Top 4 Feature Match: Mark Garcia vs. Pete Navarro

September 26th, 2010

Four Decks remained in this tournament: 2 Blackwings, 1 Volcanic Quickdraw Dandywarrior, and 1 Gemini Deck. This Match would pit Volcanic Quickdraw Duelist Pete Navarro against Blackwing Duelist Mark Garcia. The winner of this Match would move on to the Finals, and clinch their set of the Darklord Prize Cards.

Garcia opened the Match with 2 Icarus Attacks, Deck Devastation Virus, Seven Tools of the Bandit, Book of Moon, and Blackwing – Blizzard the far North. He Set everything but Blizzard and his second Icarus.

Navarro Set a monster.

Garcia drew Monster Reborn and passed.

Navarro Set another monster.

Garcia drew another Deck Devastation Virus. He Set Blizzard.

Navarro Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, targeted 1 of Garcia’s back row cards, and Garcia lost Book of Moon. Navarro sent Pot of Avarice, Card Trooper, and Book of Moon to his Graveyard with Ryko’s effect. Navarro Tributed Ryko and his Set Volcanic Shell to Tribute Set a monster, then paid 500 Life Points to get another Volcanic Shell from his Deck. He activated Charge of the Light Brigade, sending Monster Reborn, Royal Decree, and Enemy Controller from his Deck to his Graveyard to get another Ryko.

Garcia drew Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame. He Summoned Shura, Flip Summoned Blizzard, and Tuned them together to Synchro Summon Blackwing Armed Wing. When Garcia tried to move to his Battle Phase, Navarro activated Effect Veiler to negate Armed Wing’s effect, so Garcia Tributed Armed Wing for Deck Devastation Virus! That revealed that Navarro’s Set monster was Tytannial, and revealed his hand of Pot of Avarice, 2 Volcanic Shells, Dandylion, and Ryko. Navarro lost everything in his hand but Pot of Avarice, but Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens. Garcia used Monster Reborn in Main Phase 2 to Special Summon Armed Wing, then Set another Spell or Trap.

Navarro drew Sangan, lost it to the Virus’ effect, and Garcia destroyed Tytannial and 1 of the 2 Fluff Tokens with Icarus Attack, Tributing his Armed Wing again.

Garcia attacked the remaining Fluff Token with Gale.

Navarro drew and revealed Foolish Burial, then Set a Spell or Trap.

Garcia Summoned Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor, then attacked with both of his Blackwings to drop Navarro to 5400 Life Points.

Navarro drew another Pot of Avarice, revealing it for his last turn of Deck Devastation Virus. He activated Foolish Burial, sent Dandylion to the Graveyard to Summon 2 Fluff Tokens, and ended.

Garcia Set another Spell or Trap, then Tributed Vayu for Icarus Attack, destroying the Fluff Tokens. He removed Vayu and Blackwing Armed Wing for Vayu’s effect, Special Summoned Blackwing Armor Master, and attacked. Navarro had 1600 Life Points left.

Navarro drew for his turn, and Garcia activated Mind Crush, calling Pot of Avarice! He knew Navarro had 2 copies in his hand since he saw them with the Virus, and Navarro conceded.

Deck Devastation Virus strips 5 cards from Navarro’s hand, and lets Garcia know everything he had to do to take a decisive win! Side Decking was lengthy on both sides of the table; the pressure was really on for Navarro.

Navarro started the second Duel with a friendly handshake, then Set a monster and a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Garcia had Blackwing – Bora the Spear, Blackwing – Blizzard the far North, D.D. Crow, 2 Nobleman of Crossout, and Icarus Attack. He Summoned Bora, removed Navarro’s Spore with Nobleman of Crossout, and Set Icarus Attack.

Navarro activated Royal Decree, then Special Summoned Cyber Dragon to attack and destroy Bora. He Set another monster.

Garcia drew Solemn Warning, Normal Summoned Blackwing – Blizzard the far North, and saw its effect negated by Navarro’s Effect Veiler. He removed Debris Dragon from Navarro’s field with Nobleman of Crossout and Set another Spell or Trap.

Navarro ran over Blizzard with Cyber Dragon and Set a monster.

Garcia passed.

Navarro Tributed Dandylion and Cyber Dragon for Tytannial, Princess of Camellias, and Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens.

Garcia passed again, holding Mirror Force, Blackwing – Kalut the Moonshadow, and D.D. Crow. When Navarro activated Monster Reborn to target Garcia’s Bora, Garcia conceded.

A lighting-fast win for Pete Navarro takes us to 1 more Duel! Side Decking and shuffling was quick, both Duelists eager to play Duel 3.

Garcia opened with Blackwing – Bora the Spear, Royal Oppression, D.D. Crow, Dark Armed Dragon, Nobleman of Crossout, and Pot of Duality. He activated Duality to reveal Monster Reborn, Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame, and another Bora, choosing to add Shura to his hand. He Set Oppression.

Navarro discarded Volcanic Shell to try and Special Summon Quickdraw Synchron. Garcia didn’t respond, and Navarro paid 500 Life Points to get another Shell from his Deck. He Normal Summoned Dandylion, Synchro Summoned Junk Destroyer, and now Garcia activated Royal Oppression. He negated Junk Destroyer’s Summon, and when Dandylion’s effect started a new Chain, he negated that too. Navarro Set a card to his back row.

Garcia Summoned Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame and attacked for 1800 Battle Damage.

Navarro paid another 500 Life Points to get his third Volcanic Shell from his Deck. He Normal Summoned Debris Dragon, activated its effect targeting Dandylion, and when Garcia Chained Royal Oppression, he Chained My Body As A Shield. Garcia Chained D.D. Crow to remove the targeted Dandylion. Navarro couldn’t Special Summon it, and Royal Oppression was destroyed.

Garcia attacked Debris Dragon with Shura, but Navarro responded with Book of Moon! Debris Dragon went to Defense Position and Shura slammed into it, dealing Garcia 200 Battle Damage.

Navarro Set a Spell or Trap.

Garcia drew Pot of Duality, activating it to reveal Allure of Darkness, Solemn Warning, and Blackwing – Kalut the Moonshadow. He added Kalut to his hand and ended.

Navarro Set another monster.

Garcia drew and now had Monster Reborn, Dark Hole, Nobleman of Crossout, Bora, Dark Armed Dragon, Sirocco, and Kalut. He Special Summoned Bora, removed Navarro’s Set Volcanic Shell with Nobleman, and attacked with Shura. He powered through Debris Dragon with Shura (thanks to a boost from Kalut), and Shura’s effect Special Summoned Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor from Garcia’s Deck. He attacked for 800 Battle Damage, then 1700 Battle Damage, with Vayu and Bora respectively. In Main Phase 2 he Tuned Bora to Vayu and Synchro Summoned Magical Android. He gained 600 Life Points in his End Phase.

Navarro had only 1200 Life Points left. He activated Dark Hole, Set a monster, and Set another Spell or Trap Card.

Garcia drew Icarus Attack, still holding Dark Armed Dragon, Sirocco, Dark Hole, and Monster Reborn. He Normal Summoned Sirocco, activated Dark Hole, and destroyed his Sirocco and Navarro’s Volcanic Shell. He removed Sirocco and Vayu to Special Summon Blackwing Armed Wing, then used Monster Reborn to bring back his Shura. He revealed Dark Armed Dragon and Navarro surrendered straight away!

Mark Garcia guarantees to win a set of the Darklord Prize Cards, and will Duel for the Championship in the Finals against Angel Flores!

Post-Event Analysis!
See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
Garcia’s Deck Devastation Virus was incredible in this Match.  Not only did it cost Navarro almost his entire hand, it gave Garcia enough information to make him discard 2 more cards later with Mind Crush: it even revealed Navarro’s Set monster.  Deck Devastation was an uncommon choice in this tournament, but as we saw, it was 1 of the big factors that gave Garcia a leg up on the competition.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Deck Devastation Virus was an incredible card for Garcia in this matchup. Quickdraw Decks like Navarro’s run lots of monsters with low ATK, and Deck Devastation Virus destroys them all. As Quickdraw Decks become more popular, expect Blackwing Duelists to respond by using Deck Devastation Virus in their Main Decks.
