Round 8 Feature Match: Marshaun Young vs. Christopher Evans

October 9th, 2010

Marshaun Young is currently 6-1 with the Fairy Chaos Deck we profiled at the start of the tournament. His opponent, Christopher Evans, has a 6-1 record with Infernities. Young’s 3 copies of Royal Decree may make this a tough matchup for Evans, but if Evans can draw the right cards early on, he may be able to defeat Young before he gets his Deck up-and-running. A victory here will put one of these Duelists into a great position to make the Top 32 after the 2 rounds of swiss tomorrow morning.

Evans started things off by Setting 3 cards to his back row and activating Gold Sarcophagus. He removed Giant Trunade from his Deck with its effect so that he’d be able to reclaim it 2 turns later.

Young opened up with 2 copies of Caius the Shadow Monarch, Sangan, Dimensional Alchemist, My Body as a Shield, and Skelengel. He Summoned Sangan to the field and attacked directly, dropping Evans down to 7000 Life Points.

Evans activated Infernity Inferno next turn. He discarded Solemn Judgment and Infernity Break to send Infernity Archfiend and Infernity Avenger from his Deck to his Graveyard. Then he Summoned Infernity Necromancer with no cards left in his hand. It switched into Defense Position and then Evans activated its effect to Special Summon Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He used his Archfiend’s effect to search his Deck for Infernity Launcher and add it to his hand. Evans Set the Launcher and then attacked Young’s Sangan with his Archfiend. Young used Sangan’s effect to search his Deck for Honest and add it to his hand.

Young drew Plaguespreader Zombie next turn. He Summoned Dimensional Alchemist and then activated its effect to remove Royal Decree from the top of his Deck and boost the Alchemist up to 1800 ATK. He Set My Body as a Shield before ending his turn.

Evans retrieved and played Giant Trunade next turn to return all Spell and Trap Cards to their owners’ hands. Then he his Spell and Trap Cards again and activated his Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Infernity Avenger from his Graveyard. He Tuned Avenger, Necromancer, and Archfiend together to Synchro Summon Infernity Doom Dragon, and then activated its effect to destroy Dimensional Alchemist and inflict 650 points of damage to Young’s Life Points. Next, Evans flipped up his Infernity Launcher and sent it to the Graveyard to Special Summon Infernity Necromancer and Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard. He searched his Deck for Infernity Mirage with Archfiend’s effect before Normal Summoning it to the field. Then he used Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Avenger from his Graveyard. He Tuned Avenger with Necromancer and Archfiend too Synchro Summon Dark End Dragon. Then he Tributed his Mirage to Special Summon Infernity Archfiend and Infernity Necromancer back from the Graveyard. He used Archfiend’s effect to search his Deck for a copy of Infernity Barrier to add to his hand. He Set it, then used Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Avenger back from the Graveyard. Then he Tuned Avenger, Archfiend, and Necromancer together to Synchro Summon Hundred-Eyes Dragon. He removed Infernity Mirage from his Graveyard with the effect of Hundred-Eyes Dragon in order to copy its effect, then Tributed the Dragon to Special Summon Infernity Necromancer and Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard. He used Archfiend’s effect to search his Deck for Infernity Break, added it to his hand, and then Set it. Next, he activated his Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Infernity Avenger back from the Graveyard and Synchro Summon Hundred-Eyes Dragon by Tuning Avenger, Archfiend, and Necromancer together. Then he removed Infernity Necromancer from his Graveyard to copy its effect with Hundred-Eyes Dragon. He activated its effect to Special Summoned Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard in Attack Position, declining to activate the Archfiend’s effect. Hundred-Eyes Dragon, Dark End Dragon, and Infernity Archfiend attacked directly, dropping Young down to 0 Life Points!

Christopher Evans wins the first Duel with some standard Infernity combos! Marshaun Young will be starting off Duel 2.

Then he Tuned Marshmallon with Plaguespreader Zombie and Synchro Summoned Ally of Justice Catastor (3+2=5). But Evans negated the Summon by sending Thunder King Rai-Oh to the Graveyard. Next, Young removed Marshmallon and Catastor from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer. He activated its effect to try to remove Dark Grepher from the game. Evans chained Bottomless Trap Hole, but Young chained My Body as a Shield and paid 1500 Life Points to protect his Sorcerer. Grepher was removed from the game by Sorcerer’s effect, and Chaos Sorcerer was safe!

Evans drew and passed.

Young drew Royal Decree and then attacked with Chaos Sorcerer. Evans flipped Mirror Force and Chaos Sorcerer was destroyed. Young Set Royal Decree and then ended his turn.

Evans Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn. He attacked directly, dropping Young to 4400 Life Points.

Young drew Skelengel and Set it.

Evans attacked the Set Skelengel, destroying it in battle and allowing Young to draw Cyber Dragon from his Deck.

Young drew Pot of Duality next turn. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and Evans negated the Summon by Tributing Rai-Oh.

Evans activated Trap Stun next turn. Young didn’t Chain anything to it, but when Evans tried to Chain Infernity Inferno, Young flipped Royal Decree to shut down his play! Evans Set a card to each zone and passed.

Young drew Book of Moon and then flipped his face-down Nobleman of Crossout to remove Evans’s Set Infernity Necromancer from the game. Then he activated Pot of Duality, revealing Chaos Sorcerer, My Body as a Shield, and Cold Wave from the top of his Deck. He added Chaos Sorcerer to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. He Set Book of Moon and Nobleman of Crossout before ending his turn.

On his next turn, Young activated Nobleman of Crossout to remove Evans’s face-down Infernity Mirage from the game and then Summoned Dimensional Alchemist to the field. Alchemist and Sorcerer attacked directly, ending the Duel despite Evans’s numerous Set Spell and Trap Cards!

Then he Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and Tuned his Avenger with Stygian Street Patrol to Synchro Summon Stygian Sergeants (4+1=5). He removed Stygian Street Patrol from his Graveyard next, in order to Special Summon Infernity Necromancer from his hand. He used Necromancer’s effect to Special Summon Avenger, then flipped Infernity Launcher and sent it to the Graveyard to Special Summon 2 copies of Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard. One of their effects resolved, grabbing Evans a copy of Infernity Barrier from his Deck. He Set the Barrier and then Tuned Infernity Archfiend, Infernity Necromancer, and Infernity Avenger together to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon (4+3+1=8). Young used Effect Veiler to negate Stardust Dragon at the end of his Main Phase, but Evans attacked Snowman Eater with his Sergeants anyway. Snowman Eater destroyed it with its effect and was destroyed by the Sergeants’s attack. Then Infernity Archfiend attacked Young’s face-down Honest. Next, Stardust Dragon attacked and destroyed Honest.

Young drew Dark Hole next turn. He Set it and ended his turn, unable to resolve it with Stardust Dragon on the field. Post-Event Analysis!

Jason Grabher-Meyer (The Old Man of Dueling)
Always order your moves to play around a potential Torrential Tribute.  In Duel 3, we saw Young Special Summon Cyber Dragon, attack Infernity Archfiend, Set Snowman Eater, and then use Monster Reborn to Special Summon his opponent’s Archfiend.  Keeping the Archfiend out of Evans’ Graveyard was a good idea, but Evans had Torrential Tribute, and when he flipped it Young lost 3 cards.  If he’d activated Monster Reborn before Setting Snowman Eater, Evans would’ve had to activate Torrential in response to the Archfiend being Summoned, and Young would’ve kept his Snowman.  Always think about Torrential Tribute

Michael Kohanim (2009 World Championship Competitor)
Royal Decree is a great card to use to defeat Infernity Decks, since Infernity Duelists heavily rely on their Trap Cards to set up combos and protect themselves. Young was able to seal the second Duel by flipping Royal Decree face-up and shutting down all of Evans’s face-down Traps. But Young could have put his Royal Decree to even better use if he declined to attack with his Chaos Sorcerer on the turn that he Set his Decree. Young should have suspected that one of the cards in Evans’s back row was a Trap Card that would take down Chaos Sorcerer when it attacked, since he hadn’t previously attacked in that Duel, and those back rows were Set since Evans’s first turn. By declining to attack, Young could have protected his Sorcerer from Mirror Force by activating Royal Decree on his next turn.
