Round 9 Feature Match: Darryl Huang vs. Jerry Tran
Get ready for our first Scrap mirror match!
One of the big stories of Day 1 is the rise of some successful Scrap Decks! Two Scrap Duelists finished with 7-1 records yesterday, and today they were paired off in Round 9! Both competitors are playing Scraps, but their Decks are vastly different. While Jerry Tran runs a Gravekeeper version with Gravekeeper’s Spy and Gravekeeper’s Descendant, Huang plays a mish-mosh of tech and easy-to-Tribute monsters like Battle Fader, The Tricky, Treeborn Frog, and Sasuke Samurai #2. Get ready!
Huang opened the match with a hand of Monster Reborn, Card Trooper, Sasuke Samurai #2, Scrap Chimera, Cyber Dragon, and Scrap Golem. He Summoned Card Trooper, actviated its effect, and sent Treeborn Frog, Enemy Controller, and Scrap Goblin to his Graveyard.
Tran Set a monster, then Set 2 cards to his back row.
Huang drew Level Eater, then activated Card Trooper to send Mystical Space Typhoon, Scrapyard, and another Scrap Goblin to his Graveyard. Card Trooper attacked into Tran’s face-down Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Tran Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck. Huang Set Level Eater.
Tran destroyed Level Eater next turn by Tributing his Gravekeeper’s Spy to Gravekeeper’s Descendant’s effect, and attacked Card Trooper: Huang drew Dark Hole, and Tran Set a third card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
Huang drew Scrapstorm and Special Summoned his Treeborn Frog. He Tributed the Frog for Scrap Golem, activated its effect with priority to target Scrap Goblin, and Tran responded with Bottomless Trap Hole. Huang Chained Scrapstorm, targeted his Golem, sent Scrap Beast to his Graveyard, drew a card (The Tricky), and destroyed his Golem. He Special Summoned Scrap Goblin in Defense Position. He followed up with Monster Reborn, brought back Golem, and activated its effect again to Special Summon his second Goblin in Defense Position! He Tuned Goblin to Golem and Synchro Summoned Scrap Dragon. He then reduced the Dragon’s Level to Special Summon Level Eater, destroyed his Level Eater and Tran’s Solemn Warning with Scrap Dragon’s effect, and attacked over Descendant for 1300 Battle Damage.
Tran Set a monster.
Huang drew another Golem. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, activated Scrap Dragon’s effect, and destroyed the Frog to destroy Tran’s Trap Stun. He Special Summoned Level Eater, Tributed it for Scrap Golem, and Special Summoned Scrap Beast. He Tuned Goblin to Golem again for another Scrap Dragon! He Special Summoned Level Eater again, destroyed it with the Dragon, and destroyed Tran’s face-down Scrap Beast. Tran had no targets in his Graveyard to return to his hand with Scrap Beast’s effect. He then attacked with Scrap Beast and his first Dragon. When the Dragon attacked, Tran Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and a 2800 ATK Emissary of Darkness Token! In Main Phase 2, Tran discarded Cyber Dragon to Special Summon The Tricky, reduced its Level by Special Summoning Level Eater, and Tuned his now-Level-4 Tricky to Scrap Beast for a third Scrap Dragon! Tran conceded the Duel moments later!
Darryl Huang explodes, starting us off here in Day 2 with a triple Scrap Dragon victory! Both competitors took some time, trying to figure out how to use their Side Decks for this unlikely mirror Match.
Tran started Duel 2 by Setting a monster and 2 cards to his back row.
Huang had a hand of Mystical Space Typhoon, Scrap Goblin, Dark Hole, 2 Scrapstorms, and Scrapyard. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Tran’s Bottomless Trap Hole, and then activated Scrapyard to search Scrap Beast from his Deck. He followed up with Dark Hole to destroy Tran’s Set Gravekeeper’s Spy, then Summoned Scrap Beast to attack for 1600 Battle Damage. He Set Scrapstorm.
Tran Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and activated Giant Trunade: Huang Chained Scrapstorm, targeting his Scrap Beast, sending Scrap Chimera to his Graveyard, drawing Card Trooper, and destroying Scrap Beast to get back the Chimera to his hand. Tran activated Scrapyard to get Scrap Goblin from his Deck. He Summoned the Goblin, Tuned it to Cyber Dragon to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon, and attacked for 2800 Battle Damage. With 2 cards left in hand he Set 1 to his back row.
Huang drew another Scrapyard. He Summoned Chimera, targeted his Scrap Beast, but Tran Chained Divine Wrath. Tran discarded Trap Stun and Chimera’s effect was negated, destroying it and leaving Huang with a cleared field.
Tran hit him for another 2800 Battle Damage next turn with Scrap Dragon.
Huang drew Battle Fader and Set Scrap Goblin.
Tran Summoned Scrap Chimera, Special Summoned Scrap Goblin, and destroyed his Goblin and Huang’s Goblin. Huang got back Chimera, while Tran had nothing to return to his hand. He attacked with Scrap Dragon, but Huang Special Summoned Battle Fader.
Huang drew Monster Reborn! He Summoned Scrap Chimera, brought back Scrap Beast, and Tuned them together for Scrap Dragon. He activated its effect destroying Battle Fader and Tran’s Scrap Dragon. Tran brought back Scrap Goblin with Dragon’s effect. But Huang Special Summoned the Scrap Dragon with Monster Reborn! He Set his Scrapyard, destroying that and Scrap Goblin. He then attacked with both Scrap Dragons to knock Tran down to 2500 Life Points. Huang had 2400 Life Points left, and Set Scrapstorm.
Tran drew to 2 cards, facing down Huang’s 2 Scrap Dragons, Set Scrapstorm, and 1 in-hand card. He Normal Summoned Scrap Chimera, Special Summoned Scrap Goblin, and activated his own Monster Reborn, bringing back Cyber Dragon! He Tuned it to Goblin and Synchro Summoned Colossal Fighter. Neither Duelist had any Warriors in their Graveyard, so Colossal had 2800 ATK. It attacked one of the Dragons, and Huang activated Scrapstorm to target the Dragon. He sent Scrap Golem to his Graveyard, drew Treeborn Frog, and destroyed his Scrap Dragon. Tran then sent Colossal Fighter to attack the remaining Scrap Dragon: when it was destroyed, Huang Special Summoned Goblin in Defense Position.
Huang drew The Tricky, with Card Trooper and Treeborn in hand, plus Scrap Goblin on the field. He Summoned Card Trooper, sending One for One, Cyber Dragon, and another Goblin to the Graveyard. He discarded Treeborn Frog for The Tricky, Tuned it to Scrap Goblin, brought out another Scrap Dragon, and destroyed his Card Trooper and Colossal Fighter. He drew Scrap Beast and attacked Scrap Chimera to drop Huang to 1400 Life Points!
Tran drew a card. He was down to topdecking, and had only the card he’d drawn. He Set it to his back row.
Huang drew another The Tricky, and Special Summoned Treeborn Frog. He destroyed it, destroyed Tran’s face-down Solemn Judgment, and attacked for the win with Scrap Dragon!
Darryl Huang unleashes a grand total of SEVEN Scrap Dragons in just 2 Duels, to take the win and virtually clinch his seat in the Top 32!

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
In the first Duel alone, we saw Huang use Level Eater to draw out Gravekeeper’s Descendant’s ability, Tribute it for Scrap Golem, and destroy it twice to blow away cards with Scrap Dragon’s effect. Level Eater is really powerful in Scraps, so if you’re a Scrap Duelist, try and fit it into your strategy.
Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Huang’s Deck may look rather random at first, but it’s filled with cool combos and great synergy. Battle Fader, Treeborn Frog, and Level Eater help make sure that Huang always has monsters to destroy with Scrap Dragon, while Cyber Dragon and The Tricky allow Huang to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon with ease. Huang’s Level 1 monsters also let him add a monster into the mix to turn a Level 7 Scrap Archfiend play into the much stronger Level 8 Scrap Dragon Summon.
