Side Event Playoffs Feature Match: Igor Martins vs. Jessy Samek

April 26th, 2010

Jessy Samek and Igor Martins both participated in several side events this weekend, racking up enough points to earn the right to compete for a Dark End Dragon in the side events playoff. Now, they’ve each made it to the final round and are competing against one another with their Quickdraw Dandywarrior Decks. The winner here will take home that prized card.

Samek won the dice roll and opened up with Dandylion, Quickdraw Synchron, Solemn Judgment, Enemy Controller, Tytannial, Princess of Camellias, and Pot of Avarice in his hand. He started things off by discarding Dandylion to Special Summon Quickdraw Synchron and Tuning the Fluff Token to his Synchron to Synchro Summon Drill Warrior from his Extra Deck! He discarded Tytannial from his hand to remove Drill Warrior from play and then Set one card to his back row before ending his turn.

Martins Summoned Card Trooper next turn and sent the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard to boost it to 1900 ATK. He attacked and destroyed a Fluff Token next. In Main Phase 2, he Set Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Samek drew a card and returned Drill Warrior to his field, moving Dandylion from his Graveyard to his hand. He used his Drill Warrior to attack and destroy Card Trooper, dealing 2000 damage to Martins. Samek discarded Dandylion in Main Phase 2 to remove Drill Warrior from play with its effect, and then Set one more card before ending his turn.

Martins Set a card to each zone and passed right back to Samek, who returned his Drill Warrior to the field and brought Dandylion back to his hand. Then he pitched it to remove Drill Warrior from the game and Special Summon 2 Fluff Tokens. Next, he Tributed a Fluff Token he already had on the field in order to Summon Caius the Shadow Monarch. Caius’s effect removed Martins’s Set Dandylion from the game. Samek ended his turn turn.

Martins Summoned Lonefire Blossom next turn and Tributed it to Special Summon another Lonefire Blossom from his Deck. Then he Tributed that one to take Tytannial, Princess of Camellias from his Deck and Special Summon it in Attack Position. Tytannial attacked and destroyed a Fluff Token. Martins Set one more card to his back row before ending his turn.

Samek returned Drill Warrior to the field in his next turn and used its effect to bring Dandylion back to his hand. Martins flipped Book of Moon to put Drill Warrior face-down. Samek Summoned Lonefire Blossom next and Tributed a Fluff Token to activate Enemy Controller and target Tytannial. Martins negated the effect of Samek’s Enemy Controller by Tributing Tytannial. Samek Tributed Lonefire Blossom to Special Summon another copy from his Deck, and then Tributed the new copy to Special Summon Dandylion in Defense Position. He ended his turn.

Martins activated Pot of Avarice next turn to send 5 monsters from his Graveyard back to his Deck. He drew 2 cards and Set a monster face-down before ending his turn. The 2 extra cards didn’t seem to help him much.

Samek drew Morphing Jar next turn. Then he flipped his Drill Warrior face-up and Tributed a Fluff Token to Summon Caius. Caius removed Martins’ Set Treeborn Frog from the game. Samek discarded Morphing Jar to activate the effect of Drill Warrior and remove it from the game. Then he attacked with Caius, but lost his monster to Martins’s Set Dimensional Prison. Samek ended his turn, and then Martins ended his turn without making a play.

On the following turn, Samek brought back Drill Warrior again next turn, this time using its effect to bring Quickdraw Synchron back to his hand from his Graveyard. Then he Tributed Dandylion to Summon Quickdraw Synchron. He Tuned his Quickdraw Synchron with both Fluff Tokens to Summon Nitro Warrior! Next, he activated Pot of Avarice to send 5 monsters from his Graveyard to his Deck and draw 2 cards. Samek picked up Lonefire Blossom and Sangan with Pot of Avarice. Since he just activated a Spell Card, Nitro Warrior gained 1000 ATK, too! Samek attacked Martins with Drill Warrior and he lost 2400 Life Points, dropping down to 3600 Life Points. Martins Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness in Attack Position after taking the damage, and Special Summoned a 2400 ATK Token in Attack Position along with it. Nitro Warrior attacked Gorz, and Martins dropped to 2500 Life Points. Samek discarded Dandylion to remove Drill Warrior from play in Main Phase 2, ending his turn. Martins conceded after seeing his next card.

Jessy Samek wins the first Duel and Igor Martins will be going first in Duel 2!

Jesse Samek

Martins started things off by Summoning Lonefire Blossom, activating its effect to Tribute it and Summon another copy of Lonefire Blossom from his Deck. Then he Tributed that Lonefire Blossom to Summon Dandylion from his Deck in Defense Position. He Set a back row card and ended his turn.

Samek opened up with Nobleman of Crossout, Caius the Shadow Monarch, Dimensional Prison, D.D. Crow, and Pot of Avarice in his hand. He Set his Dimensional Prison and ended his turn.

Martins Summoned Card Trooper and sent the top 3 cards of his Graveyard to boost its attack to 1900 ATK next turn. Then he tried attacking directly with it, but Samek flipped his Dimensional Prison to remove it from the game.

Samek drew Tytannial, Princess of Camellias next turn and passed, dissatisfied with his draws.

However, Martins’ draws didn’t let him capitalize on this. He Set a monster and ended his turn.

Samek drew Super-Nimble Mega Hamster next turn! He activated Nobleman of Crossout to remove Martins’s Set Treeborn Frog from the game and then Set his Super-Nimble Mega Hamster in Defense Position. He ended his turn.

Martins Tributed his Dandylion to Summon Caius the Shadow Monarch next turn and removed Samek’s Hamster from play with its effect. Martins Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens with the effect of Dandylion and ended his turn.

Samek Summoned Lonefire Blossom next turn and Tributed it to Special Summon Lonefire Blossom from his Deck. Then he Tributed his new Lonefire Blossom to Special Summon Dandylion from his Deck in Defense Position. He Set Dimensional Prison and ended his turn.

Martins Tributed both of his Fluff Tokens to Summon Light and Darkness Dragon next turn! Light and Darkness Dragon attacked Dandylion and Dandylion’s effect was negated by the Dragon, costing it 500 ATK and DEF. Caius attacked directly, and Samek dropped down to 3200 Life Points. Martins Set a back row card and ended his turn.

Samek Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter next turn and passed to Martins, who attacked Ryko with Light and Darkness Dragon and negated its effect. Caius followed up with a direct attack and Samek dropped to 800 Life Points.

Samek drew Heavy Storm next turn. Then he activated the effect of his D.D. Crow, and Light and Darkness Dragon was forced to negate it, dropping down to 1300 ATK. Samek played Heavy Storm next, forcing Light and Darkness Dragon to negate once again. Then Samek used Pot of Avarice, but Light and Darkness Dragon was no longer able to negate it! He returned 5 monsters from his Graveyard to his Deck to draw Pot of Avarice and Mind Control. He conceded, still unable to destroy an 800 ATK Light and Darkness Dragon.

Igor Martins

Samek will be going first in the final Duel! The winner here would receive a Dark End Dragon prize card. Both Duelists wished each other luck and began Dueling.

Samek opened up with Light and Darkness Dragon, Treeborn Frog, 2 copies of Debris Dragon, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Gorz. He Set Mystical Space Typhoon and Treeborn Frog, ending his turn.

Martins Summoned Ehren, Lightsworn Monk on his turn and attacked Samek’s Treeborn Frog, sending it back to his Deck with Ehren’s effect. Then he Set 2 cards to his back row, but lost his Dimensional Prison to Samek’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase. He sent 3 cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard in the End Phase too due to Ehren’s effect, including a Dandylion that let him Special Summon 2 Fluff Tokens to the field.

Samek drew a card and passed to Martins, who Tributed both Fluff Tokens for Tytannial, Princess of Camellias next turn and attacked directly with Ehren. Tytannial attacked next, and Samek Special Summoned Gorz along with a 2800 ATK Token after falling to 3600 Life Points. Martins Set another back row card and sent 3 cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard in the End Phase because of Ehren’s effect.

Samek drew Dimensional Prison next turn. He switched his 2800 ATK and DEF Token to Defense Position and then attacked Ehren with Gorz. Martins flipped Mirror Force and Samek chained Enemy Controller to Tribute Gorz and take control of Ehren! Ehren was destroyed by Mirror Force. Samek Set a monster and a Dimensional Prison in Main Phase 2 before ending his turn.

Martins Summoned Dandylion next turn so he’d have a monster on the field to Tribute with Tytannial’s effect. Next, he attacked Samek’s face-down Debris Dragon with Tytannial and destroyed it. He Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone before ending his turn.

Samek drew a card next turn and had Debris Dragon, Light and Darkness Dragon, and Tytannial, Princess of Camellias in his hand. He Set the Debris Dragon and ended his turn.

Martins activated Phoenix Wing Wind Blast after drawing a card for his turn, spinning Samek’s back row card to the top of his Deck. Then he Summoned Debris Dragon and returned Lonefire Blossom from his Graveyard with its effect. He Tuned them together to Summon Black Rose Dragon, and removed a Lonefire Blossom from his Graveyard to switch Samek’s Debris Dragon into Attack Position and reduce its ATK to 0! Tytannial attacked over it and destroyed it, bringing Samek down to 800 Life Points.

Samek switched his 2800 ATK Token into Attack Position next turn and attacked Black Rose Dragon, sending it to the Graveyard. Then he Set Dimensional Prison back face-down and ended his turn.

Tytannial attacked the Emissary of Darkness Token on Martins’s next turn, and both monsters were destroyed.

Samek drew Pot of Avarice on his next turn, unable to activate it, so he passed to Martins.

Martins Summoned Treeborn Frog to the field! He declared attacks with his Frog and Dandylion. Samek removed the Dandylion from the game by activating Dimensional Prison when it attacked.

Samek drew and Set another Dimensional Prison next turn, and when Martins attacked with Treeborn Frog on the following turn, Samek activated Dimensional Prison to try to remove it from play. Martins chained Book of Moon to save his Frog by putting it face-down.

Samek Set Ryko next turn, along with a copy of Pot of Avarice he was trying to bluff with.

Martins Summoned Debris Dragon next, returning Dandylion to the field with its effect! He flipped his Treeborn Frog and then Tuned it with Dandylion and Debris Dragon to Summon Stardust Dragon! He got 2 Special Summoned Fluff Tokens, too. Stardust Dragon attacked Ryko, and Ryko sent to the Graveyard 3 cards of Samek’s Deck to his Graveyard without destroying anything.

Thanks to Ryko, Samek finally had the five monsters he needed in his Graveyard to activated Pot of Avarice. But when Samek tried to use it on his next turn, Martins chained D. D. Crow to remove one of the 5 monsters from his Graveyard. Samek Set Night Assailant after that, struggling to survive.

Martins attacked the Assailant with Stardust Dragon. Night Assailant tried to destroy Stardust Dragon, but Martins Tributed Stardust Dragon to negate its effect.

Samek drew Torrential Tribute next turn and conceded, unable to protect himself from Stardust Dragon and last another turn.

Martins wins a close 2-1 Match to earn one of the last Dark End Dragon prize cards awarded this weekend!

See what our panel of experts had to say after the Duel.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
The coolest part of this Match for me was Igor Martins’ Summoning Ehren, Lightsworn Monk. This was a sweet Side Deck choice that nobody in the Top 16 of the SHONEN JUMP Championship main event played, and it worked really well for Martins. With just 1 kick, Martins sent Treeborn Frog back to Samek’s Deck, and made Samek’s 2 in-hand copies of Debris Dragon useless. Then in the End Phase of the same turn, Ehren sent Dandylion to Martin’s Graveyard for 2 Fluff Tokens, setting up the plays that would win him a Dark End Dragon in the turns to come. Very cool!

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
In Duel 3, Martins Normal Summoned Dandylion while he already had Tytannial on the field. This was a great play because it helped Martins protect his Tytannial by providing him with a monster to Tribute if he wanted to activate her effect. Samek had Dimensional Prison face-down, but he knew that if he tried to activate it, Martins would Tribute Dandylion to negate it with Tytannial’s effect.

P.J. Tierney (Duelist from across The Pond)
Light and Darkness Dragon is one of the most powerful cards to use in a Quickdraw Dandywarrior Deck. Since you’re constantly getting free Fluff Tokens with Dandylions, Tribute Summoning Light and Darkness Dragon is easy. Once it’s out on the field, up to 4 of your opponent’s cards will be negated, forcing them to waste cards to get rid of the Dragon. You can also attack safely with the Dragon, since troublesome cards like Dimensional Prison and Mirror Force will be negated by its effect. Thanks to Light and Darkness Dragon, Martins was able to shut down all of Samek’s plays in Duel 2, and take the win.
Ehren, Lightsworn Monk was a great Side Deck choice by Martins for the Quickdraw Dandywarrior mirror Match. Ehren’s effect sends any Defence Position monster it attacks back to the Deck, so Martins is able to get rid of cards like Treeborn Frog and Dandylion without destroying them. Then during the End Phase, Ehren’s effect sends 3 cards from the top of Martins’ Deck to the Graveyard, including the Dandylion he sent at the start of Duel 3, which got him 2 Fluff Tokens.
