Final Round Feature Match: Peter Cheng vs. Steven Harris

May 16th, 2010

One month ago in New Jersey, we saw the 75th SHONEN JUMP Championship come down to Quickdraw Dandywarrior versus Gadgets. Today we find ourselves in a similar position, with Steven Harris taking Infernities against Peter Cheng’s Machina Gadget Deck!

Cheng started the Match with Gold Sarcophagus, removing Future Fusion from the game to take it 2 turns later. Cheng Summoned Red Gadget and Set 2 cards to his back row.

Harris opened with Infernity Barrier, Infernity Necromancer, Solemn Judgment, Infernity Launcher, Heavy Storm, and Infernity Mirage. He activated Heavy Storm, destroying Cheng’s Dust Tornado and Bottomless Trap Hole! He Set everything but Mirage and ended.

Cheng Summoned Yellow Gadget, getting Green Gadget from his Deck. He attacked with Yellow Gadget, hitting Necromancer, and failing to destroy it. He Set 2 more cards to his Spell & Trap Card Zone.

Harris drew Starlight Road, Set it, and ended.

Cheng got his Future Fusion, activated it, and Harris activated Solemn Judgment to negate it! Cheng Tributed Yellow Gadget for Cyber Dragon, activated his Set Solidarity, and ran over Necromancer with Cyber Dragon. Red Gadget attacked directly, and Harris was down to 1100 Life Points. Cheng Set another Spell or Trap.

Harris Summoned Infernity Mirage, activated his Set Infernity Launcher, and discarded Infernity Beetle for Infernity Launcher’s effect. He sent Mirage to the Graveyard, Special Summoned Beetle and Necromancer, and Tributed Beetle to Summon 2 more from his Deck. He Tuned 1 Beetle to Necromancer, Synchro Summoning Ally of Justice Catastor. He then attacked Cyber Dragon with Catastor, destroying the Dragon with Catastor’s effect! In Main Phase 2 Harris sent his Launcher to the Graveyard, Summoning Infernity Necromancer and Infernity Beetle. He Synchro Summoned Magical Android this time and ended, gaining 600 Life Points to go back to 1700.

Cheng Summoned Green Gadget. He activated its effect, but Harris negated it and destroyed it with Infernity Barrier! That left Cheng free to Special Summon Cyber Dragon with Call of the Haunted, and he sent Cyber Dragon and Ally of Justice Catastor to the graveyard to Summon Chimeratech Fortress Dragon! Fortress Dragon destroyed Android, Red Gadget destroyed Beetle, and Cheng ended. Harris conceded after seeing his next card.

Peter Cheng was just 1 win away from winning this event! Both competitors immediately went to work, rotating cards in and out of their Side Decks. “It’s okay,” stated Harris. “I lose Game 1’s alot!” Harris was not packing this one in yet.

Steven Harris

Harris opened the second Duel with Infernity Avenger, Starlight Road, Dust Tornado, Dark Grepher, Solemn Judgment, and Infernity Inferno. He Set Starlight Road, Set Dust Tornado, and Set Solemn Judgment, then Summoned Dark Grepher.

Cheng Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, attacked Grepher, and Set a monster, following up by Setting 3 cards to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. He lost 1, Call of the Haunted, to Dust Tornado in the End Phase.

Harris drew Torrential Tribute, Set it, and Set Infernity Avenger.

Cheng attacked with Cyber Dragon, destroyed Avenger, and Set a third Sell or Trap again.

Harris drew Foolish Burial. He Set it and ended.

Cheng attacked next turn for 2100 damage with Cyber Dragon.

Harris drew Phoenix Wing Wind Blast – another totally unhelpful card. He activated Foolish Burial, sending Infernity Archfiend to his Graveyard. He Set Wind Blast, and Cheng destroyed it with Dust Tornado!

Cyber Dragon attacked again, dropping Harris to 3400 Life Points, and Cheng Set another Spell or Trap.

Harris drew and Set a monster.

Cheng Flip Summoned Card Trooper and Harris responded with Torrential Tribute. He wanted to flip Starlight Road in response to his own Torrential, but Cheng had his own Starlight Road to Chain first! Harris couldn’t Chain his as a result, and had to activate Solemn Judgment! He dropped to 1700 Life Points, Cheng drew for Card Trooper when Torrential cleared the field, and he Summoned Machina Gearframe to claim the Match and the tournament!

Peter Cheng wins the 76th of the ongoing Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series, taking home a netbook, an Ultra Rare set of Darklord Asmodeus, Darklord Edeh Arae, and Darklord Superbia, and a paid trip to the National Championship!

Peter Cheng Wins!

Post-Event Analysis!

See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
In Duel 1, Cheng left a Red Gadget and Cyber Dragon on the field before ending his turn. This was a risky play, because Cheng didn’t know whether or not Harris had a Chimeratech Fortress Dragon in his Extra Deck. If he did, Harris could’ve fused both of Cheng’s monsters together to Summon it. Fortunately for Cheng, Harris didn’t have Chimeratech Fortress Dragon in his Extra Deck, and wasn’t able to capitalize on his play.

P.J. Tierney (Duelist from across The Pond)
Not many people pay attention to what Type of monster their Synchros are, often forgetting that Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier is a Sea Serpent or that Ally of Justice Catastor is a Machine. Since Catastor was a Machine-Type though, Cheng was able to get rid of Harris’ copy by Summoning his Cyber Dragon and combining the 2 to Summon Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, a trick that’s often used against Gadget and Machina Decks.
