Round 1 Feature Match: Christian Colon vs. Elijah Martincek

July 10th, 2010

Christian Colon traveled here this weekend from Puerto Rico, and is competing in his first World Championship Qualifier event. He’s running X-Sabers, a popular choice in today’s field.

His opponent is young Elijah Martincek, who’s also playing in his first Worlds-qualifying tournament. Martincek is competing today with a unique Worm Deck with Destiny Board. With the defensive power of Worms, and the ability to fill his Graveyard with Reptiles, he can build towards a win with Spirit Message cards or Evil Dragon Ananta.

Colon opened the day with Thunder King Rai-Oh, and a Set Spell or Trap Card.

Martincek had a hand of Fissure, Belial – Marquis of Darkness, Destiny Board, Magical Mallet, Worm Falco, and Worm Cartaros. He activated Fissure to destroy Thunder King, Set Destiny Board, and Set Cartaros.

Colon drew for his turn and Martincek activated Destiny Board! Colon reeled a moment, then activated Cold Wave, Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight, and attacked Worm Cartaros. Cartaros was destroyed, and its effect got Martincek a copy of Worm Dimikles to his hand from his Deck. Colon ended his turn, and Martincek placed Spirit Message “I” on the field with Destiny Board. If he could hold out for just 3 more turns, he could take 1 of the flashiest wins we’ve seen in a long time.

Martincek drew Magical Mallet next turn, but couldn’t activate it due to Cold Wave. He Set Worm Dimikles.

Colon activated Giant Trunade next turn, sending Destiny Board and Spirit Message “I” back to his opponent’s hand. He Normal Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul, Tuned it to Fulhelmknight, and Synchro Summoned Goyo Guardian, attacking Dimikles to destroy it and take control of it. He Set 2 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and got another Fulhelmknight from his Deck in the End Phase.

Martincek drew another Worm Cartaros, and used Magical Mallet to shuffle Belial, Falco, Spirit Message “I”, and his second Mallet back to his Deck. He drew Worm Erokin, Evil Dragon Ananta, and 2 Worm Barses. He Set Worm Cartaros, Set Destiny Board, and ended.

Colon Summoned XX-Saber Boggart Knight, and used its effect to Special Summon XX-Saber Fulhelmknight. He Tuned Fulhelmknight to Dimikles, Synchro Summoned X-Saber Urbellum, and attacked Cartaros with Goyo Guardian to take control of it. Cartaros’ effect got Worm Hope to Martincek’s hand, searching it from his Deck. Colon attacked with Boggart Knight, Martincek responded with Destiny Board, and Colon Chained Solemn Judgment to negate it. Boggart Knight attacked directly, and X-Saber Urbellum attacked next, sending a card from Martincek’s hand back to the top of his Deck.

Martincek drew that card again next turn, and Normal Summoned Worm Barses. Its effect turned Warm Cartaros to Attack Position, and Barses attacked it to destroy it. In Main Phase 2 he removed all four Worms in his Graveyard to Special Summon Evil Dragon Ananta, trying to protect his Life Points with Ananta’s 2400 ATK, but Colon removed it from the game with Bottomless Trap Hole! It was all over a turn later as Boggart Knight and Goyo Guardian made direct attacks.

Elija Martincek activates Destiny Board and starts to add Spirit Messages to his field, but Giant Trunade and Solemn Judgment shut him down. Christian Colon takes the first Duel with X-Sabers! After some brief Side Decking we started our second Duel.

Martincek opened with a hand of 3 Worm Dimikles, Worm Falco, Scrubbed Raid, and Magical Mallet. He activated Mallet to shuffle back everything but Scrubbed Raid, and drew Crature Swap, Fissure, Worm Erokin, and Belial – Marquis of Darkness. He Set Scrubbed Raid, Set Swap, and ended.

Colon Summoned Rescue Cat. He sent it to the Graveyard to Special Summon X-Saber Airbellum and XX-Saber Darksoul from his Deck, then Special Summoned XX-Saber Faultroll. He Summoned a second Faultroll next, Tuned his low-level monsters for XX-Saber Hyunlei, and destroyed Creature Swap and Scrubbed Raid with her effect. He Special Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul and X-Saber Airbellum with his 2 Faultrolls, attacked with Airbellum, and Airbellum’s effect made Martincek discard Worm Erokin. Direct attacks from Hyunlei and the 2 Faultrolls then ended the Match.

Christian Colon ends the second Duel with a huge hand featuring double Faultroll, and moves on to Round 2 with a 1-0 record!

Post-Event Analysis!
See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
Martincek could have used a little more defense to stop big direct attacks like the ones that ended Duel 2. The problem is that defensive traps like Starlight Road can block Martincek from placing Spirit Messages. But Battle Fader would be a good card for him to play.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Evil Dragon Ananta is a powerful card that many Duelists aren’t even aware exists. It can easily be Special Summoned just by removing any number of Reptile-Type monsters from your field and Graveyard. Then, it can destroy a card on the field during each of your End Phases! Martincek used Evil Dragon Ananta in his Deck, and if he had been able to make a bigger play with it, he may have been able to turn the first Duel around.
