Quarterfinal Feature Match: Lazaro Bellido VS Kareem O’Brien

September 5th, 2010

Kareem O’Brien is here today running Infernities. This is his first big tournament showings and he’s up against Lazaro Bellido, a former National and Shonen Jump Championship Tournament Champion who is here today using X-Sabers. Both players here are from the Toronto area and have played each other multiple times in the past. Will O’Brien be able to stand up to Bellido or will he fall short of the goal line?

The dice roll was won by Bellido who decided to go first.

Bellido started by Setting three Spell or Trap Cards and a monster.

O’Brien’s opening hand was Armageddon Knight, Reinforcement of the Army, Infernity Mirage, Infernity Archfiend, and Call of the Haunted.  He drew Bottomless Trap Hole during his Draw Phase and thought for a moment before Summoning Armageddon Knight, whose effect activated and sent Stygian Street Patrol from his Deck to the Graveyard. He then Set Call of the Haunted and Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Bellido drew for his turn and summoned X-Saber Airbellum. O’Brien responded with Bottomless Trap Hole but Bellido chained Trap Stun to negate its effect! Bellido flipped his face down XX-Saber Emmersblade and attacked Armageddon Knight with it. Its effect activated and Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul. He attacked over Armageddon Knight with X-Saber Airbellum and in Main Phase 2 Synchro Summoned XXSaber Hyunlei (3+3=6) letting him destroy O’Brien’s remaining Trap Card. Bellido added XX-Saber Faultroll to his hand in his End Phase.

O’Brien drew Trap Stun for his turn. He activated Reinforcement of the Army and added Dark Grepher from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Dark Grepher and activated its effect, discarding Infernity Archfiend and sending Infernity Avenger from his Deck to the Graveyard. He then Set his Trap Stun and activated Stygian Street Patrol to Special Summon Infernity Mirage from his hand. He Tributed it to Summon Archfiend and Avenger from his Graveyard. He activated Archfiend and searched for Infernity Launcher. Bellido activated Book of Moon to turn Infernity Avenger face-down. O’Brien passed.

Bellido Normal Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight and then Special Summoned XX-Saber Faultroll, activating its effect to Special Summon X-Saber Airbellum from his Graveyard. After a bit of thinking Bellido Synchro Summoned using Airbellum and Hyunlei to make XX-Saber Gottoms in Defense Position (6+3=9). He activated its effect, Tributing it to discard the Launcher from O’Brien’s hand. Fulhelmknight attacked Avenger and activated its effect to Special Summon XX-Saber Darksoul from his Graveyard. In Main Phase 2 Bellido Synchro Summoned another XX-Saber Hyunlei (3+3=6) and destroyed O’Brien’s Trap Stun. Bellido Set one Spell or Trap Card and ended his turn but forgot to search his Deck for an X-Saber with Darksoul.

O’Brien drew Infernity Necromancer in his Draw Phase, which he then Summoned. Bellido activated Book of Moon in response to flip it face down. Things weren’t looking good for O’Brien.

Bellido drew for his turn and Special Summoned XX-Saber Darksoul with Faultroll’s effect. He then Normal Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight and Synchro Summoned into Goyo Guardian (3+3=6). He attacked with all three of his monsters, destroying all of O’Brien’s monsters and Special Summoning Infernity Archfiend to his field with Goyo Guardian. O’Brien used Avenger’s effect to Special Summon itself, but in Main Phase 2 Bellido activated his face down Mind Control to take control of it and Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon with Infernity Avenger and Infernity Archfiend (4+4=8, Infernity Avenger’s Level became 4 because Infernity Archfiend’s Level is 4).

O’Brien drew to one card in hand and summoned Infernity Mirage which he then Tributed to Special Summon Infernity Archfiend and Infernity Necromancer from his Graveyard. He activated Archfiend’s effect to search Infernity Break to his hand from his Deck, Set it, and then activated Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Infernity Avenger from his Graveyard. He Synchro Summoned Hundred-Eyes Dragon using all three of his monsters (4+3+1=8) and removed from play an Infernity Mirage to copy its effect. He Tributed the Dragon to Special Summon Archfiend and Necromancer. Archfiend activated and O’Brien searched for Infernity Barrier which he then Set. He then activated his Infernity Necromancer to Special Summon Avenger one more time. He once again Synchro Summoned Hundred-Eyes Dragon (4+3+1=8). He then, once again, used its effect to remove an Infernity Mirage from the Graveyard and Special Summon Archfiend and Necromancer. Archfiend got O’Brien yet another Infernity Barrier and Necromancer Special Summoned Avenger. O’Brien then Synchro Summoned a THIRD time with all three of his monsters for Hundred-Eyes Dragon (4+3+1=8). He activated it one more time, summoning Infernity Archfiend by removing Necromancer from his Graveyard. He got another Infernity Barrier from his Deck, Set it, and declared an attack with Hundred-Eyes Dragon but when Bellido flipped Mirror Force, O’Brien conceded.

O’Brien’s comeback turn is stopped cold by Mirror Force, and Bellido takes the first Duel.

Kareem learns that haste makes waste the hard way, running headlong into Mirror Force.
O’Brien decided to go first in Game 2 after some extensive Side Decking and friendly banter.

O’Brien’s opening hand was Infernity Barrier, Mystical Space Typhoon, Book of Moon, Trap Stun, Infernity Break, and Infernity Mirage. He Set 3 Spell or Trap Cards.

Bellido Summoned and attacked directly with X-Saber Airbellum, discarding Infernity Mirage from O’Brien’s hand.  He Set 3 Spell or Trap Cards and ended.

O’Brien drew Infernity Archfiend and activated Mystical Space Typhoon on Bellido’s Dust Tornado, which he chained to target O’Brien’s Set Trap stun, which O’Brien also Chained. O’Brien summoned Infernity Archfiend and attacked but Bellido used Book of Moon to flip Archfiend face-down.

Bellido drew and activated his Set Mind Control but O’Brien Chained Infernity Break, destroying X-Saber Airbellum. Bellido switched Infernity Archfiend Attack Position and Normal Summoned X-Saber Pashuul. O’Brien used Book of Moon on Archfiend and Bellido attacked directly for 100 damage.

O’Brien drew then flipped Archfiend, and attacked Pashuul, dishing out 1700 damage . He Set a Spell or Trap Card.

Bellido drew and summoned XX-Saber Darksoul, He then Synchro Summoned Magical Android using both of his monsters (3+2=5). When Darksoul’s effect activated O’Brien Chained Infernity Barrier. Bellido attacked directly for 2400 damage and ended his turn, gaining 600 Life Points from his Android.

O’Brien drew Mystical Space Typhoon, he Set it and activated Call of the Haunted. He Special Summoned Infernity Archfiend but Bellido sent Effect Veiler to the Graveyard to negate the Archfiend’s effect!

Bellido drew and Summoned Sangan, then attacked with both of his monsters. In the End Phase O’Brien activated Mystical Space Typhoon destroying Bellido’s Set Nobleman of Crossout.

O’Brien drew and after thinking for a moment, offered the handshake.

Bellido chalks up yet another victory. Only 2 more matches remain.

Lazaro Bellido wins his top 8 match 2-0, moving on to the top 4 of YCS Toronto with X-Sabers!

Post-Event Analysis!

See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
A brilliant series of plays saw O’Brien Summon 3 Hundred-Eyes Dragons in a single turn, but he lost it all when he attacked into Mirror Force!  With Infernity Break to destroy Bellido’s XX-Saber Gottoms, and Infernity Barrier to negate Stardust Dragon’s effect, and another Barrier to bat cleanup, all O’Brien had to do was wait until next turn when he could use his Barriers.  Instead, he attacked too early and paid the price.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Even though Infernity Duelists can no longer use 3 copies of Infernity Launcher, they still have plenty of tricks that they can use to overwhelm their opponents. In Duel 1, O’Brien was able to keep copying the effect of Infernity Mirage with his Hundred-Eyes Dragon to repeatedly Summon it to the field a net a free card with the effect of Infernity Archfiend each time. This is exactly the type of combo that Infernity Decks are known for, and with access to cards like Infernity Barrier and Infernity Break, this can be a game-winning combo even without 3 copies of Infernity Launcher in your Deck.
