SJC History: The Shrink Age (2006)

April 24th, 2010

Here’s a look at some great SHONEN JUMP Championships from 2006, when Shrink reigned as the top Prize Card. Shrink was the first non-monster card to be the top prize!

SHONEN JUMP Championship #20
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Date: May 6th, 2006
Competitors: 564
Winner: Emon Ghaneian
1st Place Deck: Chaos Sorcerer Return
Runner-Up: Mike Ibrahim
2nd Place Deck: Chaos Sorcerer Return

SHONEN JUMP Championship #20 saw the debut of Shrink as the new prize. One year, one month, and one day after making the Top 8 at 2005’s SHONEN JUMP Championship Los Angeles, Emon Ghaneian would finally win his first Championship title! Ghaneian won his first of two victories here, the next coming just 6 weeks later in Denver. Ghaneian ran a focused Chaos Return build with 3 copies of Return from the Different Dimension, 2 Magical Merchants, and 3 Chaos Sorcerers, all uncommon choices for the time.

SHONEN JUMP Championship #25
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Date: July 22nd, 2006
Competitors: 808
Winner: Kyle Duncan
1st Place Deck: Recruiter Chaos
Runner-Up: David Everett
2nd Place Deck: Chaos Return
Prize Card: Shrink
The 25th SHONEN JUMP Championship was the biggest to date, dwarfing the previous record-holder by nearly 100 attendees! At the end of the day it came down to Canada’s Kyle Duncan defeating David Everett 2-0, as Duncan locked down Everett’s Trap-heavy draws with Royal Decree. Duncan’s victory broke the streak of Chaos Return, a Deck that dominated SHONEN JUMP Championship tournaments all Summer long.

SHONEN JUMP Championship #28

The last months of 2006 were all about Monarch Decks and Cyber-Stein. Bobby Chambers piloted a deck with Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, Cyber Dragon, Mystic Tomato, and Gravekeeper’s Spy to victory, while other Duelists experimented with their own similar builds. The next 3 SHONEN JUMP Championships would all be won by Apprentice Monarch Decks.

SHONEN JUMP Championship #32

The last SHONEN JUMP Championship to award the Championship Prize Card Shrink was also the last SHONEN JUMP Championship before the mid-Format addition of Cyber-Stein to the Forbidden List. David Rodriguez  Dueled his friend David Rodriguez in the finals, and clinched victory in just three turns. While Chain Strike Burn Decks were the hot new thing of the weekend, scoring two seats in Day 2, it was Cyber-Stein that won the tournament.
