Round 1: Dragoon Frazier Smith vs. Tombkeeper Josh Smith
Frazier Smith brought Gravekeeper’s to the forefront of Dueling with his win at YCS Atlanta. Now, he’s switched over to Dragunities, and his opponent, Josh Smith from Charlotte, North Carolina, stands against him with the very Deck that Frazier Smith once championed!. Frazier’s Dragon Ravines and Josh’s Necrovalleys will battle it out in this Match, as both Duelists rely on their Field Spells to dominate the Duel.
Josh started off the Match by Summoning Thunder King Rai-Oh and Setting 3 cards to his back row.
Frazier opened up with Seven Tools of the Bandit, Cards of Consonance, Dragunity Dux, Dragunity Aklys, Dark Hole, and Trap Dustshoot. He activated Cards of Consonance, pitching Dragunity Aklys to draw Dragunity Legionnaire and Effect Veiler. He Set Seven Tools of the Bandit and Trap Dustshoot, ending his turn.
Josh attacked directly with Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn, and Frazier dropped down to 6100 Life Points.
Frazier drew Solemn Warning. He Summoned Dragunity Legionnaire and activated its effect to equip it with the Dragunity Aklys in his Graveyard. Then, Josh activated Compulsory Evacuation Device to return Dragunity Legionnaire to Frazier’s hand, and the equipped Dragunity Aklys went to the Graveyard. Aklys’s effect couldn’t activate, since it wasn’t equipped to the Legionnaire when it was sent to the Graveyard.
Josh drew a card for his turn and then Frazier activated Trap Dustshoot, revealing Pot of Duality, Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, Gravekeeper’s Stele, and Royal Tribute from Josh’s hand. Frazier sent the Recruiter back to Josh’s Deck. Josh attacked directly with Thunder King Rai-Oh next, and Smith dropped down to 4200 Life Points.
Frazier drew another copy of Dragunity Legionnaire next turn. He Summoned it to the field and used its effect to equip it with Aklys. Then he activated Legionnaire’s effect to send Aklys to the Graveyard and Thunder King Rai-Oh. Then Akyls’s effect tried to destroy Josh’s face-down Mystical Space Typhoon, and Josh Chained it to destroy Smith’s Solemn Warning. Legionnaire attacked directly and Frazier Set Dark Hole before ending his turn.
Josh activated Pot of Duality next turn, grabbing a Gravekeeper’s Commandant from the top of his Deck. Then he activated it to fetch a Necrovalley, and activated the Necrovalley. He Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant next and then activated Royal Tribute, forcing Frazier to discard his entire hand! Gravekeeper’s Descendant attacked next, destroying Frazier’s Legionnaire. (Pot of Duality lets you pick the best card out of the next three you would draw and add it to your hand, but you can’t Special Summon the turn you play it.)
Frazier drew and Set Dimensional Prison next turn.
Josh attacked with his Descendant, and Frazier flipped Dimensional Prison to remove it from the Duel.
Frazier drew Solemn Warning and Set it.
Josh tried to Summon Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn, but Frazier paid 2000 Life Points, dropping down to 1400 Life Points in order to activate Solemn Warning and negate the Summon.
Smith activated Pot of Duality next turn, revealing Dragon Ravine, Dragunity Phalanx and Royal Oppression from the top of his Deck. He activated Dragon Ravine to destroy Necrovalley and then ended his turn. (Dragon Ravine lets you discard a card each turn to add a Level 4 or lower Dragunity monster to your hand or send any Dragon in your Deck to the Graveyard.)
Josh Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter next turn and attacked for 1200 points of damage, dropping Frazier down to just 200 Life Points!
Frazier drew Dragunity Phalanx and pitched it with the effect of Dragon Ravine to search his Deck for Dragunity Dux. He Summoned the Dux to the field, and when Josh removed it from the Duel with Bottomless Trap Hole, Frazier conceded, unable to survive another attack from Gravekeeper’s Recruiter!
Josh Smith defeats Frazier Smith in the first Duel, by using the Deck that Frazier popularized. Will Frazier Smith be able to win the next 2 Duels to secure the Match win?
Frazier Smith opened up with Dragunity Aklys, Mystical Space Typhoon, Dark Hole, Cards of Consonance, Dragunity Legionnaire, and Terraforming. He activated Terraforming to search his Deck for Dragon Ravine and then activated the Ravine. Next, he activated the Ravine’s effect to pitch an Aklys from his hand and search his Deck for a Dragunity Phalanx. Frazier activated Cards of Consonance next, and pitched the Phalanx to draw Seven Tools of the Bandit and Royal Decree. He Set Royal Decree, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Seven Tools of the Bandit before ending his turn.
Josh started off his first turn by sending a Gravekeeper’s Commandant from his hand to his Graveyard to search his Deck for Necrovalley. He tried to activate it, but Frazier Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy it before it could wipe out Dragon Ravine. But Josh had another copy! He activated it, and the Ravine went to the Graveyard. Josh Special Summoned Malefic Stardust Dragon next, and attacked directly for 2500 points of damage. Josh Set 2 cards to his back row and ended his turn.
Frazier drew Cards of Consonance next turn. He activated Dark Hole and the Malefic Stardust Dragon was destroyed.
Josh activated Pot of Duality next turn, revealing Chain Disappearance, Solemn Judgment, and Starlight Road from the top of his Deck. He added Solemn Judgment to his hand and then Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn. Frazier activated Royal Decree in Josh’s End Phase, shutting down Frazier’s 4 Set Traps, including the newly Set Solemn Judgment. (Solemn Judgment could not be used because it was just Set that turn.)
Frazier drew Dragon Ravine next turn! It was a huge topdeck that allowed him to take down Necrovalley and bring the rest of his plays online! He activated it to get rid of Necrovalley, and then pitched Cards of Consonance with the effect of his Ravine to search his Deck for Dragunity Dux. He Summoned Dux to the field and equipped it with Dragunity Phalanx by activating Dux’s effect, then Special Summoned the Phalanx to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana. He equipped Vajrayana with Phalanx when it hit the field, and then Special Summoned Phalanx again, this time Tuning Vajrayana with Phalanx to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon. Stardust Dragon attacked directly and Frazier ended his turn. (If Dragunity Phalanx is equipped to a monster as an Equip Card, you can change it back into a monster and Special Summon it to the field. It’s also a Level 2 Tuner.)
Josh drew a monster and Set it.
Frazier drew Pot of Duality next turn. He pitched it with Dragon Ravine to search his Deck for Dragunity Dux, then Summoned Dux and equipped it with Dragunity Phalanx. He Special Summoned the Dragunity Phalanx and Tuned it with the Dux to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana, then equipped Vajrayana with Phalanx. Next, he Special Summoned Phalanx and Tuned it with Vajrayana to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. Frazier used the effect of Scrap Dragon to destroy his own Set Seven Tools of the Bandit and Josh’s face-down Gravekeeper’s Descendant, then attacked directly with Stardust Dragon and Scrap Dragon, dropping Josh down to 200 Life Points. (Dragunity Dux and Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana both have effects that let you equip a “Dragunity” Dragon in your Graveyard to them when they’re Summoned.)
Josh activated Gravekeeper’s Stele next turn to return Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Graveyard to his hand, then activated Necrovalley to send Frazier’s Dragon Ravine to the Graveyard. But he quickly realized that it wouldn’t be enough – he had no way of handling Frazier’s 2 monsters, and quickly conceded.
Frazier Smith fights back with a miraculous Dragon Ravine to tie up the Match and push it into a third Duel!
Josh started off Duel 3 by Setting a monster along with 2 cards to his back row.
Frazier opened up with Dragunity Phalanx, Terraforming, Seven Tools of the Bandit, Solemn Warning, Dimensional Prison, and Solemn Judgment. He Set Seven Tools of the Bandit, Solemn Warning, Dimensional Prison, and Solemn Judgment, ending his turn.
Josh pitched a Gravekeeper’s Commandant from his hand next turn to grab a copy of Necrovalley from his Deck. Then he Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and activated Necrovalley. He activated Royal Tribute next, discarding a Gravekeeper’s Spy from his own hand and forcing Frazier to discard a Dragunity Phalanx and reveal his in-hand Terraforming. Josh attacked with Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, but Frazier removed it from the Duel with Dimensional Prison. (Royal Tribute forces both players to discard all the monsters in their hand, but it can only be used by a Duelist who controls Necrovalley.)
Frazier drew Dragunity Dux and then activated Terraforming next turn. When Josh paid half of his Life Points to try to negate it with Solemn Judgment, Frazier flipped Seven Tools of the Bandit to negate the Solemn Judgment! Frazier Summoned Dragunity Dux next and equipped it with the Phalanx in his Graveyard. Then he Special Summoned the Phalanx, and when Josh tried activating the last card in his back row, Chain Disappearance, to remove the Phalanx from the Duel, Frazier negated it by paying half of his Life Points and activating Solemn Judgment! Frazier attacked with Stardust Dragon next, destroying Josh’s face-down Gravekeeper’s Spy. He activated Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate the Spy’s effect. Frazier had 1500 Life Points remaining, and Josh had 4000 Life Points.
Josh drew Mind Crush next turn and Set it. (Mind Crush is a Trap Card that lets you guess a card in your opponent’s hand. If it’s there, all copies of it are discarded from your opponent’s hand. If not, you have to discard a card!)
Frazier activated the effect of his Dragon Ravine and pitched a Dragunity Legionnaire to search his Deck for Dragunity Dux, but Josh forced him to discard it with Mind Crush as soon as he added it to his hand. Frazier attacked directly with Stardust Dragon next, dropping Josh down to 1500 Life Points.
When Josh drew Pot of Duality next turn, it was no help. He revealed Necrovalley, Dark Hole, and Gravekeeper’s Assailant from the top of his Deck, and conceded as soon as realized he couldn’t survive another attack from Stardust Dragon.
Both Duelists shook hands and Josh asked the champion of YCS Atlanta to sign a copy of his Necrovalley. Frazier obliged and both players wished each other luck in the rest of the tournament.
After a 2-1 victory over Gravekeeper’s, Frazier Smith and his Dragunities are moving on to Round 2 with a 1-0 record!
