Round 6 Feature Match: William Erker vs. David Sanville

June 19th, 2010

Both David Sanville and William Erker are just 2 of several X-Saber Duelists with perfect 5-0 records heading into round 6. A win here will put one of them in a great position for making it into the Top 32.

Erker won the dice roll and chose to go first. He opened up with Book of Moon, Mystical Space Typhoon, XX-Saber Emmersblade, Trap Stun, and 2 copies of X-Saber Airbellum. He Set Emmersblade and Trap Stun before ending his turn.

Sanville Set 1 card to each zone and then activated Gold Sarcophagus to remove Rescue Cat from his Deck! In 2 turns, he’d be able to reclaim it.

Erker drew another copy of XX-Saber Emmersblade next turn. He Set it to the field along with a copy of Mystical Space Typhoon before passing to Sanville.

Sanville Set another monster next turn and then activated a second copy of Gold Sarcophagus! This time, he removed Cold Wave from his Deck.

Erker drew Heavy Storm next turn. He had plenty of Spell and Trap removal, but not much to follow up with. He just Set X-Saber Airbellum, Set Book of Moon, and ended his turn.

Sanville drew a card and then added Rescue Cat from his removed from play pile to his hand in his Standby Phase. He immediately ended his turn, waiting for that Cold Wave from the other Gold Sarcophagus.

Erker drew Call of the Haunted next turn. Then, he Summoned X-Saber Airbellum to the field. Next, he flipped up a face-down X-Saber Airbellum and both of his face-down copies of XX-Saber Emmersblade. Emmersblade attacked Sanville’s Set XX-Saber Darksoul. Next, Erker’s Emmersblade attacked Sanville’s Set Emmersblade, and Sanville Special Summoned X-Saber Pashuul from his Deck in Defense Position thanks to his Emmersblade’s effect. In Main Phase 2, Erker tuned Airbellum with both copies of Emmersblade to Synchro Summon XX-Saber Gottoms. He passed on priority, and Sanville flipped Book of Moon to put Gottoms face-down. Erker Set Call of the Haunted in Main Phase 2 before ending his turn, letting Sanville search his Deck for XX-Saber Faultroll in the End Phase thanks to Darksoul’s effect.

Sanville retrieved Cold Wave in his next Standby Phase. He activated it, and Erker chained Call of the Haunted, targeting the XX-Saber Emmersblade in his Graveyard. Sanville chained D.D. Crow from his hand, removing the Emmersblade from Erker’s Graveyard. Sanville Summoned Rescue Cat next, and Tributed to Special Summon XX-Saber Darksoul and X-Saber Airbellum. Then he Special Summoned 2 copies of XX-Saber Faultroll from his hand. Then, he Tuned Airbellum to Darksoul to Synchro Summon XX-Saber Hyunlei, destroying Erker’s Set Book of Moon, Trap Stun, and Mystical Space Typhoon with Hyunlei’s effect. Sanville next used the effect of XX-Saber Faultroll to Special Summon Darksoul back from his Graveyard and Tuned it to Pashuul in order to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor. Then he Special Summoned X-Saber Airbellum from his Graveyard with the effect of his other Faultroll. In his Battle Phase, Sanville attacked Erker’s face-down XX-Saber Gottoms with Ally of Justice Catastor, losing 400 Life Points. Then Faultroll attacked over X-Saber Airbellum, inflicting 800 points of damage to Erker’s Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Sanville Tributed Faultroll for Gottoms’ effect, getting rid of the last card in Erker’s hand: Heavy Storm. During the End Phase, Sanville searched his Deck for XX-Saber Fulhelmknight and XX-Saber Faultroll with the effects of his Darksouls.

Erker drew Gottoms’ Emergency Call next turn and instantly conceded, unable to Set it due to Cold Wave, and unable to handle Sanville’s swarm of monsters.

Some great draws for Sanville give him an easy first Duel. Both Duelists Side Decked and Erker chose to go first in Duel 2!

David Sanville

Erker opened up Duel 2 with Bottomless Trap Hole, Mystical Space Typhoon, Cold Wave, Sangan, and 2 copies of Trap Stun. He Set Sangan to his Monster Card Zone and Trap Stun to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, ending his turn.

Sanville Set 2 cards to his back row and a monster in his Monster Card Zone before passing right back. Erker drew Solemn Judgment next turn. He Set Mystical Space Typhoon and ended his turn.

Sanville Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight next turn! Then he Flip Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul and Special Summoned XX-Saber Faultroll from his hand. He Tuned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight to Darksoul to Synchro Summon Hyunlei, targeting Erker’s Trap Stun and Mystical Space Typhoon with Hyunlei’s effect. Erker chained Mystical Space Typhoon to target Sanville’s Set Hero’s Rule 2 and then chained Trap Stun. Sanville chained Gottoms’ Emergency Call to the Trap Stun to Special Summon Darksoul and Fulhelmknight from his Graveyard. Then he Tuned Darksoul to Fulhelmknight in order to Synchro Summon Goyo Guardian, and attacked Erker’s face-down Sangan with XX-Saber Fulhelmknight. Sanville Special Summoned Darksoul from his Graveyard with Fulhelmknight’s effect. Then Darksoul, Hyunlei, Goyo, and Faultroll attacked directly, dropping Erker to 400 Life Points. Erker conceded, knowing he’d lose his hand before his next turn, and that Sanville had multiple Darksoul searches coming to him at the End Phase.

David Sanville takes a 2-0 victory over William Erker with X-Sabers, as X-Sabers continue to demonstrate their dominance in the tournament.

Post-Event Analysis!
See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
Erker really needed to play more aggressively in this Match. He went first in Game 1 and Set XX-Saber Emmersblade with Trap Stun, a good opening. But when Sanville did nothing but activate Gold Sarcophagus on the following turn, Erker needed to take that as a clear message that he was Dueling on borrowed time. On Turn 2 he needed to Summon X-Saber Airbellum and start doing some damage, but instead he just Set a second Emmersblade. He didn’t attack on Turn 3, either, so Sanville had all the time he needed to resolve not 1, but 2 copies of Sarcophagus! If your opponent ever places you in that position, take the opportunity to attack.

P.J. Tierney (Duelist from across The Pond)
Once again, just like in Ryan Spicer’s Round 5 Feature Match, we see the strength of the Cold Wave / Rescue Cat combo. Sanville used 2 copies of Gold Sarcophagus to first get Rescue Cat, and then Cold Wave a turn later, and as soon as he used them, there was no way back for Erker. Sanville used Rescue Cat and the monsters it Summoned to bring out XX-Saber Hyunlei, destroying 3 of Erker’s cards, which couldn’t be activated due to Cold Wave. To make things worse, he also Summoned 2 XX-Saber Faultroll that turn, their effects providing enough Synchro material for XX-Saber Gottoms, which emptied Erker’s hand.
