Feature Match, Round 6: Andrew Fredella vs. Joe Spanier

October 17th, 2009

Joe Spanier is undefeated here in Round 6 with the DARK Zombie Deck we profiled earlier today. His opponent is former SHONEN JUMP Championship winner Andrew Fredella, who’s packing a Blackwing Deck that includes “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.” Both of these Decks are really well built, so it should be good to see them go head-to-head.

Fredella opened the Match by Setting a single Spell / Trap. Spanier had “Mystic Tomato,” “Caius the Shadow Monarch,” “Armageddon Knight,” “Heavy Storm,” and 2 “Foolish Burials.” He Summoned Tomato, and attacked for 1400 damage. Fredella fired back, activating “Black Whirlwind” next turn and Normal Summoning “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn.” He searched his Deck for “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame” with Whirlwind’s effect, then ended without attacking.

Spanier drew “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” and activated “Heavy Storm” to destroy Fredella’s “Book of Moon” and “Black Whirlwind”! Spanier Summoned “Armageddon Knight,” used its effect to send “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard, and passed his turn. Fredella summoned Shura, attacked with it, and Spanier negated the attack with “Necro Gardna.” Sirocco attacked “Armageddon Knight,” and Fredella Set three cards to his Spell & Trap Card Zone.

“Mystic Tomato” was Tributed for “Caius the Shadow Monarch,” and Spanier targeted Shura for removal. “That’s fine,” replied Fredella, removing Shura from play. Caius attacked Sirocco and Fredella activated “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow” from his hand, destroying Caius. Spanier ended his turn with nothing on the field.

Fredella Normal Summoned “Dark Grepher,” discarded “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” for Grepher’s effect, and sent “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn” to his Graveyard. He removed Vayu and Sirocco, Special Summoned “Blackwing Armed Wing,” and attacked with “Dark Grepher.” Spanier took the damage and Special Summoned “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” along with a 1700 ATK “Emissary of Darkness Token” which he promptly lost to “Blackwing Armed Wing’s” attack.

Next turn, Spanier activated “Lightning Vortex,” discarded “Mezuki,” and Fredella Chained “My Body As A Shield” to negate Vortex. Gorz attacked Sirocco and Fredella flipped “Mirror Force,” destroying it.

In Main Phase 2, Spanier activated “Foolish Burial,” sending “Goblin Zombie” to his Graveyard. He removed “Mezuki” to Special Summon “Goblin Zombie,” Set his second “Foolish Burial,” and lost it to “Mystical Space Typhoon” in the End Phase.

Fredella attacked “Goblin Zombie” with “Dark Grepher,” attacked with Armed Wing and Sirocco, and Spanier had just 400 Life Points remaining. He conceded the Duel after seeing his next draw.

Andrew Fredella hits hard and fast, smashing through Joe Spanier’s early defensive plays and taking control of the field! Both Duelists were playing extremely quickly, and Side Decking was done in a flash. Duel 2 began in moments.

Spanier had “Allure of Darkness,” “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” “Necro Gardna,” “Instant Fusion,” “Caius the Shadow Monarch,” and “Armageddon Knight.” He activated Allure, drawing “Morphing Jar” and “Mezuki.” He removed “Necro Gardna,” Summoned “Armageddon Knight,” and sent another “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard, then ended his turn.

Fredella had “Black Whirlwind” again, and he activated it, Normal Summoning “Blackwing – Bora the Spear.” That got him “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind,” and he attacked “Armageddon Knight” – Spanier removed “Necro Gardna” to keep “Armageddon Knight” around, leaving Fredella to end his turn.

Spanier drew “Reinforcement of the Army.” He Tributed “Armageddon Knight” to Summon “Caius the Shadow Monarch,” removed Bora from the field, and attacked for 2400 damage. Fredella was down to 4600 Life Points. A Set card to the back row ended Spanier’s turn.

Fredella Summoned “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame,” got another Bora with Whirlwind, and attacked Caius. During damage calculation, he activated the effect of “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow,” destroying Caius. That let Blackwing – Shura Special Summon “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” from the Deck and Vayu attacked for 800 damage.

In Main Phase 2, Fredella Tuned Vayu to Shura, Synchro Summoned “Magical Android,” and Set a card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. He ended, and went to 5200 Life Points with “Magical Android’s” effect.

Spanier activated “Reinforcement of the Army,” searched out another “Armageddon Knight,” and Summoned it to send “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard. He returned “Morphing Jar” to the top of his Deck, Special Summoned “Plaguespreader Zombie,” and then flipped “Instant Fusion” to Special Summon “Musician King” from his Extra Deck! Fredella responded with “Torrential Tribute,” clearing the field. A valiant effort from Spanier, but Fredella had shut him down.

A Set Spell or Trap finished the turn, and play was to Fredella. He Summoned Bora, searched out Kalut with Whirlwind, attacked for 1700 damage, and ended by Setting another Spell or Trap.

“Burial From a Different Dimension” let Spanier return his “Necro Gardnas” and “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard next turn, and he Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn” to attack over Bora. Fredella didn’t activate Kalut’s effect, choosing to Summon it next turn and search out “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North.” He activated “Brain Control,” took Sirocco, and Special Summoned “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind.” Gale’s attack went through, but Sirocco and Kalut were both blocked by “Necro Gardna.” Both Duelists stood at 2400 Life Points, and in Main Phase 2 Fredella Synchro Summoned “Stardust Dragon.”

Spanier brought back his “Plaguespreader Zombie” again to Tribute Summon “Caius the Shadow Monarch,” removing “Stardust Dragon” from the field, but when he attacked Kalut, Fredella flipped “Mirror Force” once again! Next turn it was all over when Fredella Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North” for a Synchro Summon and game.

Andrew Fredella takes a speedy pair of Duels to continue on undefeated in this tournament! Just 2 more wins in his next 3 Matches would place Fredella in Day 2.
