Round 9 Feature Match: Chris Bowlds vs. Matt Hoey

February 27th, 2010

Both of these competitors hold 7-1 records heading into this round, and both are just 2 Match wins away from a guaranteed seat in the Top 16 tomorrow! Chris Bowlds is running Lightsworn, while Matt Hoey is playing Zombies with “Deep Sea Diva.” The Match began with a friendly handshake, offered by Hoey and accepted cheerfully by Bowlds.

Bowlds Set a Spell or Trap, then Summoned “Ehren, Lightsworn Monk.” He ended his turn and sent “Honest,” “Solar Recharge,” and “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress” to his Graveyard with Ehren’s effect. Hoey activated “Allure of Darkness,” drew 2 cards, and removed “Tragoedia.”

He activated “Heavy Storm,” destroying Bowlds’ face-down “Mirror Force.” He Summoned “Deep Sea Diva,” used its effect to Special Summon another from his Deck, then took Ehren with “Brain Control.” Hoey Tuned one Diva to Ehren for “Goyo Guardian,” then attacked for 2800 damage. He Set one card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone to finish out.

Bowlds drew “Solar Recharge,” and discarded “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast” to draw “Heavy Storm” and “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter,” sending “Beckoning Light” and “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness” to his Graveyard. He Set Ryko.

Hoey Summoned “Mystic Tomato” next turn, Tuned it to Diva, and Synchro Summoned “Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier.” He discarded another Tomato to bounce away Ryko, attacked with “Goyo Guardian,” then attacked with Brionac. Bowlds had just 100 Life Points left.

Bowlds activated “Heavy Storm” next turn, and Hoey lost his “Book of Moon.” Bowlds Summoned “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” discarded “Plaguespreader Zombie” for her effect, Special Summoned “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast,” and placed a card on top of his Deck to get Plaguespreader to the field. He Tuned it to Wulf for “Goyo Guardian,” attacked Brionac, took control of it, and discarded Ryko to bounce away his opponent’s “Goyo Guardian.” He sent 3 cards, including a Wulf, to his Graveyard in the End Phase with Lumina – he Special Summoned the Wulf.

Hoey drew to 2 cards in hand, and Set both cards to his back row. Bowlds destroyed 1 of them, “Book of Moon,” with “Mystical Space Typhoon,” and then sent the remaining card back to Hoey’s hand so he could attack for the win.

Chris Bowlds fights back from 100 Life Points to defeat Matt Hoey, a huge comeback given Hoey’s 7200 Life Points! Both competitors made use of their Side Decks before quickly shuffling up for Duel 2.

Hoey activated “Allure of Darkness,” drew 2 cards, and removed “Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer.” He Set a monster, Set a card to his back row, and ended.

Bowlds had a hand of “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner,” “Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior,” “Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress,” “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness,” “Shiny Black “C”,” and “Honest.” He Summoned Lyla, but she was destroyed by Hoey’s “Bottomless Trap Hole.” Next turn Hoey Flip Summoned “Spirit Reaper.” He attacked, Bowlds Special Summoned “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness” and a 300 ATK “Emissary of Darkness Token,” and lost his Garoth to Reaper’s effect. Hoey ended his turn with a Set to his Spell & Trap Card Zone.

Bowlds Normal Summoned Lumina, discarded “Shiny Black “C”,” and Special Summoned Garoth. Gorz attacked “Spirit Reaper,” then Garoth attacked it, and then Lumina, while the “Emissary of Darkness Token” remained in Defense Position. Lumina sent “Necro Gardna,” “Monster Reincarnation,” and “Charge of the Light Brigade” to the Graveyard in the End Phase, while Garoth sent “The Transmigration Prophecy” and Lumina to the Graveyard. Bowlds drew 1 card for Garoth’s effect.

Hoey discarded “Mezuki” for “Lightning Vortex,” clearing the field! He had 3350 Life Points and attacked with “Spirit Reaper.” Bowlds removed “Necro Gardna” to stop it. Hoey Summoned “Deep Sea Diva,” got another one in Defense Position from his Deck, and Tuned 1 Diva to “Spirit Reaper” Synchro Summon “Magical Android.” He then removed “Mezuki” to Special Summon “Spirit Reaper” in Defense Position.

Bowlds had 2 “Solar Recharge,” “Honest,” and “Plaguespreader Zombie.” He Set “Honest,” Set both copies of Recharge, and ended. “Magical Android” destroyed “Honest” in battle next turn, and Hoey added another Set card to his back row. Bowlds drew “Royal Decree,” Set it, and Set “Plaguespreader Zombie.”

Hoey attacked with Android again, this time destroying Plaguespreader. He Tuned Diva to “Spirit Reaper” for “Ally of Justice Catastor,” lost it to “Shiny Black “C”’s” effect, and Set a monster. Bowlds Set “Royal Decree” next turn and ended.

Hoey Summoned “Mezuki,” Tuned it to “Plaguespreader Zombie,” and Synchro Summoned “Doomkaiser Dragon.” He used its effect to take his opponent’s “Plaguespreader Zombie,” Tuned it to Doomkaiser for “Stardust Dragon,” then removed “Mezuki” for “Doomkaiser Dragon.” He took back Bowlds’ “Plaguespreader Zombie” again, Tuned it to Doomkaiser for “Red Dragon Archfiend,” and when he activated “Book of Life” to bring back Doomkaiser a third time, Bowlds just gave it up and conceded.

Matt Hoey explodes in the late game to Special Summon 5 Synchro Monsters in a single turn, which means we’re going to a third Duel! Another win here, followed by one more victory next round, would guarantee a spot in Day 2. The pressure was on.

Bowlds had 2 “Solar Recharges,” “Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid,” “Necro Gardna,” “Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer,” and “Wulf, Lightsworn Beast.” He discarded Wulf for Recharge, drawing 2 cards and sending “Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner” and “Heavy Storm” to the Graveyard. He discarded Aurkus next for another Recharge, this time sending “Celestia, Lightsworn Angel” and “Shiny Black “C”” to the Graveyard.

He Set a card to his Spell & Trap Card Zone, Summoned Ehren, and sent “Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter,” “The Transmigration Prophecy,” and “Beckoning Light” to his Graveyard.

Hoey activated “Allure of Darkness,” drew 2 cards, and removed “Spirit Reaper.” He Summoned “Mezuki” to attack and destroy Ehren, Set a card to his back row and Bowlds flipped “Royal Decree” in the End Phase.

Bowlds activated “Monster Reincarnation” next turn, discarding “Necro Gardna” to get back Lumina. He Summoned Kycoo, attacked, and destroyed “Mezuki.” He ended with Celestia, Lumina, and another Kycoo in-hand. All Hoey did next turn was Set another monster.

Bowlds Summoned Lumina, discarded “Torrential Tribute” to Special Summon Ehren, and Ehren kicked Hoey’s “Goblin Zombie” back to his Deck. Kycoo attacked to remove “Mezuki” from Hoey’s Graveyard, and Lumina made a direct attack, knocking Hoey down to 5100 Life Points.

Hoey Set another card to his back row – his only move next turn. Bowlds discarded a Lumina for the effect of his on-field Lumina, Special Summoning Aurkus. He had a combined 5600 ATK on the field, and Hoey had only 5100 Life Points left. Ehren attacked first, hitting for 1600 damage. Kycoo attacked next, and Hoey turned it face-down with “Book of Moon”! Aurkus attacked for 1200 Battle Damage, Lumina struck for another 1000, and Bowlds sent 8 cards to his Graveyard in the End Phase. He Special Summoned a Wulf in the process.

Hoey had just 1300 Life Points left. “I only have one move, and it’s so, so bad.” He activated “Foolish Burial,” sending “Plaguespreader Zombie” to his Graveyard. He Normal Summoned “Zombie Master,” discarded Gorz for its effect, and Special Summoned Plaguespreader to Synchro Summon Brionac – but lost it to the effect of “Shiny Black “C”.”

He followed up with “Burial From a Different Dimension,” returning everything to his Graveyard. He removed “Mezuki” to Special Summon “Spirit Reaper,” brought back “Plaguespreader Zombie,” and Synchro Summoned “Ally of Justice Catastor.” Bowlds revealed that he had Celestia, and Hoey immediately offered the handshake.

Chris Bowlds takes the match 2-1, and moves on with an 8-1 record and a great shot at Day 2!

See what our panel of experts had to say after the Duel.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
In Duel 2, Bowlds needed to be more careful about the “Plaguespreader Zombie” he let sit in his Graveyard. Hoey ended up Special Summoning it multiple times with “Doomkaiser Dragon.” This could have been avoided if Bowlds had opted not to Set it in Defense Position or had revived it from his Graveyard (and Tuned it to “Honest”) so it would quickly get removed from play.

Michael McTavish (Top 8 Finalist – 2009 Canadian National Championship)
The most unfortunate part of this match for Hoey is that if he had attacked with the second “Deep Sea Diva” along with the “Goyo Guardian” during the turn with his first attack, he would have been victorious in game 1, and ultimately, victorious in the Match.

P.J. Tierney (Duelist from across The Pond)

In Duel 1, Bowlds fought back from 100 Life Points to take down Hoey’s 7200. This shows that if you stay calm and don’t give up when things are getting intense, you might be able to turn it around. Bowlds was able to draw the cards he needed to stay in the Duel, while chipping away at Hoey’s Life Points until there weren’t any left.

In Duel 2, Bowlds Special Summoned “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness” after taking a hit from “Spirit Reaper.” Normally, you wouldn’t use Gorz after taking only 300 points of damage, since you’d only have a 300 ATK Token to go with it, but “Spirit Reaper’s” effect might have discarded Gorz if he didn’t play it, so he had to make that play.

Duel 2 also showed how powerful “Doomkaiser Dragon” can be if your opponent has a “Plaguespreader Zombie” in the Graveyard. Thanks to Doomkaiser, “Mezuki” and “Book of Life,” Hoey was able to Special Summon 5 Synchro Monsters in one turn to wipe his opponent out.
