Final Round Feature Match: Sean McCabe vs. Frazier Smith

November 21st, 2010

Two teammates and friends with the exact same Decks were now Dueling for the title of Champion. We already knew the winning Deck. Now, we just needed a winning Duelist.

“Could you imagine this would be us?” asked McCabe, shuffling his Deck.

Smith laughed: “Same Deck, same Extra Deck, same Side Deck?” McCabe grinned, as Smith gave a bit of explanation: “We were talking online for 2 weeks making this Deck. We’re staying in the same hotel room. Last night he was like ‘you know, we could play eacother tomorrow. You want to practice the mirror Match?’ And I was like, ‘No way! Let’s get some sleep!’” McCabe laughed again.

Smith started the Match with Pot of Duality, revealing Royal Tribute, Dimensional Prison, and Solemn Judgment. He took Judgment, then Set 4 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and a monster.

McCabe had Pot of Duality, Gravekeeper’s Spy, Book of Moon, Starlight Road, Necrovalley, and Royal Tribute. Duality let him choose between Gravekeeper’s Spy, Book of Moon, and Dimensional Prison, and he took Spy. He Set every back row card he had, Set Spy, and ended.

Smith used another Duality, this time revealing Royal Tribute, Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, and Gravekeeper’s Stele. He chose to add Recruiter to his hand, then Set another monster.

McCabe flipped Spy, but Smith negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment. McCabe Set Bottomless Trap Hole, then activated Necrovalley, Set another Spy, and flipped Royal Tribute, revealing and discarding Smith’s Gravekeeper’s Assailant.

Smith Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, McCabe tried to remove it with Bottomless, but Smith saved it by Chaining Book of Moon!

McCabe Flip Summoned Spy next turn, Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant, and opted not to activate its effect. Smith responded with Book of Moon, turning Descendant face-down, and McCabe Set his last card in his back row.

Smith Flip Summoned Recruiter again, and this time McCabe flipped it face-down with Book of Moon. Smith Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Commandant, Flip Summoned Assailant, and attacked into McCabe’s face-down Descendant to destroy it. Assailant then attacked Spy, which McCabe flipped with Book of Moon. When it flipped back up, the Spy got him Gravekeeper’s Descendant.

McCabe drew another Royal Tribute, but Smith had no hand to discard. McCabe flipped Spy to Attack Position, attacked, and Tributed Spy to destroy Commandant.

Smith Set a monster, turned Recruiter to Attack Position, and attacked with Assailant to destroy Descendant. Recruiter made a direct attack.

McCabe drew and Set Mirror Force. Smith Summoned a second Recruiter next turn, attacked, and when McCabe flipped Mirror Force Smith Chained Starlight Road! McCabe immediately conceded!

Frazier Smith takes the first Duel, now just a single win away from winning the entire tournament! Side Deck use was quick and methodical on both sides of the table: both Duelists seemed to know exactly what they were doing in this matchup.

“All those times you beat me at those locals McCabe,” grinned Smith, friendly. “There’s just a time when you have to decide to become a Champion!”

McCabe had Cyber Dragon, Smashing Ground, Dark Hole, Gravekeeper’s Descendant, Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Solemn Warning. He Set Spy and Warning.

Smith blasted the Warning with Mystical Space Typhoon, then activated Pot of Duality, taking Solemn Warning over Mirror Force and Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Nobleman of Crossout removed McCabe’s Gravekeeper’s Spy from the field, and all Duelists lost a total of 3 Spies! Smith Summoned Commandant, attacked for 1600 Battle Damage, and Set 2 of his 3 remaining cards to his back row.

McCabe Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked into Dimensional Prison. He used Book of Moon to save his Cyber Dragon.

Smith had another Duality, this one getting him Bottomless Trap Hole over Smashing Ground and Cyber Dragon.

McCabe Flip Summoned Cyber Dragon, lost it to Bottomless Trap Hole, and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant. He destroyed Commandant with Smashing Ground and attacked for 1500 Battle Damage. He Set Bottomless.

When Smith Summoned another Commandant next turn, McCabe stopped it with Bottomless Trap Hole.

“This is a crazy game we’re playing right here,” commented Smith.

“I’m nervous,” confessed McCabe.

“I think we even Sided the same cards.”

Finals-McCabe

The last Duel started with a handshake between friends! Smith used Pot of Duality, revealing 2 Cyber Dragons and Gravekeeper’s Spy; Smith took Spy. He activated Allure of Darkness, drew 2 cards, and removed Gravekeeper’s Assailant to complete Allure’s effect. He Set a monster, Set 3 cards to his back row, and ended.

McCabe had Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, Gravekeeper’s Descendant, Gravekeeper’s Spy, Solemn Judgment, Smashing Ground, and Bottomless Trap Hole. He Set 2 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and Set a monster, losing Bottomless Trap Hole to Mystical Space Typhoon in his End phase.

Smith Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy. McCabe responded with Solemn Judgment, but Smith Chained his own Judgment! The Flip Summon went through, Spy’s effect activated, and Smith Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck with the Spy’s effect. He Tributed Spy to destroy McCabe’s Recruiter (McCabe got Commandant as a result), Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Commandant, and attacked to reduce McCabe to 900 Life Points.

McCabe drew Gravekeeper’s Commandant. He activated Smashing Ground to destroy Smith’s Commandant, then Set a monster and a Spell or Trap.

Smith activated Gravekeeper’s Stele, and took back Spy and Commandant. When he Summoned the Commandant McCabe immediately conceded.
