Deck Profile: Daniel Misner’s Vayu Turbo Deck

November 14th, 2009

For many Duelists this weekend the number one card-to-get from Stardust Overdrive is “Blackwing – Silverwind the Ascendant.” Blackwings have experienced a big surge in popularity, and virtually every Blackwing Duelist here today is playing Silverwind. Just as we saw at the SHONEN JUMP Championship in Orlando, Florida, Blackwing Decks are being built in two varieties: the regular Blackwing Deck, and Vayu Turbo.

Daniel Misner is one of many Duelists playing the Vayu Turbo variant – a Deck that seeks to load the Graveyard as quickly as possible with high-Level Blackwings and “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” to Special Summon Synchro Monsters. The Deck sets up with “Dark Grepher,” and then re-uses the Blackwings it removes for Vayu’s effect by returning them to the Graveyard with “Burial From a Different Dimension.” Misner’s version is a savvy build with plenty of cool plays – here’s what it looks like:

Misner’s plan is to use “Dark Grepher” to load the Graveyard as early as possible with cards like “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” and “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn.” Together, those cards feed Vayu’s effect and allow Misner to Special Summon “Blackwing Armed Wing” from his Extra Deck. When Armed Wing hits the Graveyard, a second Vayu can trade up to Special Summon “Blackwing Armor Master.” And if Armor Master goes down, then a third Vayu will bring out the star of the show, “Blackwing – Silverwind the Ascendant.”

Misner can speed that process up by skipping the first step – he runs one copy of “Blackwing – Elphin the Raven.” He can use Grepher’s effect to send Elphin to the Graveyard, and from there his first Vayu will get him straight to “Blackwing Armor Master.” He can also send “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard to Tune it to Grepher or another Level 4, Synchro Summoning “Goyo Guardian.” “Plaguespreader Zombie” can be paired with “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow” for the important Level 5 “Ally of Justice Catastor” from Hidden Arsenal.

The new Level 9 “Mist Wurm” from Hidden Arsenal is also included in Misner’s Extra Deck, and he has a number of ways in which he can bring it out. If he can keep Kalut on the field for a turn, he can follow it up with “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North.” Blizzard’s effect can Special Summon a Level 4 monster from Misner’s Graveyard, giving him the exact Synchro Materials he’d need to Synchro Summon “Mist Wurm” and bounce up to three cards back to his opponent’s hand. With the field-clearing power of “Mist Wurm” wiping away Spells, Traps, and even monsters, Misner is free to capitalize and follow up, using “Burial From a Different Dimension” to reuse Vayu’s effect and flood the field with Synchros to make game. “Mist Wurm” has 2500 ATK itself, so even just a single Blackwing Synchro Monster can be enough to finish the Duel after Wurm clears the way.

Three copies of “Black Whirlwind” help feed Misner enough cards to make big plays even without his combos, and “Dark Eruption” lets him reuse any of his low-ATK Dark monsters: Kalut, Blizzard, Gale, or “Plaguespreader Zombie.”

While some competitors choose to run just 2 copies of Vayu, playing 3 makes it more likely for Misner to bring back 2 Vayus at a time with a single “Burial From a Different Dimension.” If he ever draws copies he can’t use with “Icarus Attack,” Misner can also discard Vayu for “Dark Grepher’s” effect, or remove it for “Allure of Darkness” so he can send it to the Graveyard later with Burial.

Daniel Misner’s Vayu Turbo Deck is a great build with a lot of strong choices. He’s made some innovative picks to take advantage of Silverwind and the new Synchro Monsters from Hidden Arsenal.
