What If I Create the Next Great Deck?
Genesys is the people’s format – YOU, the Duelists, will be driving most of the action behind the point costs of cards. We’re planning to update the point costs regularly. In general, cards that don’t see as much play will see their costs go down, and cards that get played a lot could see their costs go up.
Picture this: You’ve just won the very first Genesys YCS with your own unique strategy that you spent a month designing and testing. It should be one of the greatest moments of your Dueling career, but there’s a nagging voice in the back of your head saying “Is my Deck about to be costed out of existence?”
The short answer is no: a singular breakout performance for a new strategy isn’t going to immediately lead to all its key cards winding up with points assigned to them. If the Deck gains traction amongst Duelists and more and more players pick it up, and it’s stuffing the top tables at the next few big events, that’s something for us to look at. Certain cards will probably start getting point costs. But that’s because everybody’s playing them, not because you played them.
If it doesn’t gain traction and it turns out you’re just a genius and the only person who can comprehend the Deck you built and you win again and again with it, then that would be what’s colloquially referred to as a “Skill Issue” on the part of the rest of the competitors. There’s no community benefit to stifling individual brilliance. The onus here is on the rest of the world to catch up.
A major exception to this principle is if the Deck you’ve come up with is an FTK Deck or includes an FTK combo. If the Deck you’ve come up with contains an FTK combo, that specific combo will be swiftly costed out of the standard 100-point environment, but still available in higher power-level environments like 200 points or 500 points that will allow players to include a higher concentration of counter cards (or other extreme power-level strategies) to fight against it.
So it’s to your advantage to come up with something new and never before seen that’s challenging for the average Duelist to pick up and duplicate your success with. Easier said than done of course, but we can’t wait to see what kinds of fascinating new Decks you can cook up!
