Deck Profile: Adric High’s Knight Wings

July 11th, 2010

Back in February, Adric High took 2nd place at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series in Nashville, Tennessee. Now, he’s back on the tournament scene for this weekend’s World Championship Qualifier, competing against the rest of the nation’s top players. His Deck of choice for this high-level tournament? It’s a combination of Doomcaliber Knight with Blackwings, which he calls Knight Wings!

High’s Main Deck features only DARK monters. He’s running Doomcaliber Knight, a Dark Armed Dragon, and a full Blackwing line-up that enables his Deck to function like most other Decks. But High’s Deck has a much greater ability to control the pace of the Duel than most other Blackwing Decks.

In addition to Icarus Attack and Royal Oppression, High’s threat of Doomcaliber Knights pins down his opponent’s plays and destroys his opponent’s cards before they can cause trouble. He’s also playing Cards for Black Feathers, which allow him to trade some of his spare Blackwings for the chance to draw his destructive cards, or draw out his copies of Black Whirlwind so that he can load up his hand with Blackwings.

One of the coolest plays High’s Deck is capable of involves Deck Devastation Virus, which he Side Decks. At first glance, it looks like Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn, Dark Armed Dragon, and Gorz the Emissary of Darkness are the only monsters High can Tribute to activate its effect. But under closer examination, you can see that almost all of his monsters can be Tributed to activate its effect! In addition to his DARK Synchro monsters with over 2000 ATK, like Blackwing Armed Wing and Blackwing Armor Master, which he can easily Summon thanks to the effects of Blizzard and Vayu, High can discard Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow from his hand to boost any of his Blackwings by 1400 ATK during the Damage Step. Since the ATK boost lasts until the End Phase, even High’s weakest Blackwing, Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor, which jumps to 2200 ATK after being pumped by Kalut, can be Tributed to activate the effect of Deck Devastation Virus later in the Battle Phase or during Main Phase 2.

Deck Devastation Virus will prove to be a powerful card against many of High’s opponents, when he Side Decks it in against the most popular Decks. Not only can it show High his opponent’s hand and Set monsters, it also gets rid of key cards his opponent is holding, including XX-Saber Fulhelmknight, XX-Saber Darksoul, Rescue Cat, Infernity Necromancer, Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, Sonic Bird, Gladiator Beast Hoplomus, Gladiator Beast Retiari, Swap Frog, D.D. Crow, and many more popular cards! Plus, Deck Devastation Virus shows High all of the cards his opponent draws for the next 3 turns and immediately destroys the weakest monsters among them.

High’s Knight Wing Deck is no ordinary Blackwing Deck. He’s added a bunch of cards that he hopes will give him an edge over the competition. Will it be enough for him to improve his 2nd place finish to a World Championship Qualifier victory? We’ll find out by the end of the weekend!
