Round 5: Aquatic Nicky Lacaille VS Tombkeeper Marc Hahn
This Round we’d see New Jersey’s Marc Hahn Duel Montreal’s Nicky Lacaille, in a Match that would pit Gravekeepers against Fish. We showed you Nicky Lacaille’s Fish Deck earlier this morning in a Deck Profile, and now that he had an undefeated 4-0 record, it was time to see the Deck in action!
Lacaille opened the Match with a hand of Light and Darkness Dragon; Dupe Frog; Treeborn Frog; 2 Pot of Duality; and Monster Reborn. Duality let him choose between 2 Swap Frogs and Gold Sarcophagus: he took a Swap Frog, shuffling the other cards back into his Deck. He Summoned Swap Frog to send Treeborn Frog from his Deck to his Graveyard, then returned Swap Frog to his hand. He Normal Summoned Dupe Frog to finish out. (Swap Frog can return a monster to your hand to let you Summon an extra “Frog” monster. It also sends a Level 2 or lower Aqua-Type monster to the Graveyard when you Summon it.)
Hahn activated Pot of Duality, revealing Bottomless Trap Hole, Mind Crush, and Royal Tribute: he added Mind Crush to his hand. He Set a monster, Set 2 cards to his back row, and ended.
Lacaille drew another Pot of Duality – his third copy. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog in Defense Position, then Tributed away Treeborn and Dupe Frog for Light and Darkness Dragon! Hahn had no response, and the Dragon attacked to destroy Gravekeeper’s Spy: its effect was negated and Light and Darkness Dragon dropped to 2300 ATK.
Hahn Set another monster.
Lacaille drew Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth, and attacked with his Dragon into Hahn’s Spirit Reaper.
Hahn flipped his Set Smashing Ground, losing it to Light and Darkness Dragon and reducing it to 1800 ATK. He discarded Gravekeeper’s Commandant to knock the Dragon down to 1300 ATK, turned Spirit Reaper to Attack Position, and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Assailant to run over the Dragon. The Dragon’s effect let Lacaille Special Summon Dupe Frog in Defense Position, stymieing Spirit Reaper, and Hahn activated Necrovalley to end.
Lacaille drew Gold Sarcophagus. He activated Pot of Duality to reveal Enemy Controller, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Ronintoadin from the top of his Deck: he added Typhoon to his hand. Lacaille Set Treeborn Frog and Mystical Space Typhoon, then activated Gold Sarcophagus to search his Deck for Giant Trunade, sending it to his ‘removed zone’ to claim it in 2 turns.
Hahn turned Spirit Reaper to Defense Position, then attacked into Treeborn Frog with Assailant: Lacaille blasted Necrovalley with Mystical Space Typhoon in response. Hahn ended his turn by Setting a second Spell or Trap.
Lacaille drew another Mystical Space Typhoon, and activated it in his Standby Phase to target Hahn’s freshly-set Book of Moon. Hahn Chained it to turn Dupe Frog face-down. Lacaille Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, then Tribute Summoned Coelacanth! He discarded Pot of Duality and Special Summoned 2 Fishborg Blaster, and 2 Oyster Meister. He Tuned Fishborg Blaster to Oyster Meister for Armory Arm, Special Summoning an Oyster Token. He Tuned the next Fishborg to Coelacanth, Synchro Summoning Colossal Fighter. He then discarded Swap Frog to Special Summon back Fishborg with its effect, and Tuned it to Oyster Meister for another Armory Arm. He equipped both Armory Arms to Gravekeeper’s Assailant, and slammed Colossal Fighter into Assailant twice! The resulting effect damage from the Armory Arms burned Hahn right out of the Duel. (Armory Arm’s effect always inflicts damage to the opponent when the equipped monster destroys a monster by battle, even if the opponent controls the monster it’s equipped to!)
Nicky Lacaille jockeys for position with an early Light and Darkness Dragon, buying the time he needed to put together a Duel-winning Armory Arm / Colossal Fighter combo!
Hahn started off Duel 2 discarding Gravekeeper’s Commandant to get Necrovalley from his Deck, activating it. He Set a monster and Set 2 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
Lacaille had a hand of Cyber Dragon; Puppet Plant; 2 Swap Frog; Oyster Meister; and Mystical Space Typhoon. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, then attacked, activating Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Necrovalley: Hahn Chained Book of Moon to repel the attack. In Main Phase 2 Lacaille Summoned Swap Frog to send Treeborn Frog to his Graveyard, then used Swap Frog’s effect to return Cyber Dragon to his hand.
Hahn Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, Special Summoning Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck. He Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and Tributed it for Descendant’s effect, destroying Swap Frog and getting Gravekeeper’s Assailant from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Gravekeeper’s Stele, returning Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Gravekeeper’s Recruiter to his hand so he could pitch Commandant again. That got him Necrovalley; he activated it; and he attacked for a total of 3700 Battle Damage.
Lacaille drew Dupe Frog. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, then discarded Puppet Plant to take control of Hahn’s Descendant. He attacked with Descendant to destroy Spy, then Normal Summoned Swap Frog to send Ronintoadin from his Deck to his Graveyard. He then returned Descendant to Hahn’s hand with Swap Frog’s effect and ended.
Hahn drew to 5 cards in hand with 1 card Set in his Spell and Trap Card Zone. Lacaille had 3 cards in hand, with 2 monsters on the field. Hahn Set a monster, then Set another Spell or Trap.
Lacaille drew Pot of Duality next turn and used it to take Torrential Tribute over another Duality and another Swap Frog. Hahn activated Mind Crush to force Lacaille to discard the Torrential. Lacaille returned Swap Frog to his hand, then Set Dupe Frog.
Hahn Summoned Gravekeeper’s Assailant, attacking and turning Treeborn Frog to Attack Position, pressing home 1900 Battle Damage.
Lacaille drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. He had just 2400 Life Points left. He Summoned Swap Frog and sent Dupe Frog to his Graveyard, then bounced Swap back to his hand.
Hahn Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, using it to Special Summon Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck. He Summoned Recruiter; Tributed it for Descendant’s effect; and destroyed Dupe Frog. Lacaille got another Swap Frog from his Deck, while Hahn got another Recruiter. Hahn attacked, and when Lacaille tried to Special Summon Gorz Hahn shut him down with Solemn Warning! (Solemn Warning is a Counter Trap, so you can use it even during the Damage Step when your opponent tries to Summon Gorz.)
Nicky Lacaille just can’t seem to get any offense going in the second Duel, and Hahn takes advantage to press this Match to another game! Lacaille would have the advantage of going first.
Lacaille’s hand was Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth; Dark Hole; Light and Darkness Dragon; Malevolent Catastrophe; and 2 Enemy Controller. He Set Catastrophe.
Hahn got Necrovalley with Gravekeeper’s Commandant; activated Necrovalley; and Set 3 cards to his back row. He set a monster to finish his turn.
Lacaille drew Dupe Frog and Set it.
Hahn Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter from his Deck. He Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant; Tributed Recruiter for its effect; and destroyed Lacaille’s Catastrophe. He got another Recruiter with the first Recruiter’s effect. He then Tributed Spy to destroy Dupe Frog, getting Lacaille Swap Frog from his Deck. Descendant made a direct attack.
Lacaille drew Treeborn Frog. He Set Treeborn and Enemy Controller.
Hahn used Pot of Duality next turn, getting Royal Tribute! He Summoned Recruiter and Tributed it to Descendant, but Lacaille Tributed for Enemy Controller to take control of Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Hahn searched out another Commandant from his Deck, then discarded it to get another Necrovalley. He Set a Spell or Trap, activated Royal Tribute, and forced Lacaille to discard everything but his Dark Hole and Enemy Controller. Hahn had 4 cards Set in his back row, plus a Necrovalley on the field and 1 more in hand. He ended, taking back his Descendant..
Lacaille drew Malevolent Catastrophe, and lost his Dark Hole to Mind Crush. He Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, then Set Catastrophe.
Hahn passed.
Lacaille drew Giant Trunade and passed back.
Hahn attacked with Descendant, and lost everything to Catastrophe! Mirror Force, Necrovalley, Royal Oppression, and Dimensional Prison. He activated Necrovalley after destroying Treeborn, then Set 1 more back row card.
Lacaille drew Ronintoadin, and Hahn flipped Mask of Restrict! Lacaille brought back Treeborn and passed.
Hahn Set a monster and attacked Treeborn with Descendant.
Lacaille drew Snowman Eater; Special Summoned Treeborn Frog; and Set Snowman Eater and a back row card.
Hahn Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, Special Summoning another Recruiter from his Deck. He attacked Treeborn with Recruiter, and attacked Snowman Eater with Descendant. Lacaille destroyed Descendant with Snowman Eater’s effect, and Hahn made a direct attack with Spy. He Set a Spell or Trap to finish.
Lacaille drew Pot of Duality, activating it to reveal Enemy Controller, Puppet Plant, and Light and Darkness Dragon. He took the Dragon and Set Ronintoadin.
Hahn turned Spy to Defense Position, then crashed Recruiter into Ronintoadin. He Set a third Spell or Trap.
Lacaille drew Torrential Tribute. He turned Spy to Attack Position with Enemy Controller, and that cleared his back row so he could Special Summon Treeborn Frog. Giant Trunade cleared Hahn’s Spell and Trap Card Zone, and Lacaille Tribute Summoned Light and Darkness Dragon!
Hahn turned Recruiter to Defense Position, then Set 3 cards to his back row.
Lacaille drew Coelacanth and attacked into Book of Moon, then a Chained Dimensional Prison! The Dragon was removed. Lacaille removed Dupe Frog to Special Summoned Ronintoadin, then Set Torrential Tribute. In the End Phase, Hahn flipped Mask of Restrict again. (Light and Darkness Dragon negates any Spell, Trap, or monster effect, but it only does it once per Chain. If you Chain to Light and Darkness Dragon’s effect with a card like Dimensional Prison, the Dragon can’t stop it!)
Hahn activated Gravekeeper’s Stele, getting back 2 Gravekeeper’s Commandant from his Graveyard. He activated Necrovalley, Summoned Commandant, and lost out to Torrential Tribute. He searched Gravekeeper’s Assailant from his Deck with Recruiter
Lacaille drew Cyber Dragon and passed.
Hahn Summoned Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo and attacked for 1200 Battle Damage! He Set a Spell or Trap.
Lacaille drew another Cyber Dragon! He couldn’t Special Summon it with Fossil Dyna on the field.
Hahn Summoned Gravekeeper’s Assailant, and attacked with Fossil Dyna and the Assailant to end the Duel!
Marc Hahn locks down his opponent with Mask of Restrict and Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo, and takes a decisive win in the third Duel! He moves on undefeated with a 5-0 record!
