Round 2: Storied Francisco Brown VS Saboteur Paul Cooper
Francisco Brown won his Round 1 Match with an aggressive Fabled Deck focused on Fabled Ragin. This round, the Philadelphia Duelist will square off against Kansas City’s Paul Cooper. Cooper is running a Deck Destruction strategy, and with so many discard-activated effects, this Match could get complicated fast! (Remember, having 0 Life Points isn’t the only way to lose a Duel. If you can’t draw a card when you’re required to, you lose. This is what a Deck Destruction strategy tries to force the opponent to do.)
Cooper opened the Match with Gold Sarcophagus, removing Morphing Jar from his Deck to claim it 2 turns later. He passed with an empty field. (Morphing Jar’s Flip Effect forces both players to discard their hands and draw 5 new cards.)
Brown had a hand of Morphing Jar; Glow-Up Bulb; Lonefire Blossom; Fabled Grimro; Fabled Krus; and Dark Hole. He Set Dark Hole, Set Jar, and ended.
Cooper passed again.
Brown drew another Kushano. He Sumoned it, discarded Fabled Grimro to use her effect, and got Fabled Krus from his Deck! “Are you serious! Wow!” Cooper was surprised, and was concerned about the possibility of Darkworld monsters. He was even more surprised when Brown Flip Summoned Morphing Jar! Brown discarded Fabled Krus; Glow-Up; Lonefire; and Kushano, getting a new hand of Scapegoat; Necro Gardna; 2 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter; and Fabled Soulkius. He Special Summoned Grimro with Krus’ effect. On the other side of the table Cooper discarded Magical Stone Excavation, 2 Magical Mallet, Book of Eclipse, Card Destruction, and A Feather of the Phoenix to get a new hand. Brown discarded Soulkius to return Kushano to his hand with her effect, then discarded Kushano and Necro Gardna to Special Summon Soulkius. He Tuned Kushano to Grimro to Synchro Summon Ancient Sacred Wyvern. He then sent Card Trooper from the top of his Deck to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb. He attacked with Glow-Up Bulb first, and Cooper responded with Swift Scarecrow to end the Battle Phase, dodging the bullet. Brown Set Scapegoat to finish out. (Fabled Soulkius can be Special Summoned from the Graveyard by sending 2 cards in your hand to the Graveyard.)
Cooper added Morphing Jar to his hand. He activated Upstart Goblin to draw a card, then cleared the field with Giant Trunade. He Set Morphing Jar, Set a Spell or Trap, and activated Book of Taiyou to flip Morphing Jar! Both Duelists got new hands yet again. Another Upstart got Cooper another draw, and Book of Eclipse put everything face-down. Cooper had 4 cards left in hand and shook his head a moment, searching his Graveyard and trying to figure out his next move. He flipped his Set Book of Taiyou, flipping Brown’s Morping Jar, and once again digging through both Decks by another 5 cards. He Set 2 more cards to his back row, and used Book of Moon to flip down Brown’s Jar. He discarded his last 2 cards to get back Eclipse with Magical Stone Excavation, then counted both Decks: he had 15 cards left to Brown’s 17. He ended his turn, and book of Eclipse resolved, flipping Brown’s monsters face-up: he drew 4 cards; Morphing Jar’s effect activated; and Cooper Chained another Eclipse. Brown Special Summoned Fabled Raven with Krus’ effect, and was the forced to draw discard, and draw some more. With his deck empty there was nothing Brown could do: he couldn’t draw next turn, so he conceded the first Duel. (Book of Eclipse flips all monsters on the field face-down, then flips all the opponent’s monsters back face-up during the End Phase and makes them drew 1 card for each.)
A strong opening for Francisco Brown turns into a nightmare as Paul Cooper grinds away Brown’s Deck card by card for the win! Both Duelists went for their Side Decks before starting Duel 2.
Brown opened with 2 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter; 2 Effect Veiler; Fabled Grimro; and Royal Decree. He Set Decree and Ryko. Those Veilers were going to be pretty stellar here.
Cooper removed Morphing Jar with Gold Sarcophagus just as he did in the first Duel. He sent his remaining 4 cards back to his deck with Magical Mallet, and got another draw with Upstart Goblin. Pot of Duality then revealed Card Destruction, another Duality, and another Upstart: he added Upstart to his hand. That got him another draw, and he Set a monster.
Brown drew Level Eater. He Flip Summoned Ryko to destroy Cooper’s face-down Deep Diver, sending Level Eater, Krus, and Lonefire Blossom to his Graveyard. He attacked for 200 Battle Damage and Set his second Ryko.
Cooper activated Mallet next turn, keeping 1 card and shuffling 2 back to his deck for 2 more draws. He had no followup.
Brown drew Giant Trunade, Summoned Level Eater, and attacked with that and Ryko. He Set Trunade.
Cooper drew to 4 cards in hand, and claimed Morphing Jar from his ‘removed zone’. He passed.
Brown drew Lonefire Blossom. He Summoned it and Tributed it to Special Summon Spore from his Deck. He Tuned it to Level Eater; Synchro Summoned Formula Synchron; and drew Chain Disappearance. He then removed Lonefire Blossom to Special Summon Spore, and Tuned it to Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter for Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Brionac attacked and Brown Set another Spell or Trap, before reducing Brionac’s level to Special Summon Level Eater in Defense Position.
Cooper Set a monster and ended.
Brown drew a third Ryko. He discarded it to bounce away Cooper’s Set monster, then Tuned Formula Synchron to his Level 5 Brionac to Synchro Summon Ancient Sacred Wyvern. It hit the field with 6400 ATK, and when Brown went to attack Cooper stopped the Battle Phase with Swift Scarecrow.
Cooper drew to 6 cards. He Set a monster, then set 2 cards to his back row before activating Book of Taiyou. When Morphing Jar’s effect activated, Brown negated it with Effect Veiler! Cooper attacked Level Eater with the Jar, then discarded A/D Changer for A Feather of the Phoenix in Main Phase 2. That placed Book of Taiyou on top of his deck, and he removed A/D Changer to turn Morphing Jar to Defense Positon. Brown flipped Royal Decree in the End Phase.
Giant Trunade cleared the field; Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter destroyed Morphing Jar; and a massive Ancient Sacred Wyvern attacked to end the Duel!
Francisco Brown battles back to take Duel 2, but Paul Cooper would have the advantage of going first in the last Duel of the Match! It was very possible that Cooper could take the Match before Brown could make his moves.
Cooper Set a monster to start the Duel.
Brown had Sangan; Fabled Raven; Glow-Up Bulb; Fabled Krus; Royal Decree; and Pot of Avarice. He Set Decree and Avarice, then Summoned Sangan and attacked, hitting Cooper’s Sangan and giving him Morphing Jar.
Cooper activated Pot of Duality, revealing Book of Taiyou, Upstart Goblin, and Prohibition from the top of his Deck: he took Taiyou. He activated Giant Trunade to clear Brown’s Spell and Trap Card Zone, then Set 3 cards to his back row plus Morphing Jar. He activated Taiyou to trigger Jar’s effect, then Chained Book of Moon to turn Morphing Jar face-down again. Brown discarded Fabled Krus and used her effect to Special Summon Fabled Raven in Defense Position. Cooper discarded A/D Changer for A Feather of the Phoenix, this time returning Book of Taiyou to the top of his Deck. He activated Prohibition and declared Effect Veiler for the card he’d prohibit. He removed A/D Changer to flip Morphing Jar, and Chained Book of Eclipse. He flipped Upstart Goblin to draw a card, then Set another Spell or Trap, then another. He flipped Card Destruction, and Brown Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens as he discarded Dandylion. Cooper flipped Magical Mallet next, sending 2 cards back to his Deck to draw 2 more. He activated another Mallet next, this time sending just 1 card back to his deck for a single draw. He Set a Spell or Trap and activated another Taiyou to flip Morphing Jar, and chained Eclipse once again! He discarded Deep Diver for another A Feather of the Phoenix, returning Eclipse to the top of his Deck, and Set 2 more cards to his back row. He flipped another Taiyou, flipping Morphing Jar, and both Duelists drew another 5 cards each. Cooped used another Book of Eclipse, then discarded 2 copies of Pot of Duality to get back Card Destruction. He activated, digging further into both Duelist’s decks. Upstart Goblin got him another draw, and he discarded for A Feather of the Phoenix to get Card Destruction back to the top of his Deck. Another Taiyou and a Card Destruction later and it was all over!
Paul Cooper takes the third and final Duel of the Match, devastating Francisco Brown’s Fableds with his Deck Destruction strategy!
