Round 7: Flag-Bearer Courtney Waller VS Honorable Kuanchang Lai

March 19th, 2011

With a 5-1 record so far, Courtney Waller is 1 of the highest-ranked Blackwing Duelists in today’s tournament.  Armed with a Vayu Turbo build, he’s scored some impressive wins so far today.  His opponent is Kuanchang Lai, a Samurai Duelist who’s also 5-1 so far.  The winner of this Match would have a strong shot at Day 2, while the defeated Duelist would have to work hard to make up lost ground in the Swiss Rounds.

Lai opened the Match with Shien’s Smoke Signal, searching his Deck for Legendary Six Samurai – Mizuho.  He activated Gateway of the Six; Summoned Mizuho; and Set 3 cards to his back row.

Waller had a hand of 2 Dark Grepher; Solemn Warning; Book of Moon; Delta Crow – Anti Reverse; and Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.  He tried to Summon Dark Grepher, but Lai negated the Summon with Solemn Warning.  Waller Set 3 cards to his back row.

Lai Special Summoned Grandmaster of the Six Samurai next turn, and removed 4 Bushido Counters from his Gateway to get Kagemusha of the Six Samurai from his Deck.  He Normal Summoned it, and when Waller responded with Solemn Warning, Lai negated it with Musakani Magatama!  Waller put Kagemusha face-down with Book of Moon, then ate attacks from Grandmaster and Mizuho. Lai Set another Spell or Trap.

Waller drew Allure of Darkness.  He tried to Summon another Grepher, but this time he lost out to Solemn Judgment!  He activated Allure, drawing Royal Oppression and Burial from a Different Dimension: he removed Vayu, then Set Oppression and Burial.  The Duel stood at 3000 Life Points to 2300, with Lai leading. (Allure of Darkness lets you draw 2 cards, but you have to remove a DARK monster in your hand from play afterwards. If you can’t, all the cards in your hand are sent to the Graveyard!)

Lai Flip Summoned Kagemusha and Tuned it to Mizuho for Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En next turn, but Waller negated the Synchro Summon with Royal Oppression.  But paying 800 Life Points for Oppression’s effect left Waller dangerously low, and Lai attacked to end the Duel with Grandmaster.

Solemn Warning and Solemn Judgment keep Courtney Waller from Summoning any monsters, and Kuanchang Lai plays an aggressive 3 turns to score an easy win!  Waller would need to do a lot better than that to win this Match.

Waller opened with a hand of Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind; Blackwing – Kalut the Moonshadow; Monster Reborn; Pot of Duality; Solemn Warning; and Seven Tools of the Bandit.  He revealed Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame; Solemn Warning, and Delta Crow – Anti Reverse from the top fo his Deck with Duality, adding Delta Crow to his hand.  He Set 3 cards to his back row and Summoned Gale, daring an attack to preempt Delta Crow. (If you control a Blackwing monster, Delta Crow – Anti Reverse can destroy all your opponent’s Set Spells and Traps.)

Lai searched his Deck for Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan with Reinforcement of the Army, then Normal Summoned it to attack: Waller activated Kalut’s effect to boost Gale and destroy Kizan.  Lai Set a single Spell or Trap.

Waller drew Spirit Reaper.  He Summoned it, attacked, and forced Lai to discard Kagemusha of the Six Samurai!  Gale made a direct attack for 1300 Battle Damage, and Lai was down to 5500 Life Points.

Lai Set a monster, and Set a second Spell or Trap: Waller activated Delta Crow in the End Phase, destroying Lai’s Set Crevice into the Different Dimension and Musakani Magatama.

Waller drew Pot of Duality, then Tuned Gale to Reaper to Synchro Summon Blackwing Armed Wing.  He brought back Spirit Reaper with Monster Reborn, hammered 800 damage through Lai’s Kageki, and forced Lai to discard Forbidden Lance with Spirit Reaper. (Blackwing Armed Wing gains ATK AND inflicts Battle Damage when it attacks a Defense Position monster.)

Lai drew to 2 cards in hand, while Waller had Armed Wing, Reaper, 2 Set cards in his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and an in-hand card.  He thought a bit about his options, and offered a concession.

Courtney Waller gets a tremendous Duel 2 opening, and presses the Match to one final confrontation!  No Vayu tricks yet from the Turbo Vayu Duelist: Lai would certainly hope for a strong opening in the last Duel, to maintain that status quo.

Both Duelists wished each other good luck, and Lai started things off with a Set Spell or Trap.  He considered his options for a moment, then ended.

Waller had a hand of Royal Oppression; 2 Solemn Warning; Pot of Duality; Deck Devastation Virus; and Delta Crow – Anti Reverse.  No monsters in sight, but Duality revealed Book of Moon, Black Whirlwind, and Blackwing – Blizzard the far North.  He took Blizzard and Normal Summoned it, attacking for 1300 Battle Damage.  Waller then Set everything else he had to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Lai activated Giant Trunade!  Waller Chained Delta Crow to destroy Lai’s Bottomless Trap Hole, but lost his back row back to his hand.  That left Lai to get Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki form his Deck with Shien’s Smoke Signal; activate Six Samurai United; then activate Gateway of the Six!  Kageki let him Special Summon Kagemusha, and he got Kizan from his Deck with Gateway’s effect.  He Special Summoned Kizan; got another from his Deck with Gateway; Special Summoned that; and then got another to Special Summon as well.  He Tuned Kagemusha to Kageki to Synchro Summon Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En, then got Grandmaster of the Six Samurai from his Deck.  He Special Summoned that, then attacked with everything to end the Duel in one swift blow!

Courtney Waller offers the handshake, and Kuanchang Lai moves on with a 6-1 record!
