Absolute Powerforce Preview: Gravekeeper’s Priestess

January 9th, 2010

One lucky Duelist here today could win the Absolute Powerforce Sneak Peek promo card, 4 weeks before anyone else, in the ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!! Tournament. One of four available prizes is a gigantic version of the card everyone can get on February 6th and 7th at the Sneak Peek. “Gravekeeper’s Priestess” is the newest card in the Gravekeeper’s legacy, which started back in 2003 in Pharaonic Guardian.

“Gravekeeper’s Priestess” is a Level 3 DARK monster with 1000 ATK and 1500 DEF. If there are no Field Spell Cards in play, the field is treated as “Necrovalley” while “Gravekeeper’s Priestess” is face-up. In addition, “Gravekeeper’s Priestess” boosts all of your face-up Gravekeeper’s monsters by 200 ATK and DEF (including herself). Combine that small boost with the 500 ATK and DEF boost that “Necrovalley” will give your Gravekeeper’s monsters to power them all up by 700 ATK and DEF!

Gravekeepers were first introduced in Pharaonic Guardian more than 6 years ago. A special group of cards was included, with effects that could only be activated while “Necrovalley” is in play. “Gravekeeper’s Assailant,” for example, is a monster that can change the battle position of an opponent’s monster when it attacks, but only if “Necrovalley” is in play. “Royal Tribute” is a Spell Card that can discard all Monster Cards from both players’ hands, but also requires “Necrovalley” to be in play. Both of these cards were critical to the success of Gravekeeper Decks.

With “Gravekeeper’s Priestess,” it’s easier than ever to activate these card effects. You can Normal Summon her from your hand, or Special Summon her with “Rite of Spirit” whenever you need “Necrovalley” but didn’t draw it. Or you can Special Summon her from the Deck with the Flip Effect of “Gravekeeper’s Spy.” Even if you’ve used up all 3 copies of “Necrovalley,” you can still count on “Gravekeeper’s Priestess” to turn on the effects of these cards.

Luckily for Gravekeeper Duelists, “Gravekeeper’s Priestess” isn’t the only Gravekeeper card in Absolute Powerforce. We’re also getting 3 more that may put Gravekeeper’s back on the competitive map!

First up is “Gravekeeper’s Descendant.” “Gravekeeper’s Descendant” starts off with 1500 ATK and lets you Tribute any Gravekeeper’s monster other than itself to destroy a card your opponent controls! With cards like “Rite of Spirit” and “Gravekeeper’s Spy” letting you swarm the field with Gravekeepers, “Gravekeeper’s Descendant” gives you a strong way to eliminate several opposing threats. You can even Special Summon “Gravekeeper’s Descendant” from your Deck with “Gravekeeper’s Spy” before Tributing the Spy for Descendant’s effect. 1500 ATK may not seem like much at first, but after it’s boosted up to 2000 ATK by “Necrovalley,” “Gravekeeper’s Descendant” can be a tough monster for your opponent to deal with.

Next up is the 2000 ATK monster, “Gravekeeper’s Visionary.” Even though “Gravekeeper’s Visionary” is a Level 8 monster, you can Normal Summon it by Tributing just 1 Gravekeeper’s monster. You can still Special Summon it with cards like “Rite of Spirit” and “Gravekeeper’s Chief,” too. Not only does “Gravekeeper’s Visionary” get 200 ATK for every Gravekeeper monster in your Graveyard, but you can also discard a Gravekeeper monster whenever it would be destroyed, in order to keep it on the field! With another Gravekeeper’s monster added to the Graveyard, it’ll even get another 200 ATK boost when you use this effect. If you have any Gravekeepers in your hand, your opponent will have trouble getting your “Gravekeeper’s Visionary” off the field.

The last of the Gravekeeper support cards in Absolute Powerforce is the Normal Spell Card “Gravekeeper’s Stele.” “Gravekeeper’s Stele” can retrieve 2 Gravekeeper’s monsters from your Graveyard and return them to your hand. Since it can’t be negated by “Necrovalley,” you can even use its effect late in the game after you’ve played and protected your “Necrovalley.” There are tons of options to choose with “Gravekeeper’s Stele,” including “Gravekeeper’s Priestess,” Gravekeeper’s Descendant,” and “Gravekeeper’s Visionary.” If you need a “Necrovalley” in a pinch, you can even bring back “Gravekeeper’s Commandant” to search for it. “Gravekeeper’s Spy” can be retrieved as a solid defender that will help swarm the field and “Gravekeeper’s Guard” can be returned if you need to get rid of an opponent’s Synchro Monster. Since “Gravekeeper’s Stele” brings back 2 Gravekeeper’s monsters, you can also discard the cards you bring back to provide two more lives for your “Gravekeeper’s Visionary.”

Use “Gravekeeper’s Stele” to return two Gravekeeper’s to your hand!

Gravekeepers aren’t the only theme getting powerful new support! Absolute Powerforce has many more cards for you to add to your favorite Decks and you can see them all at the upcoming Sneak Peek!
