Round 6 Feature Match: James Daniel vs. Brooks Melacon

November 20th, 2010

Brooks Melacon is currently 4-1 with his innovative Quickdraw Deck. His opponent, James Daniel, is running Macro Monarchs, with the brand-new Different Dimension Ground from Starstrike Blast in his Side Deck. Daniel’s Dimensional Fissure and Macrocosmos may make this a tough Match for Melacon, who relies on his Graveyard and counts on monster effects that trigger there.

Daniel started things off by Setting 3 cards to his back row and Summoning D.D. Survivor in Attack Position.

Melacon opened up with Dandylion, Foolish Burial, Torrential Tribute, Book of Moon, and 2 copies of Caius the Shadow Monarch. He activated Foolish Burial, and Daniel Chained Macrocosmos! Melacon removed Ryko from his Deck with Foolish Burial. He Set 2 cards to his back row and ended his turn, clearly in trouble already.

Daniel Set 1 card to his back row and then attacked with his Survivor. Melacon blocked the attack by putting Survivor face-down with Book of Moon. Daniel Set a monster and passed.

Melacon Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter next turn and passed right back to Daniel.

Daniel activated Mystical Space Typhoon next turn, destroying Melacon’s face-down Torrential Tribute. Then he activated Reinforcement of the Army to search his Deck for D.D. Survivor and add it to his hand. He Summoned the Survivor to the field, then flipped his Neo-Spacian Grand Mole face-up. Grand Mole attacked Ryko, bouncing both monsters back to their owners’ hands with Grand Mole’s effect. Next, both copies of D.D. Survivor attacked Melacon directly, dropping him down to 4400 Life Points.

Melacon drew Pot of Duality next turn. He activated it, revealing Pot of Duality, Pot of Avarice, and Tytannial, Princess of Camellias from the top of his Deck. He added Pot of Duality to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Melacon Set Pot of Duality and Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, ending his turn.

Daniel Summoned Grand Mole back to the field next turn, and once again used it to return Ryko to Melacon’s hand. Then he attacked directly with both copies of D.D. Survivor, dropping Melacon down to 800 Life Points.

When Melacon drew Pot of Avarice next turn, it was all over. He had no way of dealing with Daniel’s Survivors and no Graveyard to resort to. Melacon scooped up his cards and the Match proceeded to Duel 2.

An early Macrocosmos makes Duel 1 unworkable for Brooks Melacon, allowing James Daniel to take a quick victory!

Melacon opened up Duel 2 with Sangan, Quickdraw Synchron, Debris Dragon, Book of Moon, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Dark Hole. He Set Sangan in his Monster Card Zone, along with Mystical Space Typhoon and Book of Moon in his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Daniel activated Giant Trunade to return Melacon’s Set cards to his hand. Then he Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and Tributed it to Summon Raiza the Storm Monarch. He activated Raiza’s effect to spin Sangan to the top of Melacon’s Deck and lock up Melacon’s next draw. He attacked directly with Raiza and Set Book of Moon before ending his turn.

Melacon used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Daniel’s Set Book of Moon, then activated Dark Hole to destroy Raiza. Then he Summoned Sangan and attacked directly, dropping Daniel down to 7000 Life Points. He Set Book of Moon in Main Phase 2 and passed.

Daniel Set a card to each zone and ended his turn.

Melacon attacked Daniel’s face-down monster with Sangan. It was Morphing Jar! Both players discarded their hands and drew 5 new cards. In Main Phase 2, Melacon used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Daniel’s Set Dark Hole. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Daniel activated Dimensional Fissure next turn! He Summoned D.D. Survivor and attacked Sangan, but Melacon used Book of Moon to block the attack and put D.D. Survivor face-down. By discarding Grand Mole from his hand, Daniel activated Lightning Vortex in Main Phase 2, destroying Sangan and removing it from the game.

Melacon passed his next turn without making a play.

Daniel Set a card to his back row before flipping his D.D. Survivor face-up. He attacked directly with D.D. Survivor, and Melacon took the hit.

Melacon Set a card to his back row and passed.

Daniel attacked directly with D.D. Survivor again on his next turn.

Melacon drew Solemn Warning next turn. He Set it, where it joined Royal Decree, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Torrential Tribute in his Spell and Trap Card Zone. He ended his turn with Quickdraw Synchron, Caius the Shadow Monarch, and another copy of Royal Decree in his hand.

Daniel attacked directly with D.D. Survivor next turn, dropping Melacon down to 200 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Daniel Tributed his D.D. Survivor to Summon Caius the Shadow Monarch, and activated its effect to have Caius target itself. Melacon Chained Bottomless Trap Hole to try to remove Caius from the game so he could avoid the 1000 points of damage, but Melacon used Solemn Judgment to negate it and make sure Caius’s effect went through.

James Daniel takes a dominating 2-0 victory over Brooks Melacon and advances 5-1 in the tournament thanks to Macrocosmos and Dimensional Fissure!
