blue-Eyes to the Graveyard to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres. Bogli attempted to end his Main Phase 1, but Subramanian activated the effect of Maliss <P> March Hare in his hand to Special Summon it by banishing a Maliss <P> Dormouse from his hand. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon the Dormouse from banishment.

 

Subramanian drew a card and then activated his Dormouse’s effect in his Main Phase. Bogli negated its effect with Effect Veiler. Next, Bogli used his Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon’s effect to Tribute it and Special Summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon from his Extra Deck in Defense Position. Subramanian sent Dormouse to the Graveyard to Link Summon Linguriboh and then activated the effect of Backup @Ignister in his hand to Special Summon it. He used its effect to add Wizard @Ignister from his Deck to his hand and discard Maliss <P> Chessy Cat. Next, Subramanian sent Linguriboh and Backup @Ignister to the Graveyard to Link Summon S:P Little Knight and used its effect to target True Light for banishment. Bogli Chained his True Light’s effect to Special Summon a monster. Subramanian Chained Little Knight’s effect to try to banish Ultimate Spirit Dragon and Little Knight, and Bogli Chained his Seals’s effect to return Little Knight to the Extra Deck, preventing it from banishing the Ultimate Spirit Dragon. Bogli Special Summoned a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard with True Light’s effect before True Light was banished, and then in a new Chain, he Special Summoned Maiden from his Graveyard and Bystial Magnamhut from his Deck. In another Chain, he activated Magnamhut’s effect so that he could add a Dragon from his Deck to his hand in the End Phase. Subramanian continued his Main Phase by sending March Hare to the Graveyard and Summoning Link Disciple. Next, he activated the effect of Wizard @Ignister, but it was negated by Bogli’s Ghost Belle. Subramanian used Link Disciple as an Xyz Material to Summon Super Starslayer TY-PHON – Sky Crisis and detached an Xyz Material from it to return Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Bogli’s hand. He attacked Maiden with TY-PHON and Bogli Special Summoned Sage from his Graveyard with Maiden’s effect before the Maiden was destroyed in battle. Subramanian activated Maliss in Underground in Main Phase 2 and banished March Hare from his Deck with its effect. He paid 300 Life Points to return March Hare to his hand and then ended his turn. In the End Phase, Bogli returned a Spirit with Eyes of Blue from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck with Magnamhut’s effect and the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon was destroyed due to the Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon’s effect.

 

Bogli drew Primite Dragon Ether Beryl and Normal Summoned it. He Set Primite Lordly Lode from his Deck and flipped it to add Primite Drillbeam from his Deck to his hand. He activated Drillbeam by revealing Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his hand and banished the TY-PHON. He then Set the Drillbeam back to his field with its effect. He sent Sage from his field to his Graveyard to Link Summon Spirit and then Tributed it to Special Summon Blue-Eyes from his hand. He Special Summoned Maiden from his Graveyard and then banished Roar from his Graveyard to fuse Magnamhut with Blue-Eyes and Summon Blue-Eyes Tyrant Dragon. He activated the effect of Mausoleum by targeting Maiden and sent Blue-Eyes from his Deck to his Graveyard. Subramanian conceded, unable to withstand the attacks from Bogli’s monsters.

Duel Two

Subramanian started off Duel 2 by activating Terraforming to add Maliss in Underworld from his Deck to his hand.

 

 

He activated it to banish Dormouse from his Deck and paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon Dormouse. Bogli activated the effect of Mulcharmy Fuwalos, but lost out to Ash Blossom. Next, Subramanian activated Dormouse’s effect to banish Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his Deck and paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon it. He used White Rabbit’s effect to Set Maliss <C> GWC-06 from his Deck. He sent Dormouse and White Rabbit from his field to his Graveyard to Link Summon Splash Mage, prompting Bogli to Special Summon Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay from his Deck. He drew an Artifact Lancea and another Phantazmay and returned a True Light from his hand to his Deck. Subramanian used his Splash Mage’s effect to Special Summon Dormouse from his Graveyard. He then sent Dormouse and Splash Mage to the Graveyard to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Red Ransom and used its effect to add Maliss in the Mirror from his Deck to his hand. He flipped GWC-06 by banishing Red Ransom and Special Summoned White Rabbit from his Graveyard. He paid 900 Life Points to activate Red Ransom’s effect in banishment, and Bogli Chained Artifact Lancea’s effect from his hand! Subramanian Special Summoned Red Ransom and then sent White Rabbit and Red Ransom to the Graveyard to Link Summon Topologic Bomber Dragon. He Set 3 cards to his back row and then ended his turn.

 

Bogli drew Primite Drillbeam and added it to his hand of Sage with Eyes of Blue, Maiden of White, and Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay. He Normal Summoned Sage and activated its effect. Subramanian Chained Mistaken Arrest followed by Maliss <C> MTP-07. Subramanian added Maliss <P> March Hare from his Deck to his hand, and the Sage’s effect was stopped by the Mistaken Arrest. Next, Subramanian Special Summoned March Hare from his hand by banishing Red Ransom from his Graveyard. He Special Summoned it linked to Bomber Dragon and Bomber Dragon’s effect activated to destroy all monsters in the Main Monster Zone. He Chained Red Ransom’s effect and paid 900 Life Points to Special Summon the Red Ransom and banish March Hare before all monsters in the Main Monster Zones, including the Red Ransom, were destroyed. Subramanian paid 300 Life Points to add March Hare from banishment to his hand. Next, Bogli activated the effect of the Maiden in his hand to place True Light from his Deck into his Spell & Trap Card Zone. He used its effect to Set Roar from his Deck and then flipped it face-up, but lost out to Ash Blossom. Bogli Set a card to his back row and then ended his turn.

 

Subramanian activated March Hare’s effect by banishing Red Ransom from his Graveyard and paid 900 Life Points to Special Summon Red Ransom back to the field and banish another March Hare from his Deck. He paid 300 Life Points to return March Hare from banishment to his hand, and Bogli Chained the effect of Phantazmay in his hand, linked to Bomber Dragon. Bogli drew Ash Blossom, Blue-Eyes, and Magnamhut, and returned Ash Blossom and Magnamhut to his Deck. Bomber Dragon’s effect destroyed all monsters in the Main Monster Zone once again. Subramanian entered his Battle Phase and attacked Bogli directly with Bomber Dragon, dropping Bogli down to 5000 Life Points. In Subramanian’s End Phase, Bogli Set Wishes for Eyes of Blue from his Deck with the effect of True Light.

 

Bogli drew another Phantazmay next turn and then activated his face-down Wishes by discarding Phantazmay. He added Sage and Majesty of the White Dragons from his Deck to his hand and then Normal Summoned Sage. He activated Sage’s effect to add Effect Veiler from his Deck to his hand. Subramanian activated his March Hare’s effect by banishing a March Hare from his Graveyard and Special Summoned it linked to Bomber Dragon. Bomber Dragon’s effect cleared the Main Monster Zones and Subramanian paid 300 Life Points to return his banished March Hare to his hand. Bogli used True Light’s effect to Special Summon Blue-Eyes from his hand and then activated his Maiden’s effect in the Graveyard to try to Special Summon it; but Subramanian Chained the effect of a Bystial Druiswurm to banish the Maiden and Special Summon Druiswurm linked to Bomber Dragon. Bomber Dragon’s effect activated to clear the Main Monster Zones once again.

 

Subramanian drew a card and then Normal Summoned Maliss <P> Chessy Cat. Bogli activated True Light’s effect to Special Summon Blue-Eyes to his field. Next, Subramanian activated Chessy Cat’s effect, but lost out to Bogli’s Effect Veiler. Subramanian sent Chessy Cat to the Graveyard to Link Summon Link Disciple linked to the Bomber Dragon, and its effect activated to try to destroy all monsters in the Main Monster Zone once again; but Bogli flipped Primite Drillbeam to negate the Bomber Dragon’s effect and banish the Topologic Bomber Dragon. Subramanian activated the effect of the March Hare in his hand and Special Summoned it by banishing Red Ransom from his Graveyard. He paid 900 Life Points to Special Summon the Red Ransom and used Red Ransom’s effect to banish Dormouse from his Deck. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon the Dormouse and then sent March Hare to the Graveyard to Link Summon Linguriboh. He activated Dormouse’s effect next to banish Chessy Cat from his Deck and paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon the Chessy Cat. He sent Link Disciple and Chessy Cat to the Graveyard along with Dormouse to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Hearts Crypter and then sent Hearts Crypter and Red Ransom to the Graveyard to Link Summon Accesscode Talker. He activated Accesscode’s effect to increase its ATK by 3000 and then banished Hearts Crypter from his Graveyard to use Accesscode Talker’s effect to destroy a card. Bogli finally conceded, knowing he would be defeated that turn.

 

 

Bogli and Subramanian began Side Decking for the third Duel, but with only a minute left in the round when the Duelists finished the second Duel, time expired while the Duelists were adjusting their Decks!

 

The Match ended in a Draw! Both Duelists will advance to Day 2 with a 6-2-1 record!
