Round 10 Feature Match: Pongyue Moua VS Zachary Bishop

October 10th, 2010

Pongyue Moua lost his Round 5 Feature Match against Scraps yesterday, but now he’s back with a 7-2 record using Flamvells and facing off against Zachary Bishop’s LIGHT Gemini Beatdown Deck. Will he be able to redeem himself from yesterday?

Moua opened up with Dark Hole, Book of Moon, Mystical Space Typhoon, Flamvell Firedog, Call of the Haunted, and Super-Nimble Mega Hamster. He Set his Hamster along with Mystical Space Typhoon and Book of Moon before ending his turn.

Bishop activated Pot of Duality to reveal Elemental Hero Neos Alius, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Honest from the top of his Deck. He added Neos Alius to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. He Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and ended his turn, losing a Solemn Warning to Moua’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Moua drew Cyber Dragon next turn. Then he flipped up his Hamster and Special Summoned Ryko from his Deck face-down. He attacked with the Hamster, dropping Bishop down to 6900 Life Points. Moua Set Call of the Haunted and ended his turn.

Bishop activated Nobleman of Extermination next turn and removed Moua’s Call of the Haunted from the game. Then he activated Dark Hole to destroy Moua’s face-up Hamster and face-down Ryko. He Summoned Neos Alius and attacked, but Moua activated his face-down Book of Moon to put Alius face-down.

Moua drew Giant Trunade next turn! He activated it to return Bishop’s back row to his hand, then Special Summoned Cyber Dragon. Next, he Normal Summoned Flamvell Firedog. Flamvell Firedog attacked over the face-down Neos Alius, Special Summoning Flamvell Magician from his Deck with its effect. Then the Magician attacked Bishop directly and Bishop took the damage. Cyber Dragon scored a direct attack next, and Bishop Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness along with an Emisssary of Darkness Token in Defense Position. In Main Phase 2, Moua Tuned his Flamvell Firedog with his Flamvell Magician to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon, and used its effect to destroy his own Cyber Dragon and Bishop’s Gorz.

Bishop used Book of Moon to put Scrap Dragon face-down and then switched his Token into Attack Position. He destroyed Scrap Dragon in battle with his Token. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Moua drew Effect Veiler and passed.

Bishop attacked Moua directly with his Emissary of Darkness Token and passed.

Moua drew Flamvell Magician next turn. He activated Dark Hole to destroy Bishop’s Token. Then he Summoned his Magician and tried to attack directly, but Bishop flipped Hero Blast to destroy it and return a Neos Alius from his Graveyard to his hand.

Bishop Summoned Neos Alius next turn and attacked directly with it.

Moua drew and Set Phoenix Wing Wind Blast but lost it to Bishop’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Bishop Summoned Honest and attacked directly with Honest and Neos Alius. He returned Honest to his hand in Main Phase 2 before ending his turn.

Moua drew Flamvell Firedog on his final turn and Summoned it to the field. He attacked into Alius, but when Bishop dropped Honest from his hand to boost his monster to 3800 ATK, Moua’s 1000 Life Points weren’t enough to save him!

Pongyue Moua will be going first in Duel 2!

Moua opened up with Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, Flamvell Firedog, Flamvell Magician, Giant Trunade, Smashing Ground, and Cyber Dragon. He Set the Hamster and ended his turn.

Bishop Summoned Elemental Hero Stratos! He activated its effect to search his Deck for Elemental Hero Neos Alius and add it to his hand. Then he activated Pot of Duality, revealing Dimensional Prison, Book of Moon, and Hero Blast from the top of his Deck. He added Hero Blast to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Bishop attacked Moua’s face-down Hamster with his Stratos, flipping it face-up and allowing Moua to Special Summon Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter from his Deck. Bishop Set a Spell or Trap before ending.

Moua drew Dark Hole next turn. He flipped Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, destroying the face-down Solemn Warning and sending Necro Gardna, Trap Stun, and Flamvell Archer from the top of his Deck to the Graveyard. Then he Summoned Flamvell Firedog and used it to attack Bishop’s Stratos, destroying it in battle. Moua Special Summoned Flamvell Magician from his Deck with his Firedog’s effect, and then attacked directly with his Magician and Ryko, dropping Bishop down to 6300 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Moua Tuned his Magician with his Hamster to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon. Play was to Bishop.

Bishop Summoned Neos Alius and attacked over Moua’s Ryko, dropping him down to 6300 Life Points. Then he Set 3 Spell or Trap Cards and ended his turn.

Moua drew Torrential Tribute next turn. He activated Giant Trunade to send all 3 of Bishop’s Set cards to his hand. Then he used Smashing Ground to destroy Neos Alius. He Summoned Flamvell Magician next and attacked directly with Stardust Dragon, Flamvell Firedog, and Flamvell Magician. Bishop dropped down to 500 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Moua Tuned his Firedog with his Magician to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. He Set Torrential Tribute to his back row and ended his turn.

Bishop conceded on his next turn, unable to defeat Stardust Dragon and Scrap Dragon.

The Match pressed on to a third Duel!

Bishop began by Setting 2 Spell or Trap Cards and Summoning Doomcaliber Knight.

Moua opened up with Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, Bottomless Trap Hole, Flamvell Baby, 2 copies of Mystical Space Typhoon, and Flamvell Firedog. He used both copies of Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Bishop’s face-down Mystical Space Typhoon and Magic Cylinder. Then he Summoned Flamvell Firedog and sent Flamvell Baby from his hand to his Graveyard to try to boost its ATK, but Doomcaliber Knight Tributed itself to negate the Baby’s effect. Flamvell Firedog attacked Bishop directly for 1900 points of damage. Moua Set Bottomless Trap Hole and passed.

Bishop Summoned Doomcaliber Knight next turn but lost it to Moua’s Bottomless Trap Hole. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.

Moua drew Trap Stun next turn. He attacked directly with his Firedog, then Set Ryko and Trap Stun.

Bishop Summoned Neos Alius next turn and flipped Torrential Tribute, but Moua negated it with Trap Stun. Neos Alius rammed into Flamvell Firedog, destroying both of them.

Moua drew and Summoned Flamvell Magician next turn. He attacked directly and passed.

Bishop Summoned Neos Alius and used it to attack over Moua’s Flamvell Magician.

Moua drew Smashing Ground next turn and used it to destroy Neos Alius.

Bishop Summoned Banisher of the Radiance and attacked Moua’s Set Ryko. Ryko’s effect activated, destroying Banisher and sending Bottomless Trap Hole, Charge of the Light Brigade, and Ryko from the top of his Deck to the Graveyard. Bishop activated Monster Reborn next and revived Neos Alius from his Graveyard.

Moua had no cards in his hand or on the field. He was on total topdeck. He drew Card Trooper and boosted it to 1900 ATK by sending the top 3 cards from his Deck to his Graveyard, none of which were Flamvell monsters. He attacked Neos Alius with his Card Trooper, but Bishop dropped Honest from his hand to boost his Neos Alius’s ATK. Moua drew Rekindling off of Card Trooper’s effect when it hit the Graveyard.

Bishop attacked directly with Neos Alius on his next turn and then Set a Spell or Trap.

Moua drew Super-Nimble Mega Hamster next turn and then activated Rekindling! He Special Summoned Flamvell Firedog, Flamvell Magician, and Flamvell Baby from his Graveyard! Bishop flipped Gemini Spark to Tribute his Neos Alius and destroy the Firedog before Moua could use it in a Synchro Summon. But Moua had a non-Tuner in his hand! He Summoned Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, Tuned it with Flamvell Magician, and Synchro Summoned Scrap Dragon! Scrap Dragon’s 2800 ATK was just enough to take out Bishop’s remaining Life Points!

Pongyue Moua pilots his Flamvell Deck to an 8-2 finish by beating Zachary Bishop’s Gemini Beatdown Deck!  “Good luck,” Bishop wished him. “I hope you win!”

Post-Event Analysis!
See what our panel of experts had to say about this Duel after the event was over.

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
Sometimes, what you pick with Pot of Duality can give your opponent a lot of information.  For instance, when Bishop chose to take Neos Alius instead of Honest on turn 1, Moua could’ve made the following guesses: Bishop didn’t have a strong attacker, he already had Honest, or he had at least 1 Hero Blast.  Later, we saw that all 3 seemed to be true.  Moua could’ve used this information, Synchro Summoning Colossal Fighter instead of Scrap Dragon later in the Duel.  If he had, he would have outplayed both Honest and Bishop’s Book of Moon later on, since Colossal can revive itself if it’s destroyed in battle.

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Rekindling can turn a Duel around in an instant. Moua was able to snag a victory when he had no cards, just by drawing Rekindling! Since Rekindling can flood the field with monsters in the Graveyard, it’s frequently the only card a Flamvell Duelist will need in order to win. When facing Flamvell Decks, you should always be wary of the possibility that your opponent has Rekindling
