Feature Match, Top 4: Morandice Black vs. Henry Vi

October 18th, 2009

Both Morandice Black and Henry Vi have made it here to the Top 4 with Lightsworn. One of these competitors was about to win a seat in the Finals and a copy of “Dark End Dragon.” The other would compete for a copy of Dark End in the third-place playoff.

Black won the roll and started the Match off with “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress.” He Set one card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone, then sent “Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Solar Recharge,” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Wulf.

Vi had “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk,” “Judgment Dragon,” “Solar Recharge,” “Honest,” “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner.” He discarded Ehren for “Solar Recharge,” drew another Recharge and another “Honest,” and sent “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid” and “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior” to his Graveyard. He Summoned Lumina, discarded his second Recharge, and Special Summoned Garoth with Lumina’s ability. Garoth attacked Lyla, Black activated “Honest” during damage calculation, and Vi made the mistake of Chaining his own “Honest” in response. He lost his Garoth and took 1700 damage. He Set a card to his back row and sent “My Body As A Shield,” “Necro Gardna,” and “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” to his Graveyard with Lumina’s ability.

He lost his Set “Torrential Tribute” to Lyla next turn, and Black Tributed Lyla for Celestia, destroying Lumina. Celestia’s effect sent 4 cards to Black’s Graveyard, including “Necro Gardna” and “Judgment Dragon,” and he made two direct attacks.

Vi had just 1900 Life Points remaining and Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon.” He activated its effect, but Black Chained “My Body As A Shield” to negate “Judgment Dragon’s” destruction ability and destroy it in turn. Vi immediately conceded.

The pressure seems to get to Henry Vi, as a misplayed “Honest” unravels the entire Duel and Morandice Black takes the first win! Both competitors quickly made use of their Side Decks before diving into Duel 2.

Vi opened with “Necro Gardna,” “Honest,” “Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Plaguespreader Zombie,” “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid,” and “Bottomless Trap Hole.” He activated Charge, sending “Judgment Dragon,” “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” and “Lightning Vortex” to his Graveyard to get “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner.” He Summoned her, discarded “Necro Gardna,” and Special Summoned Garoth with her effect. He Set Bottomless, then sent “Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer,” “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin,” “Mystical Space Typhoon,” “Solar Recharge,” and “My Body As A Shield” to the Graveyard – no draw with Garoth.

Black activated “Charge of the Light Brigade,” sending another Charge, “Judgment Dragon,” and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” to his Graveyard. He searched out Garoth, then discarded “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” for “Lightning Vortex”: Vi’s Lumina and Garoth were destroyed. Vi had Bottomless Set.

He Summoned Lumina, discarded Garoth, and Special Summoned Lyla – Vi responded with “Bottomless Trap Hole,” removing Lyla from the game. Black Set a card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone and attacked for 1000 damage. Lumina then sent “Torrential Tribute,” “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin,” and “Solar Recharge” to the Graveyard.

Vi drew “Solar Recharge,” holding “Honest,” “Plaguespreader Zombie,” and “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid.” He summoned Aurkus, inspected Black’s Graveyard for a moment, and attacked Lumina. He activated “Honest” at the start of the Damage Step and Black didn’t have any response, losing his Lumina. Aurkus Sent another “Honest” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to the Graveyard in the End Phase, Special Summoning Wulf.

Black drew to 2 cards in hand, with one card Set in his back row. Vi had two cards in hand as well, with Aurkus and Wulf on the field. Black Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon.” He looked through Vi’s Graveyard, counting “Honests,” and contemplating whether or not he wanted to destroy his own “Beckoning Light” to clear the field. He eventually paid his 1000 Life Points, chaining “Beckoning Light” to trade his “My Body As A Shield” for another “Judgment Dragon”!

He attacked with the first, and held the second copy. He sent 4 cards to his Graveyard, including another Gardna, in his End Phase. Vi drew and Set “Necro Gardna.”

Black blew it away with “Judgment Dragon’s” effect, attacked, and Vi removed his Gardna to block the damage. Black sent another 4 cards to his Graveyard, this time Special Summoning a Wulf.

“Charge of the Light Brigade” sent Lumina, “Bottomless Trap Hole,” and another Charge to Vi’s Graveyard. He searched out Garoth and discarded it for “Solar Recharge,” drawing Lyla and another “Necro Gardna.” He sent “Brain Control” and “Beckoning Light” to the Graveyard, Setting “Necro Gardna” as his only move.

Black Tribute Summoned “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” Tributing Wulf to destroy “Necro Gardna.” He sent his 4 cards to the Graveyard and reeled a bit when the Gardna was revealed – he still had 12 cards left in his Deck, a comfortable number. Vi had 4000 Life Points left, while Black had 4800 with a second “Judgment Dragon” waiting in the wings.

Celestia attacked for 2300 damage, while “Judgment Dragon’s” attack was negated by “Necro Gardna.” Vi Set a monster and play was back to Black. He paid 1000 Life Points to destroy everything on the field except his own “Judgment Dragon,” then played the second copy – Vi offered the handshake and conceded, having only one “Necro Gardna” left and facing two attacks!

Double “Judgment Dragons” clinch the Match for Morandice Black, who moves on to compete in the Finals!
