Top 16 Feature Match: Honorable Rudy Munoz vs. Scott Robertson Page

February 13th, 2011

In this Feature Match we’ll see Scott Robertson Page take Formula Monarchs against Honorable Rudy Munoz’s Six Samurai. Samurai Duelists make up half of the Top 16, and Robertson is the only Formula Monarch Duelist left. Formula Monarchs were a much-discussed Deck going into this tournament, but they were under-represented in the Swiss Rounds. This is the first time we’ll see this matchup in a Feature Match this weekend.

Page opened the Match with a hand of Battle Fader, Tragoedia, One for One, Swap Frog, Dark Dust Spirit, and Caius the Shadow Monarch. He Normal Summoned Swap Frog to send Treeborn Frog from his Deck to his Graveyard, and returned Swap Frog back to his hand.

Munoz passed.

Page drew another Battle Fader and Special Summoned his Treeborn Frog in Defense Position. He Normal Summoned Swap Frog again, and this time he sent Ronintoadin to his Graveyard. Swap Frog attacked for 1000 Battle Damage.

“Well, I’ve gotta do something sometime,” remarked Munoz. He Normal Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki, then Special Summoned Grandmaster of the Six Samurai. Grandmaster attacked over Swap Frog, and Page Special Summoned Tragoedia! Kageki attacked Treeborn Frog and Munoz Set 3 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Page drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, and Special Summoned Treeborn Frog. He Tributed it for Caius the Shadow Monarch, but Munoz negated the Tribute Summon with Solemn Warning. He turned Tragoedia to Attack Position; attacked Grandmaster with 3000 ATK; but lost out to Mirror Force.

Munoz attacked with Kageki and Grandmaster; Page tried to Special Summon Gorz; and Munoz negated the Summon with another Warning! The Duel stood at 3000 Life Points to 3100, with Page leading.

Page drew Battle Fader. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, then discarded Battle Fader for One for One. He Special Summoned Fishborg Blaster; Tuned it to Treeborn for Formula Synchron; and drew Sangan. He Tributed Formula Synchron for Dark Dust Spirit to destroy Grandmaster and Kageki, leaving Munoz to retrieve Kageki with Grandmaster’s effect. Dark Dust Spirit attacked directly, and spirited itself away back to Page’s hand.

Munoz searched his deck for Hand of the Six Samurai with Shien’s Smoke Signal. He Normal Summoned Kageki and Special Summoned the Hand, then Special Summoned another Grandmaster. Kageki attacked, and Page Special Summoned Battle Fader to end the Battle Phase. Munoz Tributed Kageki for Hand’s effect, destroying Fader, then Set 2 cards to his back row.

Page brought up his Treeborn, and once again Tributed it for Dark Dust Spirit. That destroyed Grandmaster and Hand, and neither of Munoz’s face-down cards in his back row could save him from the ensuing attack!

Scott Robertson Page takes the first Duel of this Top 16 Match, controlling the pace of play with Battle Faders and picking Honorable Rudy Munoz’s Samurais apart! One more win like that and Page would be on his way to the Top 8.

Munoz started off the second Duel and activated Six Samurai United; Normal Summoned Kagemusha of the Six Samurai, and Special summoned Grandmaster of the Six Samurai. He Set 3 cards to his back row.

Page had Light and Darkness Dragon, Treacherous Trap Hole, Giant Trunade, Cold Wave, Soul Exchange, and Swap Frog. He activated Trunade, and Munoz reluctantly scooped up his back row. Page Normal Summoned Swap Frog to send Treeborn Frog to his Graveyard, then sent Swap Frog to attack over Kagemusha, destroying it. He returned Swap Frog to his hand and Set Treacherous.

Munoz searched his Deck for Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki with Shien’s Smoke Signal, and Normal Summoned it. He used its effect to Special Summon another Kagemusha, but lost both Kagemusha and Kageki to Treacherous Trap Hole! Munoz Special Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan, then attacked with both of his Samurai before Setting his 3 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone again.

Page drew Dark Dust Spirit. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog; activated Soul Exchange to target Grandmaster; and Tributed Grandmaster for Dark Dust Spirit! Munoz destroyed the Spirit and saved his Kizan with Musakani Magatama, leading Page to end his turn. That Magatama was key – it was the beginning of the end for Page in this Duel.

Munoz Normal Summoned Hand of the Six Samurai: it attacked Treeborn Frog, and Kizan made a direct attack.

Page was down to 2300 Life Points. He drew another Light and Darkness Dragon and Special Summoned Treeborn again. He had 2 Light and Darkness Dragons, Swap Frog, and Cold Wave. The Dragons were impossible to Summon at the moment; the Swap Frog wouldn’t do much good; and there was no explosive play to make with the Wave. Page Normal Summoned Swap Frog to send another Treeborn to his Graveyard: “That didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, unfortunately.” It was the only play he could’ve made. “Ronintoadin should’ve stayed in my Main Deck.”

Munoz Summoned a Kageki, and pressed it over Swap Frog with an attack. Hand attacked to destroy Treeborn Frog, and Kizan scored the final blow!

Honorable Rudy Munoz fights back to equalize the Match, winning the second Duel! Page’s hand just didn’t come together, and no matter what he’d done, that Magatama would’ve shut him down. One more Duel would decide which of these competitors would proceed to the Top 8.

Page started the final Duel with Dark Dust Spirit, Puppet Plant, Kinetic Soldier, Raiza the Storm Monarch, and 2 Caius the Shadow Monarch. He Set Kinetic Soldier.

Munoz activated Six Samurai United, and Summoned Kagemusha of the Six Samurai and Grandmaster of the Six Samurai. He drew 2 cards with his United, then attacked into Kinetic Soldier with Kagemusha! Munoz offered Page a high-five as he took 3400 damage. He Set 2 cards to his back row.

“3400! Wow! That card is putting in work,” chuckled Page. He drew Giant Trunade and spent a few moments considering his moves. He activated it, and Munoz Chained Book of Moon to turn Kagemusha face-down, saving himself from another big hit from Kinetic Soldier. Page did some careful math, trying to figure out if he could take the Match right here and now. He took Grandmaster with Puppet Plant, then Tributed it for Raiza the Storm Monarch, sending Kagemusha back to the top of Munoz’s Deck. He attacked with Kinetic Soldier and Raiza, and Munoz was down to 850 Life Points! Page still had 8000.

Munoz drew Kagemusha, returning to 5 cards in hand. He Normal Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki; Special Summoned Hand of the Six Samurai; and Special Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan. He Tributed Kageki to destroy Kinetic Soldier with Hand, then Tributed Kizan to destroy Raiza. Munoz ended with 2 cards left in hand.

Page drew Battle Fader and passed.

Munoz attacked with Hand, and Page Specal Summoned Fader! Munoz Summoned Kagemusha and Tributed it to destroy it.

Page drew Mystical Space Typhoon and passed.

Munoz attacked for 1600 Battle Damage and Set a Spell or Trap.

Page drew another Mystical Space Typhoon and Set it.

Munoz attacked for another 1600 Battle Damage. The Duel now stood at 5400 Life Points to 850, and Munoz Set another Spell or Trap. Page tried to destroy it with Mystical Space Typhoon, but Munoz negated Typhoon with Musakani Magatama.

Page drew Soul Exchange! “YES!” he exclaimed. He destroyed his opponent’s Set Double-Edged Sword Technique with his second Space Typhoon; activated Soul Exchange; and Tributed Hand for Caius to remove Caius itself and deal 1000 effect damage!

Scott Robertson Page is headed to the Top 8 with Formula Monarchs!
