Round 6 Feature Match: Aldo Garcia versus Cedric Hunter

September 26th, 2009

It’s Round 6, and each of participants in this feature match have 4-1 records so far. Aldo Garcia is 4-1 here today with Dragons, packing “Red-Eyes Wyvern” and “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon” alongside “Light and Darkness Dragon,” “Totem Dragon,” “Prime Material Dragon,” and “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” plus the new “White Night Dragon” card from Ancient Prophecy.

His opponent Cedric Hunter is running Blackwings with “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.” He’s using multiple copies of “Burial From a Different Dimension,” backed by “Armageddon Knight” and “Dark Grepher.” Since Hunter’s Deck centers around Special Summoning DARK monsters, “Koa’ki Meiru Drago” could be a deciding card in this matchup.

Hunter opened the match with a Set monster and a Set card in his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Garcia had “Light and Darkness Dragon”, “Smashing Ground,” “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon,” “Foolish Burial,” “Necro Gardna,” and “Exploder Dragon.” He Normal Summoned “Exploder Dragon,” attacked Hunter’s face-down monster, and destroyed “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.” In Main Phase 2 he sent “Totem Dragon” to his Graveyard with Foolish Burial, setting up to Tribute Summon of “Light and Darkness Dragon” next turn!

Play was back to Hunter. He took a moment to read “Totem Dragon’s” effect, then Special Summoned “Cyber Dragon.” He attacked “Exploder Dragon,” both monsters were destroyed, and Hunter Set another monster.

Garcia drew “Red-Eyes Wyvern”! He Special Summoned “Totem Dragon” from his Graveyard, Tributed it, and Summoned “Light and Darkness Dragon”! Hunter had no response, and when “Light and Darkness Dragon” attacked it destroyed Hunter’s “Necro Gardna.” Garcia was playing in a very calculated, controlled manner.

Hunter was stuck on the defensive. He Set a monster, Set a card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone, and ended. Garcia Summoned “Red-Eyes Wyvern,” Hunter flipped “Trap Dustshoot,” but “Light and Darkness Dragon” negated it. Wyvern attacked, destroying Hunter’s “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” and “Light and Darkness Dragon” attacked directly. Hunter removed “Necro Gardna” to try and stop the attack, but “Light and Darkness Dragon” negated Gardna’s effect and hit for 1800 damage.

Hunter Normal Summoned “Dark Grepher,” then discarded “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.” The Dragon negated Grepher’s effect, but Hunter was able to get that Vayu in the Graveyard. He activated its effect once to reduce “Light and Darkness Dragon” to 800 ATK, then activated it again to Special Summon “Blackwing Armed Wing” using Vayu and Sirocco. Armed Wing attacked over “Red-Eyes Wyvern,” and “Dark Grepher” attacked “Light and Darkness Dragon”, but when “Light and Darkness Dragon” hit the Graveyard, Garcia got to Special Summon “Exploder Dragon.”

Garcia activated “Future Fusion” next turn, sending “Totem Dragon,” “Prime Material Dragon,” “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” “Red-Eyes Wyvern,” and “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon” (REDMD) to the Graveyard. In two turns he would Summon “Five-Headed Dragon.” But he had more immediate plans than that.

Garcia next removed “Exploder Dragon” from the field to Special Summon REDMD from his hand. REDMD’s effect then let him Special Summon “Prime Material Dragon” from his Graveyard! Garcia entered his Battle Phase, and Hunter activated “Burial from a Different Dimension,” to return Vayu, Sirocco, and “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard. He removed “Necro Gardna” to stop Red Eyes’ attack, leaving “Prime Material Dragon” to run over “Dark Grepher.” In the End Phase, Garcia removed “Red-Eyes Wyvern” to Special Summon another REDMD!

Hunter Normal Summoned “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” activating her effect to destroy “Future Fusion” and stop the Summon of “Five-Headed Dragon” from happening. He then turned “Blackwing Armed Wing” to Defense Position, and sent “Monster Reincarnation” and two “Allure of Darkness” to his Graveyard for Lyla’s effect. He ended his turn with one card in hand.

Garcia used both of his REDMD’s effects to Special Summon two Dragons next turn: “Koa’ki Meiru Drago” and “Red-Eyes Wyvern.” Wyvern attacked Lyla, Drago attacked “Blackwing Armed Wing,” and the first REDMD made a direct attack. “Prime Material Dragon” and the second REDMD followed suit, and the first Duel was over.

Aldo Garcia takes a commanding first Duel with Dragons, leading off with “Light and Darkness Dragon” and then overwhelming a weakened Cedric Hunter with a flood of huge Dragon-Type monsters! Using his Side Deck, Garcia took out “Smashing Ground” and “Lightning Vortex,” replacing them with two copies of “Malevolent Catastrophe.”

Hunter opened Duel 2 by Summoning “Armageddon Knight,” sending “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard. Not choosing “Necro Gardna” seemed to indicate he also had a defensive card like “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and sure enough, Hunter Set a card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone.

Garcia had REDMD, “Light and Darkness Dragon”, 2 copies of “Book of Moon,” “Phoenix Wing Wind Blast,” and “Malevolent Catastrophe”. He Set Malevolent, Set “Phoenix Wing Wind Blast,” and ended.

Hunter Summoned “Card Trooper,” passing priority. Garcia responded with “Phoenix Wing Wind Blast,” discarding “Light and Darkness Dragon” to spin “Card Trooper” back to Hunter’s Deck. Hunter attacked with “Armageddon Knight,” then Set another card to his back row.

Garcia drew and activated “Gold Sarcophagus,” searching his Deck for “Future Fusion” and removing it from the game. As he ended his turn, Garcia was cool as a cucumber, leaning back in his seat.

Hunter drew and Summoned “Card Trooper,” activating its effect to send “Dust Tornado” and two copies of “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” to his Graveyard! “Armageddon Knight” attacked, and Garcia flipped “Malevolent Catastrophe”! Hunter lost his “Torrential Tribute” and “Royal Oppression,” but pressed on, attacking with “Card Trooper” next. Garcia was down to 3300 Life Points. Hunter Set a Trap Card.

Garcia drew, and was left holding two “Books of Moon” and two REDMD. He Set both Books, just needing to get to that “Future Fusion” next turn. But Hunter activated “Heavy Storm” on his turn, destroying both Books! He activated “Card Trooper’s” effect, sending “Mirror Force,” “Royal Oppression,” and “Dark Grepher” to his Graveyard. He Tributed “Armageddon Knight” for “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” attacked with both of his monsters, and that was game!

Cedric Hunter smells a weak hand and dives on Aldo Garcia, giving him no quarter and taking the win in Duel 2!

Garcia opened the last Duel with “Foolish Burial,” “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” “Book of Moon,” “Future Fusion,” “Masked Dragon,” and “Heavy Storm.” With both “Future Fusion” and “Heavy Storm,” this seemed like an amazing hand. Garcia Summoned “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” set Book, and ended – without activating “Future Fusion.” What was he doing? He revealed “Masked Dragon” to keep Drago on the field and ended.

Hunter Set a monster, then Set two cards to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Garcia drew another “Foolish Burial,” attacked with Drago, and destroyed Hunter’s face-down “Necro Gardna.” He ended his turn – still no “Future Fusion.”

Hunter Set another monster, then Set another back row card! Garcia blasted him with “Heavy Storm” during his turn, and although Hunter Chained “Threatening Roar,” he lost “Torrential Tribute” and “Royal Oppression.” Garcia Summoned “Masked Dragon,” tried to attack, but was reminded about the effect of “Threatening Roar.” He activated “Future Fusion” in Main Phase 2, sending two copies of REDMD, a “Totem Dragon,” “Red-Eyes Wyvern,” and “White Night Dragon” to the Graveyard for “Five-Headed Dragon.”

He activated “Foolish Burial” next, sending “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard. He ended, and revealed “Prime Material Dragon” to keep “Koa’ki Meiru Drago” around. He had two cards left in hand (“Foolish Burial” and “Prime Material Dragon”), “Masked Dragon,” “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” and “Future Fusion” on the field.

Hunter drew to four cards in hand with one monster Set. He Flip Summoned that Set monster, “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor,” and took control of “Masked Dragon” with “Brain Control.” He Tributed “Masked Dragon” for “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” attacked Drago with Sirocco, and was repelled by “Necro Gardna”! Hunter ended his turn with a Set card in his Spell & Trap Card Zone.

Garcia drew “Giant Trunade.” He attacked Vayu with “Koa’ki Meiru Drago,” dropping Hunter to 6900 Life Points. He then Tributed Drago in Main Phase 2 for “Prime Material Dragon,” and used his second “Foolish Burial” to send another “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard. He ended.

Hunter turned Sirocco to Defense Position and Set another Spell or Trap.

Garcia Special Summoned “Five-Headed Dragon” next turn with “Future Fusion.” Hunter flipped “Bottomless Trap Hole” in response, but Garcia discarded “Red-Eyes Wyvern” to negate it, using the effect of “Prime Material Dragon.” “Prime Material Dragon” attacked into Sirocco, then “Five-Headed Dragon attacked but was negated by “Necro Gardna.” In the End Phase, Garcia removed two Wyverns to Special Summon two copies of “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon”!

Hunter Normal Summoned “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” next, activating her effect to detroy “Future Fusion” and send “Five-Headed Dragon” to the Graveyard. Hunter removed Vayu and Sirocco from his Graveyard, Special Summoned “Blackwing Armed Wing,” and sent three cards (including another Vayu) to his Graveyard to finish out.

Garcia moved to his next turn and activated “Giant Trunade”! Hunter Chained “Burial From a Different Dimension,” placing Vayu, “Necro Gardna,” and Sirocco back in his Graveyard. That left Garcia free to use his “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragons” to Special Summon “White Night Dragon” and “Koa’ki Meiru Drago.”

“Koa’ki Meiru Drago” destroyed Lyla, and “Prime Material Dragon” was sent after “Blackwing Armed Wing,” but that attack was stopped by “Necro Gardna.” Hunter had 6400 Life Points remaining. One REDMD attacked over Armed Wing. The second REDMD made a direct attack, and “White Night Dragon” attacked last to reduce Hunter to 100 Life Points! Drago was destroyed by its own effect in the End Phase.

Hunter Normal Summoned “Armageddon Knight,” sending “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard. He had one card remaining in-hand, and he sent it back to the top of his Deck to Special Summon “Plaguespreader Zombie.” He removed Vayu and Sirocco from his Graveyard next, Special Summoning “Blackwing Armed Wing”! He then Tuned it to “Plaguespreader Zombie” and Synchro Summoned “Colossal Fighter”!

Another Vayu and an Armed Wing got Hunter “Blackwing Armor Master.” “Colossal Fighter” attacked, and Garcia negated the attack with “Necro Gardna.” It took Hunter a moment to realize that this was purely academic at this point – by leaving “Armageddon Knight” on the field he’d leave himself open to the 100 Battle Damage Garcia would need to clinch the match. There was nothing Hunter could do, and he bashfully offered the handshake.

Aldo Garcia moves on, 5-1 with Dragons!
