Feature Match, Side Event Final: Adam Corn vs. Davin Davara

October 18th, 2009

Twelve year-old Davin Davara is having a pretty awesome weekend. Yesterday we interviewed him in the SHONEN JUMP Championship First-Timer article, where he shared his thoughts about his first-ever trip to a SHONEN JUMP Championship. He then went on to win the Dragon Duel tournament later that day, and just this afternoon he was one of four lucky Duelists selected by raffle to compete for a copy of “Dark End Dragon.” Davara defeated his first opponent in the “Dark End Dragon” playoffs, winning two Duels straight to move on to the finals.

His opponent? Former U.S. National Champion and SHONEN JUMP Championship winner Adam Corn. With Dueling prodigy Davara playing an aggressive Blackwing Deck, and Corn possibly packing his Lightsworn Vayu Deck, this was one Match we just had to feature.

Davara opened the Match with a Set “Icarus Attack,” then Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Bora the Spear.” Corn activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast,” “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” and “Gold Sarcophagus” to the Graveyard to get “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner” from his Deck. He Special Summoned Wulf, Normal Summoned “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” and activated her effect. Davara Chained “Icarus Attack,” destroying both monsters, and Corn Set a card to his back row.

Davara passed with an empty field, holding “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness.” Corn Summoned Lumina, discarded Celestia, and Special Summoned Wulf. Lumina attacked, Wulf attacked, and Davara Special Summoned Gorz along with its 2100 ATK “Emissary of Darkness Token.” Lumina sent 2 “Honests” and 1 “Phantom of Chaos” to the Graveyard.

Davara Set a Spell or Trap, Summoned “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind,” halved Wulf’s ATK and DEF, and attacked Wulf with the “Emissary of Darkness Token.” Gorz attacked Lumina, Gale made a direct attack, and Corn was down to 3950 Life Points.

Another Charge sent “Plaguespreader Zombie,” Charge, and “Judgment Dragon” to the Graveyard for Corn, who searched out “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior.” He discarded it for “Solar Recharge,” drawing 2 cards and sending another Recharge and “Heavy Storm” to the Graveyard. He Set a monster, then activated “Gold Sarcophagus” to remove “Judgment Dragon.” Another Set back row card finished the turn.

Davara drew for his turn, then flipped “Reckless Greed.” He activated “Giant Trunade,” followed up with “Against the Wind,” and took back his “Blackwing – Bora the Spear” from his Graveyard! Corn conceded! “Wow,” said Corn, taking off his jacket and appearing a bit surprised.

Twelve year-old Davin Davara takes the first Duel against former SHONEN JUMP Championship winner and U.S. National Champion Adam Corn! Cards were changed, Decks were shuffled, and we were off to a second Duel!

DarkEndPlayoff-Davara

Corn opened up Duel 2 with “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” “Malevolent Catastrophe,” and “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin”to the Graveyard to get Garoth. He Summoned Lumina, Special Summoned Garoth with her effect, and sent 5 cards to the Graveyard. No draws with Garoth.

Davara Set a monster, then activated “Dimensional Fissure.” He lost it to “Mystical Space Typhoon” next turn. Corn discarded and Special Summoned Lyla, then Tributed her to Tribute Summon “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel.” Celestia’s effect destroyed Davara’s Kalut, and Davara took three direct hits. Corn Special Summoned a “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” and sent “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard in his End Phase.

Davara drew “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind,” but was looking at a hand of nothing but Spells: “Allure of Darkness,” “Brain Control,” “Lightning Vortex,” and “Giant Trunade.” He’d been fortunate to draw the Gale, but was still in a bit of a bind. He activated “Brain Control,” took Celestia, Summoned Gale, and activated “Lightning Vortex.” He made two direct attacks, then Tuned Gale to Celestia to Synchro Summon “Colossal Fighter.” The duel stood at 3050 to 3400 with Corn in the lead.

Corn Set a monster, then Set a card to his back row. Davara activated “Giant Trunade,” then sent “Colossal Fighter” to attack and destroy Corn’s “Plaguespreader Zombie.” Davara Set his last card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Corn passed, “Colossal Fighter” attacked for 3100 damage, and Corn Special Summoned Gorz with just 300 Life Points left.

He activated “Heavy Storm” next turn, Davara Chained “Reckless Greed,” and discarded his last card for “Lightning Vortex.” “Gorz and the “Emissary of Darkness Token” swung for game!

DarkEndPlayoff-Corn

Adam Corn levels the playing field against Davin Davara, moving us to a 1-all Match score! The next Duel would determine who would go home with a copy of “Dark End Dragon.”

“I’ll start,” announced Davara. He had “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow,” “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North,” “Reckless Greed,” “Lightning Vortex,” “Light-Imprisoning Mirror,” and “Icarus Attack.” He Set Kalut, then Set “Icarus Attack,” Reckless, and “Light-Imprisoning Mirror.”

Corn activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” “Lightning Vortex,” and “Malevolent Catastropohe” to his Graveyard to search his Deck for “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner.” He Summoned Lumina, discarded “Necro Gardna,” and Davara Chained “Light-Imprisoning Mirror” to negate Lumina’s effect! He Set a Spell or Trap Card and ended. Things were looking good for Davara.

Davara drew “Monster Reincarnation.” He flipped “Reckless Greed,” drawing “Brain Control” and “Black Whirlwind.” He activated “Brain Control” to take Lumina, then activated “Black Whirlwind.” He Normal Summoned Blizzard, and searched his Deck for “Blackwing – Fane the Steel Chain.” He Flip Summoned Kalut, then Tuned Blizzard to Lumina to Synchro Summon “Sea Dragon Lord Gishilnodon.” Corn destroyed it with “Bottomless Trap Hole” though, and Davara could do nothing but attack with Kalut for 1400 damage.

Corn summoned “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin,” and lost her to “Icarus Attack.” Davara discarded Fane for “Monster Reincarnation” next turn, brought back Blizzard, then Summoned Blizzard to bring back Kalut. He Tuned it to Blizzard for another “Sea Dragon Lord Gishilnodon” and attacked, but once again Corn had “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness”! Corn summoned a 2300 ATK “Emissary of Darkness” Token and Davara ended his turn.

Corn activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending “Necro Gardna” to the Graveyard on his way to getting “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior.” Gorz attacked Sea Dragon Lord, Garoth made a direct attack, and the Emissary attacked directly. Davara’s last in-hand card was “Lightning Vortex” and he couldn’t draw next turn, so there was nothing he could do. He extended the handshake to Corn and this Match was over!

Davin Davara comes within inches of defeating Adam Corn, but in the end Corn ekes out the win and goes home one Dark End Dragon richer! Regardless, Davara put forth a great effort all weekend, and I doubt this is the last we’ll be seeing of him in the Dueling spotlight. Congratulations to both Duelists!
