Round 11 Feature Match: Brandon Ogbonna vs. Honorable Jarel Winston
This is the final Swiss pair round of YCS Dallas! Both of these competitors hold 9-1 records, so the winner of this Match will score a guaranteed seat in the Top 32. Honorable Jarel Winston hails from New York City, and Brandon Ogbonna is from right here in Dallas. Winston is one of many Six Samurai Duelists still in contention, but Ogbonna is playing Lightsworn – a rare sight here in Day 2. Would the consistency of Samurais pay off, or would Ogbonna score an explosive win? Let’s find out!
Winston opened the Match with a hand of Shien’s Smoke Signal, Solemn Warning, Dark Hole, Book of Moon, Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki, and Kagemusha of the Six Samurai. He Normal Summonde Kageki; Special Summoned Kagemusha; and Synchro Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En. He Set Warning and Book, a very solid opening.
Ogbonna Normal Summoned Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress, and Winston turned her face-down with Book of Moon.
Winston drew Hand of the Six Samurai. He activated Smoke Signal to search another Kagemusha from his Deck; Set it; and attacked to destroy Lyla with Shi En.
Ogbonna tried to Normal Summon Thunder King Rai-Oh, but Winston negated the Summon with Solemn Warning.
Winston drew Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan. He shuffled his hand a moment, then Normal Summoned Hand; Special Summoned Kizan; and Flip Summoned Kagemusha. He attacked with all 4 monsters from smallest to largest, and Ogbonna dropped to 1400 Life Points. Ogbonna Special Summoned Gorz off Shi En’s attack, and Winston Tributed Kagemusha and Hand to destroy both Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and its Emissary of Darkness Token. Winston had 1 card left in hand, with Shi En and Kizan on the field.
Ogbonna drew to 5 cards in hand, and Summoned Card Trooper to send Jain, Lightsworn Paladin, Lyla, and Gold Sarcophagus to his Graveyard, boosting Trooper’s ATK to 1900. He tried to activate Pot of Avarice, but Winston negated it with Shi En’s effect. Ogbonna continued though, Special Summoning Thunder King with Monster Reborn! Card Trooper took out Kizan, and Thunder King powered over Shi En thanks to Honest!
But Winston drew Shien’s Smoke Signal! Dark Hole cleared the field; Winston got Legendary Six Samurai – Mizuho with Smoke Signal; and he Summoned her to attack for the win!
Honorable Jarel Winston takes early control of the first Duel with Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En, and when his back is finally against the wall, he draws the right card to combo with the Dark Hole he’d saved from turn 1! He was now just a single win away from a guaranteed Top 32, but Ogbonna’s explosive Lightsworn strategy could see him winning 2 Duels straight.
Ogbonna Set a monster, and Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone to Start Duel 2.
Winston opened with a stunning hand: Gateway of the Six, Six Samurai United, Monster Reborn, Shien’s Smoke Signal, Kagemusha of the Six Samurai, and Bottomless Trap Hole. He activated Gateway, United, and got Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki from his Deck with Smoke Signal. He Normal Summoned it; Special Summoned Kagemusha, and Synchro Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En! That left him with 6 Bushido Counters on Gateway, and 2 on United. He removed the 2 from United plus 2 from Gateway for the Gateway’s effect, getting Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan from his Deck, Special Summoning it. He removed 4 more from Gateway to get Grandmaster. He removed 2 Counters from each Spell to get another Kizan, and Special Summoned that as well. He now had 4 Counters on Gateway and 1 on United. Monster Reborn brought back Kagemusha, leaving him with 6 Counters on Gateway and 2 on United. Winston Tuned Kagemua to a Kizan for Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Winston removed 4 Counters from Gateway to get his last Kizan. He Special Summoned it, drew 2 cards with United (Mystical Space Typhoon and Legendary Six Samurai Mizuho), and then removed the remaining Counters from Gateway to take back Kizan from his Graveyard. He discarded Mizuho to bounce Ogbonna’s monster with Brionac, then attacked with Kizan: “You got it,” smiled Ogbonna, conceding the Duel.
Honorable Jarel Winston overcomes Brandon Ogbonna’s Lightsworn with absolutely massive Samurai plays, and is headed to the Top 32!
