Round 10: Honorable Phillip Pena vs. Botanist Jacob Haar
Our Round 10 Feature Match pits Phillip Pena’s Six Samurai Deck against Jacob Haar’s Plant Synchro Deck. Both of these Duelists currently have 8-1 records, so a victory in this round will put one of them in prime position to reach the playoff rounds!
Pena opened up with Book of Moon; Dust Tornado; Giant Trunade; Kagemusha of the Six Samurai; Grandmaster of the Six Samurai; and Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan. He Summoned Kagemusha and then Special Summoned Grandmaster. He Set Book of Moon and Dust Tornado before ending his turn.
Haar Normal Summoned Card Trooper and activated its effect to send Tragoedia, Charge of the Light Brigade, and Mirror Force from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and boost Card Trooper up to 1900 ATK. He attacked Kagemusha with Card Trooper, destroying it in battle and inflicting 1500 points of damage to Pena’s Life Points. Next, he Set 3 cards to his back row and ended his turn.
Pena drew Six Samurai United next turn. He activated it and then Special Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan. Pena put a Bushido Counter on his Six Samurai United and then Sent it to the Graveyard to draw Mystical Space Typhoon. Then he attacked Card Trooper with Kizan, destroying it in battle and dealing 1400 points of damage to Haar. He attacked directly with Grandmaster and Set Mystical Space Typhoon in his Spell and Trap Card Zone before ending his turn.
Haar Set a monster and a Spell or Trap.. Pena activated Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase to destroy Haar’s newly Set Solemn Judgment.
Pena drew Reinforcement of the Army next turn. He activated it to search his Deck for Kagemusha and add it to his hand. Next, he Normal Summoned Kagemusha and Haar flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field! Haar lost his face-down Dandylion and Pena lost Grandmaster, Kizan, and Kagemusha. Pena returned Kagemusha to his hand with the effect of Grandmaster and Haar Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens to the field off of Dandylion’s effect.
Haar Set a card to his back row and passed.
Pena drew Dust Tornado and then Normal Summoned Kagemusha. Haar immediately flipped Book of Moon to put it face-down, and Pena ended his turn.
Haar flipped Royal Decree next turn, and Pena Chained his face-down Dust Tornado to destroy the Decree and Set another Dust Tornado from his hand. Haar activated Mystical Space Typhoon next, destroying Pena’s face-down Book of Moon. Then, Haar activated Monster Reborn and Special Summoned Card Trooper from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He activated its effect by sending Enemy Controller, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, and Tytannial, Princess of Camellias from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and then attacked and destroyed Kagemusha. He Set a card and ended his turn.
Pena drew Solemn Warning next turn and Set it.
Haar activated the effect of his Card Trooper by sending 2 copies of Debris Dragon and a Foolish Burial from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to boost Card Trooper up to 1900 ATK. Then he activated Pot of Avarice by sending both Debris Dragons, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Tragoedia, and Tytannial, Princess of Camellias from his Graveyard to his Deck, and drew 2 cards. Haar attacked directly with Card Trooper, dropping Pena down to 4600 Life Points. Haar Set a monster and passed to Pena.
Pena drew Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki next turn. He passed without making a play.
Haar activated his Card Trooper’s effect again next turn, sending Pot of Avarice, Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, and Sangan from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to boost it to 1900 ATK. Then he activated Giant Trunade to clear the field of Spell and Trap Cards, and then Normal Summoned Lonefire Blossom from his hand. He Tributed a Fluff Token to activate his Lonefire’s effect and Special Summon Tytannial from his Deck. Finally, he attacked directly with Lonefire Blossom, Card Trooper, and Tytannial to wipe out the last 4600 of Pena’s Life Points!
Pena’s Deck runs out of steam early on and Haar manages to dominate with Card Trooper to win Duel 1! Jacob Haar will be going first in Duel 2!
Pena opened up Duel 2 with The Six Samurai – Irou, 2 copies of Double-Edged Sword Technique, Shien’s Smoke Signal, Solemn Warning, and D.D. Crow. He Summoned Irou to the field and then Set all 5 of his Spell and Trap Cards to his back row.
Haar tried to Summon Card Trooper but Pena negated the Summon by activating Solemn Warning and giving up 2000 Life Points. Haar Set 3 cards to his back row and passed. (Normally, destroying Card Trooper lets its controller draw a card. If its Summon is negated though, it never makes it to the field so Haar didn’t get to draw.)
Pena drew Chain Disappearance next turn. He activated Shien’s Smoke Signal to search his Deck for Kagemusha of the Six Samurai and add it to his hand, and then attacked directly with Irou. Haar lost 1700 Life Points. Pena Set Chain Disappearance and Haar flipped Royal Decree in his End Phase.
Haar activated Monster Reborn next turn to try to revive his Card Trooper, but Pena pitched D.D. Crow to remove the Trooper from the Duel before it could be Special Summoned. Haar Set a fourth card to his back row and ended his turn. (Discarding D.D. Crow lets you remove a card in your opponent’s Graveyard from the game.)
Pena drew Dust Tornado next turn. He Summoned Kagemusha to the field and Tuned it with Irou to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Then he pitched Dust Tornado from his hand to bounce back Haar’s Royal Decree, but Haar Chained another copy of Royal Decree to the effect of Brionac! Pena tried attacking with Brionac next, and Haar flipped Scapegoat to Special Summon 4 Sheep Tokens. One of them took the hit from Brionac and he was left with 3 more.
Haar Normal Summoned Effect Veiler next turn and Tuned it with a Sheep Token to Synchro Summon Formula Synchron and draw a card. Then he activated Mind Control to take control of Brionac and pitched Royal Decree from his hand to bounce back Pena’s Chain Disappearance. Next, he Tuned Brionac with Formula Synchron to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon, and used his Dragon to attack directly.
Pena drew Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki on the following turn before passing to Haar.
Haar Summoned Lonefire Blossom next turn and Pena instantly conceded with only 3500 Life Points left, unable to withstand attacks from Stardust Dragon and Tytannial, Princess of Camellias!
A second copy of Royal Decree proves critical for Jacob Haar, who is able to shut down Pena’s opening hand copies of Double-Edged Sword Technique and maintain a slow pace in the Duel!
Jacob Haar is moving on with a 9-1 record running Plant Synchro!
