Deck Profile: Rey Garza’s Symbols Coelacanth Deck

June 19th, 2010

Rey Garza is no stranger to the tournament scene. He’s a frequent judge at championship-level events, but this time, he’s taking a break to play. Garza entered today’s tournament with his Symbols Coelacanth Deck – a cool Deck based around using the effect of Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth to swarm the field with Fish and win.

The goal of Garza’s Deck is simple – dump Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth to the Graveyard, then revive it or copy its effect to swarm the field with Fish and win the Duel. Garza uses Foolish Burial as well as the effects of Nimble Sunfish and Genex Undine to send Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth from his Deck to his Graveyard. Then, he uses Symbols of Duty and Call of the Haunted to revive it from the Graveyard, or Phantom of Chaos to copy its effect for the turn. The effect of Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth allows Garza to discard a card from his hand to Special Summon as many Level 4 or lower Fish-Type monsters from his Deck as possible. By Special Summoning 2 copies of 7 Colored Fish and 2 copies of Royal Swamp Eel from his Deck with his Coelacanth, Garza can Tune each 7 Colored Fish to a Royal Swamp Eel and Synchro Summon 2 Level 8 monsters. The Coelacanth can also be used to Special Summon other combinations of monsters.

For example, Garza’s Coelacanth can Special Summon 2 copies of 7 Colored Fish, an Oyster Meister, and a Fishborg Blaster from his Deck. Then, he can Tune his 2 copies of 7 Colored Fish to Fishborg Blaster in order to quickly Synchro Summon Mist Wurm and return 3 cards to his opponent’s hand. Since Oyster Meister is a Level 3 Fish-Type monster, Garza can then discard a card from his hand to Special Summon Fishborg Blaster back from his Graveyard. Then he can Tune the Blaster to the Oyster Meister to Synchro Summon Armory Arm. He’ll even get an Oyster Token from the effect of Oyster Meister when he does it.

He can also Special Summon Nimble Sunfish, 7 Colored Fish, and 2 copies of Royal Swamp Eel from his Deck with the Coelacanth. This enables him to Tune the Sunfish to a Swamp Eel to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and Tune the 7 Colored Fish to a Royal Swamp Eel to Synchro Summon a Level 8 Synchro Monster like Red Dragon Archfiend. Using Brionac’s effect to clear the opponent’s field can lead the way for some direct attacks that may end a Duel.

Garza is also running 3 copies of Pot of Avarice to draw through his Deck. With so many quick Synchro Summons, Garza can quickly load up his Graveyard with monsters and use Pot of Avarice to draw more cards. He can also recycle copies of 7 Colored Fish and Royal Swamp Eel to reuse the Coelacanth’s effect to bring out 2 Level 8 Synchro Monsters a second time in the Duel. Garza is also playing 3 copies of Moray of Greed to draw out the key cards that make his combo work and send back the copies of Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth he doesn’t want to draw. Fish Depth Charge also lets Garza speed through his Deck, while Tributing weak monsters like Fishborg Blaster or Oyster Meister to destroy his opponent’s key cards.

With 6 Normal Monsters in his Deck, Garza can easily activate Symbols of Duty when he draws it. In addition to the 3 copies of 7 Colored Fish in his Deck, he uses 2 copies of Genex Controller. Genex Controller is a Normal Monster that can also be added to his hand with the effect of Genex Undine, making it easy to access. Since Symbols of Duty can be used to revive monsters from either Graveyard, Garza can use it to Tribute a Normal Monster and Special Summon an opponent’s powerful monster, like XX-Saber Gottoms or Archlord Kristya, even if he doesn’t have a Coelacanth in his Graveyard.

Today, Garza will have the advantage of Dueling against several opponents who are unfamiliar with the cards in his Deck or the combos his Deck is capable of. If he plays his cards right, he may pull off some surprising victories over several Duelists.
