Theme Spotlight: Blue-Eyes Genesys
Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Genesys removes Link and Pendulum Monsters from the usable card pool. The modern “Blue-Eyes” Deck strategy relies on two Link Monsters: Spirit with Eyes of Blue and Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres.
Is this a problem for the Deck? Not really! Let’s talk about why.
I would suggest approaching Genesys with a “how can I adapt?” mentality when you start considering the points your cards cost and how you won’t be able to rely on some of those powerful Extra Deck options. You might even discover some cool tech cards you have not considered before!
Where to Start?
Anytime I am building a Deck for Genesys, the first thing I like to do is take a look at what cards in the main portion of my Deck are going to be carrying a point value. The only card we really have to be worried about is Wishes for Eyes of Blue at a whopping 33-point cost. This means we can really only get away with playing 1 copy of this, that is if we want to include other cards like Effect Veiler (currently 7 points). The good thing is that Wishes is easily searched with cards like True Light and Maiden of White that don’t have a point cost, so having only 1 copy of Wishes won’t be a deal breaker. Everything else included in your usual “Blue-Eyes” Deck is fair game because they cost zero points!
For Genesys, my game plan with the “Blue-Eyes” Deck is focusing on setting up a couple of big Synchro Monsters consistently and backing them up with solid Trap Cards. Kaibaman the Legend can get you to the Level 9 Synchro Monster you need very easily, just make sure to have 3 copies of Blue-Eyes White Dragon in your Deck! Kaibaman the Legend alsohas a Graveyard effect that lets you add any “Blue-Eyes” monster from your Deck to your hand, and with Genesys being a slower placed game, Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon could be back on the menu!
Multiple copies of Majesty of the White Dragons might also be a good way to get your “Blue-Eyes” monsters out of your Deck, since it’s another free card and we won’t be maxing out on Wishes for Eyes of Blue. Destined Rivals could be another great target we might be able to add off Bingo Machine, Go!!!. “Blue-Eyes” is one theme for sure that has a ton of options for Genesys Deck construction, it is up to you to find the cards that best fit your play style!
Where should the rest of my points go?
One of my favorite value picks in Genesys right now has to be Dominus Purge. With only a 10-point cost (keep in mind that this could change!) it is an auto-include into my “Blue-Eyes” Deck. I also gravitate towards the 5-point Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon. It offers mass interaction and it is pretty neat that you can activate Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon’s effect, chain the Cannon, deal with the monsters, and have your Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon come out unharmed. And don’t forget that Sage with Eyes of Blue can add Effect Veiler, so you are going to want to budget for 7 to 21 points for Veilers, depending on how many you want to play.
Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Genesys is the peoples’ format. What you play and how you play it will shape the game as it evolves. There are so many themes and strategies to choose from, it truly is the format that is always growing. It is up to you to find the Deck you enjoy the most and how you navigate the point system to create your very own Genesys Deck. I have had a ton of fun building different strategies like the “Blue-Eyes” theme we have talked about today, but the world is your oyster, go out and find what works best for you!
