Sunday Dragon Duel Final: Jack Hoyt vs. Oliver Tomajko
Jack Hoyt has fourteen Dragon Duel Championships under his belt, but he’s turning 13-years old on March 1st, so this is his last chance to win a Dragon Duel at a YCS. 10-year-old Oliver Tomajko still has years of Dragon Dueling ahead of him, but is nonetheless doing everything he can to stop Hoyt in his Dragon Dueling rampage. Both Duelists are currently 3-0 in the Dragon Duels, and a victory here will allow one of them to finish off the tournament undefeated. Jack Hoyt put down his X-Sabers this weekend in favor of Six Samurais, and Oliver Tomajko is running a teched out Gadget Deck, specifically designed to take down Samurai Decks like Hoyt’s.
Hoyt opened up with Six Samurai United, Mystical Space Typhoon, Book of Moon, 2 copies of Grandmaster of the Six Samurai, and Gateway of the Six in his hand. He Set Book of Moon and ended his turn.
Tomajko Summoned Spirit Reaper and tried to attack Hoyt directly with it. Hoyt took the hit instead of using his Book of Moon, and lost a Six Samurai United from his hand due to the Reaper’s effect. Tomajko Set 2 cards in his back row before ending his turn.
Hoyt drew Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan next turn. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Tomajko’s face-down Seven Tools of the Bandit and then activated Gateway of the Six. He Normal Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan next, and Tomajko flipped Book of Moon to put it face-down before Hoyt could Special Summon Grandmaster from his hand. Hoyt put 2 Counters on his Gateway and ended his turn.
Tomajko Summoned Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind next turn and halved the ATK of Kizan with Gale’s effect. Then, he used Gale to attack Kizan, but Hoyt blocked the attack by putting Gale face-down with Book of Moon. In Main Phase 2, Tomajko Set a card to his back row and switched Spirit Reaper into Defense Position.
Hoyt drew Shien’s Smoke Signal next turn and activated it to search his Deck for Kagemusha of the Six Samurai. He Summoned it, putting 2 Bushido Counters on his Gateway, and then Special Summoned Grandmaster of the Six Samurai to add 2 more Counters to his Gateway. Hoyt Tuned Kagemusha with Kizan next, to try to Summon Naturia Barkion, but Tomajko flipped Royal Oppression and paid 800 Life Points to negate Barkion’s Summon. Hoyt attacked Tomajko’s face-down Gale with Grandmaster before ending his turn.
Tomajko Set a monster and passed.
Hoyt drew Kagemusha next turn. He thought for a while about attacking Tomajko’s face-down monster. “I think that’s Sazank,” he said. He attacked Tomajko’s face-down monster with his Grandmaster anyway. He was right: it was Karakuri Ninja mdl 339 “Sazank”! Sazank sent Grandmaster to the Graveyard, and since it wasn’t destroyed, Hoyt didn’t get to use Grandmaster’s effect. In Main Phase 2, Hoyt Normal Summoned Kagemusha and Special Summoned Grandmaster, making the total number of Bushido Counters on his Gateway 10 Counters.
Tomajko Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn and attacked Kagemusha to destroy it. He Set a card to his back row and passed.
