Round 3 Feature Match: Chris Miller vs. Detrick Perry

November 14th, 2009

Chris Miller is undefeated so far in this tournament with one of the new Decks emerging from Stardust Overdrive –Kristya Lightsworn. “Archlord Kristya” adds 3 more high-ATK monsters to Lightsworn, prevents Special Summons, and lets the Deck reuse “Honest” and play with “Trade-In.” The new “Shire, Lightsworn Spirit” monster makes a cameo appearance too, and is the only Fairy monster you can search for with “Charge of the Light Brigade.”

Miller’s opponent is Detrick Perry, a Blackwing Duelist armed with new Synchro Monsters like “Blackwing – Silverwind the Ascendant” and “Ally of Justice Catastor.” That Catastor may cause problems for Miller, but only if he can sneak it past Kristya’s “no Special Summoning” ability.

Miller opened the match with a hand of 2 “Solar Recharge,” “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” “Smashing Ground,” “Heavy Storm,” and “Archlord Kristya.” He activated Recharge, discarded Celestia, and drew “Honest” and “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin.” He sent “Trade-In” and “Charge of the Light Brigade” to his Graveyard. He then Summoned Jain, ended his turn, and sent “Trade-In” and Kristya to his Graveyard.

Perry activated “Black Whirlwind,” Summoned “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame,” and searched his Deck for “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow.” He Set a Spell or Trap Card, Set another, and ended. Miller drew “Judgment Dragon,” activated “Heavy Storm,” and Perry Chained “Mind Crush,” discarding Miller’s “Honest.” Perry’s Whirlwind and “My Body As A Shield” were destroyed.

“Smashing Ground” destroyed Shura, Jain made a direct attack, and Miller sent “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior” and “Necro Gardna” to his Graveyard. Perry drew to 4 cards in hand, activated “Allure of Darkness,” drew 2, and removed Kalut. He Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North,” Special Summoned Shura, and Tuned the two together to Synchro Summon “Goyo Guardian.” He attacked, Miller removed “Necro Gardna” to stop the attack, and Perry Set a Spell or Trap Card.

Miller drew “Honest.” He attacked with Jain, activated “Honest’s” effect, and Goyo went down to the tune of 2100 damage. Perry was down to 4100 Life Points, and in Main Phase 2 Miller Special Summoned “Archlord Kristya”! Kristya hit the field, Miller targeted his Celestia to take back with Kristya’s effect, and Perry Chained “Torrential Tribute.” Kristya went back to the top of the Deck, Miller discarded Celestia for “Solar Recharge” next turn, and drew Kristya again! He Special Summoned her, took back “Honest,” and Set a card to his back row to finish out. He ended with “Judgment Dragon” and “Honest” in hand.

Perry Set a Spell or Trap and ended. Miller attacked with Kristya, hit “Mirror Force,” and Kristya went back on top of his Deck. Miller Set a second Spell or Trap, Perry activated Allure, and removed his “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.” He Set another card to his back row. Miller drew Kristya but now had just 3 Fairies in his Graveyard – not enough to Special Summon it quite yet. But he did have 4 Lightsworn monsters! He attacked with “Honest,” dropping Perry to 3000 Life Points. He returned “Honest” back to his hand in Main Phase 2. Perry Summoned “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind,” attacked for 1300 damage, and ended. Miller drew Ryko.

He Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon,” activated its effect, and Perry Chained “Icarus Attack”! Miller Chained “Beckoning Light,” brought back Lumina, Garoth, and Kristya to his hand, then Special Summoned Kristya for a third time! He brought back “Honest” with Kristya’s effect, attacked for 2800 damage, and ended. Perry now had just 200 Life Points left, and was stuck with a “Dark Armed Dragon” he couldn’t Special Summon – he had three DARK monsters in his Graveyard, but no way to get around Kristya’s effect that prevented the Special Summon. He conceded.

Chris Miller Special Summons “Archlord Kristya” 3 times, powering through Detrick Perry with “Honest” after “Honest,” before locking him out of a comeback with “Dark Armed Dragon”! Play proceeded to the second Duel.

Perry opened Duel 2 with a Set monster and a Set card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Miller had “Honest,” “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” “Necro Gardna,” “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid,” “Archlord Kristya,” and “Monster Reincarnation.” He Normal Summoned “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid,” attacked into “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor,” and sent “Royal Decree” and “Mystical Space Typhoon” to the Graveyard.

Perry activated “Black Whirlwind.” He Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” searched his Deck for “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow,” and Special Summoned “Blackwing – Bora the Spear.” He boosted Sirocco’s ATK, attacked, activated Kalut’s effect, and Aurkus went down. Miller was down to 4100 Life Points.

Miller Summoned “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” discarded “Necro Gardna” for her effect, and Special Summoned Aurkus. He ended, then sent “Solar Recharge,” “Trade-In,” “Necro Gardna,” “Smashing Ground,” and “Charge of the Light Brigade” to his Graveyard.

Perry Normal Summoned another “Blackwing – Bora the Spear.” He searched his Deck for another Kalut with Whirlwind’s effect, boosted Sirocco’s ATK, then attempted to attack Aurkus – Miller removed “Necro Gardna” to block the attack. Next turn he drew another Kristya.

Miller Tributed “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner” for “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel,” sending 2 “Judgment Dragons,” “Trade-In,” and Jain to his Graveyard to destroy Bora and Sirocco. Not what Miller wanted to see in his Graveyard at the moment – he needed to get some Fairies going. He sent Celestia to attack Bora, activated “Honest’s” effect, and hit Perry for 2300 damage. Aurkus hit for 1200 damage, then sent two cards to the Graveyard – another “Necro Gardna” and “Shire, Lightsworn Spirit”! If Celestia was destroyed then “Monster Reincarnation” next turn would set Miller up to unleash both “Judgment Dragon” and Kristya together.

Perry Normal Summoned “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame,” searching out “Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind.” Shura attacked Aurkus, Miller blocked it with “Necro Gardna,” and Perry had to think for a while in Main Phase 2. He eventually Special Summoned Gale, Tuned it to Shura, and Synchro Summoned “Black Rose Dragon” to clear the field – now Celestia was in the Graveyard, and Miller had 3 Fairies! Perry lost his Whirlwind and “Icarus Attack,” destroying Aurkus and Celestia. He removed Vayu and Sirocco to Special Summon “Blackwing Armed Wing” before ending his turn.

Miller discarded one Kristya for “Monster Reincarnation,” taking back “Judgment Dragon.” That gave him his 4 Fairies. He Special Summoned “Judgment Dragon,” paid 1000 Life Points to clear the field, then Special Summoned Kristya! Even if Perry had “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness” it was game over due to Kristya’s effect – Perry knew it, and immediately offered the handshake.

The united power of “Judgment Dragon” and “Archlord Kristya” is just too much, as Chris Miller defeats Detrick Perry 2-0 with his Kristya Lightsworn Deck!

Matt Peddle (2009 Canadian National Championship Runner-Up; Five-Time Top 8 National Finalist)
Perry makes a great read on his first turn of the match by not attacking into “Jain, Lightsworn Paladin” when Miller had “Honest” in his hand. Perry also has the perfect card to counter “Honest” in “Mind Crush.” Perry uses his turn to fetch a “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow” with “Black Whirlwind” and sets “My Body as a Shield” and “Mind Crush.” This play allows him to easily defend against both “Honest” and “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” plays and puts any Lightsworn player into a very tough spot unless they have “Heavy Storm.” Unfortunately for Perry his opponent does have “Heavy Storm” and Perry loses all his stuff and eventually the Duel. Had he not played his “Black Whirlwind” and “Shura the Blue Flame” on the first turn, he could have lost only “My Body as a Shield” and chained “Mind Crush.” That would allow him to make use of his “Black Whirlwind” for more than one turn and would allow Shura to attack without fear of “Honest.”

This Match as a whole showed us, for the first time, the power and force that “Archlord Kristya” contains. The ability to bounce itself right back on top of your deck to be reused over and over again showed its usefulness in this Match, and I’m sure it’ll be a very important card in the future.
