Sunday’s Dragon Duel: Tombkeeper-Initiate Nathan Swaim VS Zealous Cole Agan
11-year-old Nathan Swaim from North Carolina is facing off against 10-year-old Cole Agan from Virginia in Sunday’s Dragon Duel! Both of these Duelists are currently undefeated with 3-0 records, but only one of them can finish the day with a perfect record and be named the Dragon Duel Champion!
Swaim opened up Duel 1 with Gravekeeper’s Commandant; Malefic Stardust Dragon; Royal Tribute; Solemn Warning; Mirror Force; and Compulsory Evacuation Device in his hand. He discarded Gravekeeper’s Commandant to grab a Necrovalley from his Deck, and then activated Necrovalley. Next, he Special Summoned Malefic Stardust Dragon by removing Stardust Dragon from his Extra Deck. He Set all of his Trap Cards and then activated Royal Tribute, forcing Agan to reveal his hand consisting of Solar Recharge, Gold Sarcophagus, Glow-Up Bulb, Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast. Agan discarded all of his monsters and then Swaim ended his turn. (“Malefic” versions of popular monsters are Summoned by removing a copy of the real monster in your Deck or Extra Deck from play.)
Agan activated Gold Sarcophagus next turn to remove Judgment Dragon from his Deck so that he could reclaim it 2 turns later. He Set a monster and passed.
Swaim drew another Royal Tribute next turn. He attacked Agan’s face-down monster with Malefic Stardust Dragon. It was a Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter! Ryko destroyed Malefic Stardust Dragon, and then sent Honest, Ryko, and Ehren, Lightsworn Monk from the top of Agan’s Deck to his Graveyard.
Agan drew a card and passed to Swaim.
Swaim drew Dark Hole and ended his turn.
Agan added Judgment Dragon from his removed-from-play pile to his hand next turn, and then activated Foolish Burial to send Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress from his Deck to his Graveyard. He tried to Special Summon Judgment Dragon next, but Swaim flipped Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate the Summon.
Swaim drew Seven Tools of the Bandit and Set it next turn.
Agan activated Solar Recharge next turn. He discarded Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior from his hand to draw 2 cards and send Card Trooper and Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. He Summoned Garoth to the field and tried attacking directly, but Swaim flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to return Garoth to Swaim’s hand. Agan Set a card to his back row and ended his turn.
Swaim drew Book of Moon next turn. He Set it and passed.
Agan Summoned Garoth again next turn and attacked with it, but was stopped by Book of Moon.
Swaim drew Solemn Warning and Set it.
Agan flipped his Garoth and attacked. When Swaim activated Mirror Force to try to destroy it, Agan activated Book of Moon to put Garoth face-down and save it.
Swaim drew Giant Trunade and passed to Agan.
Agan Set a card to his back row and then tried to Flip Summon his Garoth; but Swaim activated Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate the Summon.
Swaim drew Allure of Darkness next turn. He Set his 3 other Spell Cards and then activated Allure of Darkness to draw Gravekeeper’s Assailant and Gravekeeper’s Descendant. He removed the Assailant from the Duel with the effect of Allure of Darkness and then Summoned his Descendant. He activated Royal Tribute, forcing Agan to reveal his hand of Dark Hole and Monster Reincarnation. Then, he declared a direct attack with Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Agan flipped Mirror Force to try to destroy the Descendant, but Swaim negated it with Seven Tools of the Bandit.
Agan Summoned Card Trooper next turn and sent the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard to boost it to 1900 ATK. He attacked the 2000 ATK Gravekeeper’s Descendant and drew a card when the Trooper was destroyed in battle. (Necrovalley gives all “Gravekeeper’s” monsters 500 extra ATK and DEF.)
Swaim drew Gravekeeper’s Stele next turn. He attacked directly with his Gravekeeper’s Descendant, dropping Agan down to 3900 Life Points.
Agan Set a monster and ended his turn.
Swaim drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn and used it to destroy Agan’s face-down Beckoning Light. Next, he activated Gravekeeper’s Stele to return Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Graveyard to his hand. Then he activated Dark Hole to destroy Agan’s face-down Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid. He followed up by Summoning Gravekeeper’s Commandant and attacked directly with it, dropping Agan down to 1800 Life Points.
Agan Summoned Jain, Lightsworn Paladin next turn and passed. He sent Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter and Wulf, Lightsworn Beast from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard in the End Phase due to Jain’s effect, and Special Summoned the Wulf to the field in Attack Position.
Swaim drew Gravekeeper’s Spy next turn. He Set it and then attacked Wulf with his Gravekeeper’s Commandant, destroying them both.
Agan Tributed his Jain to Summon Celestia, Lightsworn Angel next turn, sending 4 cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to destroy Necrovalley and Swaim’s face-down Giant Trunade with Celestia’s effect. Next, he activated Monster Reincarnation and pitched Monster Reborn to return Judgment Dragon to his hand. Agan Special Summoned Judgment Dragon and paid 1000 Life Points to destroy all cards on the field before attacking directly for 3000 points of damage and ending the Duel! (You can Special Summon Judgment Dragon from your hand as long as you have 4 or more different “Lightsworn” monsters in your Graveyard.)
Cole Agan fights back from a first-turn Royal Tribute to win Duel 1 with Judgment Dragon! Nathan Swaim will be going first in Duel 2!
Swaim opened up with Gravekeeper’s Assailant; Gravekeeper’s Commandant; Solemn Warning; Necrovalley; Allure of Darkness; and Torrential Tribute. He activated Necrovalley and then used Allure of Darkness to draw Compulsory Evacuation Device and Gravekeeper’s Spy from his Deck and remove Gravekeeper’s Assailant from his hand. He Set Torrential Tribute, Solemn Warning, and Compulsory Evacuation Device along with a Gravekeeper’s Spy before ending his turn.
Agan activated Gold Sarcophagus to remove Charge of the Light Brigade from his Deck so that he’d be able to add it to his hand 2 turns later. He Set 2 cards to his back row and then Summoned Garoth to the field. He attacked Swaim’s face-down Gravekeeper’s Spy with Garoth, and lost 650 Life Points. Agan Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck with the effect of Gravekeeper’s Spy.
Swaim drew Necrovalley next turn. He activated his Descendant’s effect to Tribute Gravekeeper’s Spy and destroy Agan’s Mirror Force. Agan flipped Book of Moon to turn Gravekeeper’s Descendant face-down, but Swaim flipped it back face-up. Next, Agan Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Commandant. Gravekeeper’s Commandant attacked and destroyed Garoth, and then Gravekeeper’s Descendant scored a direct attack.
Agan Set a monster and ended his turn.
Swaim drew and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter next turn. He Tributed it with the effect of his Descendant to destroy Agan’s face-down Garoth, and used his Recruiter’s effect to search his Deck for another Recruiter. He attacked directly with Commandant and Gravekeeper’s Descendant, dropping Agan down to 1000 Life Points.
Agan added Charge of the Light Brigade to his hand next turn thanks to the Gold Sarcophagus he activated 2 turns earlier. He activated it by sending 3 Spell and Trap Cards from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and grabbed a Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner from his Deck. He tried to Summon it to the field, but Swaim activated Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate Lumina’s Summon.
It was all over 1 turn later, when Swaim Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and finished Agan off with his Recruiter, Descendant, and Commandant!
An early Necrovalley pins down Agan who never gets the chance to build momentum. Cole Agan will be going first in Duel 3!
Agan started off Duel 3 by activating Solar Recharge. He discarded Garoth from his hand to draw 2 cards and send Book of Moon and Ehren, Lightsworn Monk from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. He Set a monster and ended his turn without any Set Spells or Traps.
Swaim opened up with Trap Hole, Gravekeeper’s Spy, Malefic Stardust Dragon, Solemn Judgment, Dark Hole, and Mirror Force. He activated Dark Hole to destroy Agan’s face-down Ryko and then Set Gravekeeper’s Spy. He Set Trap Hole, Solemn Judgment, and Mirror Force before ending his turn.
Agan activated Gold Sarcophagus next turn and removed Judgment Dragon from his Deck so that he’d be able to reclaim it 2 turns later. Then he activated Foolish Burial to send Celestia, Lightsworn Angel from his Deck to his Graveyard. He tried to Special Summon Judgment Dragon next, but Swaim flipped Solemn Judgment and paid 4000 Life Points to negate the Summon of Judgment Dragon. Agan Set a monster and ended his turn.
Swaim drew Seven Tools of the Bandit and Set it next turn. Then he Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy to Special Summon Gravekeeper’s Descendant from his Deck, and used Descendant’s effect to Tribute Gravekeeper’s Spy and destroy Agan’s face-down Ryko. Gravekeeper’s Descendant attacked directly to score 1500 points of damage and Swaim ended his turn.
Agan Set a card to his back row and Summoned Consecrated Light. With Consecrated Light on the field, Swaim would be unable to attack with his Gravekeeper’s Descendant. (No one can Normal or Special Summon a DARK monster or attack with a DARK monster while Consecrated Light is on the field.)
Swaim drew Bottomless Trap Hole next turn. He Set it and passed.
Agan added Judgment Dragon to his hand thanks to the effect of the Gold Sarcophagus that he activated 2 turns earlier. He Special Summoned it and paid 1000 Life Points to clear the field. Swaim Chained Bottomless Trap Hole to remove Judgment Dragon from the Duel. When Judgment Dragon’s effect resolved, Agan lost Consecrated Light and his own Bottomless Trap Hole, while Swaim lost Seven Tools of the Bandit, Trap Hole, Mirror Force, and Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Agan Summoned Lyla next, and attacked Swaim directly for 1700 points of damage, dropping Swaim down to 2300 Life Points. Agan Set a card to his back row and sent Garoth, Celestia, and Wulf from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard in the End Phase due to the effect of Lyla. He Special Summoned the Wulf in Attack Position and play passed to Swaim.
Swaim drew Gravekeeper’s Recruiter. He Set it and ended his turn.
Agan drew a card and Set it in his back row. He attacked Swaim’s face-down Gravekeeper’s Recruiter with Wulf, sending it to the Graveyard and allowing Swaim to search his Deck for Gravekeeper’s Commandant. Then Lyla attacked directly, dropping Swaim down to 600 Life Points. In his End Phase, Agan sent 3 Lightsworn monsters from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard.
Swaim drew Necrovalley next turn. He activated it and then Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Commandant. Next, he removed Stardust Dragon from his Extra Deck to Special Summon Malefic Stardust Dragon from his hand. Malefic Stardust Dragon attacked Wulf, but Agan flipped Mirror Force! Both of Swaim’s monsters were destroyed and Swaim offered the handshake!
Nathan Swaim struggles without Necrovalley early on in Duel 3, allowing Cole Agan to triumph. Cole Agan is the newest Dragon Duel champion!
