Deck Profile: Jordan Hodges’ Ultimate Blackwing Deck

February 27th, 2010

There are only 2 days left before the Forbidden & Limited Cards List changes on March 1, but players are still coming up with innovative ideas to get ahead of the competition using the current list. Jordan Hodges is here today playing a Blackwing Deck unlike any other. Hodges’s Ultimate Blackwing Deck can play out a Match just like any other Blackwing Deck, but it’s capable of so much more. With “Ultimate Offering” and “Black Whirlwind” on the field, Hodges can Summon one Blackwing after another to end the game in a single turn!

Monsters Spells Traps
1x Shadow Priestess of Ohm
3x Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame
3x Blackwing – Bora the Spear
3x Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn
1x Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind
2x Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North
3x Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow
1x Dark Armed Dragon
1x Blackwing – Elphin the Raven
1x Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor
3x Black Whirlwind
2x Hand Destruction
1x Card Destruction
2x Allure of Darkness
1x Brain Control
1x Heavy Storm
2x Bottomless Trap Hole
3x Reckless Greed
2x Icarus Attack
2x Ultimate Offering
1x Torrential Tribute
1x Trap Dustshoot

With “Ultimate Offering” and “Black Whirlwind” both on the field, Summoning one Blackwing can set off a chain of searches and Summons.

If Hodges has “Black Whirlwind” and “Ultimate Offering” on the field when he Summons “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn,” he can search his Deck for “Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame” and add it to his hand. Then he can Normal Summon Shura by paying 500 Life Points with “Ultimate Offering” and search his Deck for “Blackwing – Bora the Spear.” By Normal Summoning that too, at the cost of 500 Life Points, he can search his Deck for “Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow.” By Normal Summoning Kalut, he can search his Deck for “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North.” And by Summoning “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North”, Hodges will have over 8000 ATK on the field, even if there are no Blackwing monsters in the Graveyard for him to bring back!

Hodges can also use “Shadow Priestess of Ohm” to Tribute off his Blackwing monsters after he Summons them to the field, and replaces them in his hand with the effect of “Black Whirlwind.” Since Hodges can use “Black Whirlwind” to search for as many as 7 monsters in a single turn with the help of “Ultimate Offering,” Hodges will have no problem launching them all with the Priestess to deal over 6000 damage. Then, he can remove the “Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn” and “Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor” he Tributed with the Priestess to Special Summon “Blackwing Armed Wing” and attack for the win!

One of the coolest combos Hodges can execute involves Summoning “Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier” while Sirocco, “Ultimate Offering,” and “Black Whirlwind” are on the field. It’s easy to Synchro Summon Brionac, since Hodges can search his Deck for “Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North” with “Black Whirlwind” when Sirocco is Normal Summoned. Then, Hodges can Normal Summon another Blackwing by paying 500 Life Points and pump it up with Sirocco’s effect. By pitching a card and returning Sirocco to his hand, he can Normal Summon another monster, Tribute it for Sirocco, and pump his Blackwing up again! He can keep repeating this combo as long as he has monsters to Summon and cards in his hand to discard. Since “Black Whirlwind” keeps refilling Hodges’s hand with Blackwing monsters, Hodges can pump his weakest Blackwing up to extraordinary heights! This won’t happen often, but it sure is a cool way to win!

Since Hodges needs “Black Whirlwind” and “Ultimate Offering” to execute all of his Deck’s best plays, he runs 3 copies of “Reckless Greed,” 2 copies of “Hand Destruction,” 2 copies of “Allure of Darkness,” and 1 copy of “Card Destruction” to draw them out. But even without these cards, Hodges’s Deck can function as a Normal Blackwing Deck, running all of the cool Blackwing tricks including “Icarus Attack.”

Hodges’s explosive Ultimate Blackwing Deck will surprise a lot of Duelists today, giving him an edge in the tournament. Even this late in under the current Forbidden & Limited list, innovation can be the key to victory.
