Round 11 Feature Match: Dragoon Alberto Gonzalez vs. Botanist Eric Granados

April 10th, 2011

Alberto Gonzalez and Eric Granados are both 8-2 in the tournament, and will need a victory in this round if they are to have any hope at making it into the Top 32. Gonzalez is running a Dragunity Deck that’s capable of Synchro Summoning a Level 8 monster every turn, and Granados is running a Doppelplant Deck that can swarm the field with Tokens and Synchro Monsters. Both Duelists will be giving this Match their all!

Gonzalez opened up with Book of Moon, Monster Reborn, Royal Oppression, Dimensional Prison, Dragunity Legionnaire, and Dragunity Phalanx. He Set Dimensional Prison, Book of Moon, and Royal Oppression, ending his turn.

Granados Set a monster and passed.

Gonzalez drew another Phalanx next turn. He passed without making a play.

Granados Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter next turn and destroyed Royal Oppression before sending Mind Control, Effect Veiler, and Level Eater from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Ryko’s effect. Next, he activated Tuning to search his Deck for Junk Synchron and send Monster Reborn from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Junk Synchron next, and activated its effect to Special Summon Effect Veiler from his Graveyard. After Effect Veiler hit the field, Gonzalez Special Summoned Doppelwarrior from his hand in Defense Position. Gonzalez flipped Book of Moon to put the Doppelwarrior face-down before it could be used in a Synchro Summon. Granados Tuned Junk Synchron with Ryko next, in order to Synchro Summon Frozen Fitzgerald! He reduced its Level by 1 to Special Summon Level Eater from his Graveyard, then Tuned Level Eater with Effect Veiler to Synchro Summon Formula Synchron and draw a card. Frozen Fitzgerald attacked, and Gonzalez couldn’t use his Dimensional Prison due to the Fitzgerald’s effect. Gonzalez lost 2500 Life Points and Granados Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Gonzalez drew another Dragunity Phalanx next turn. He Set it and passed.

Granados activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Gonzalez’s face-down Dimensional Prison, then Tuned Frozen Fitzgerald with Formula Synchron and Doppelwarrior to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. He Special Summoned 2 Doppel Tokens and then activated the effect of his Scrap Dragon to destroy a Token and Gonzalez’s face-down Phalanx. Next, Granados Special Summoned Chaos Sorcerer by removing Formula Synchron and Doppelwarrior from his Graveyard. He then reduced Scrap Dragon to a Level 7 monster in order to Special Summon Level Eater from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Direct attacks from Level Eater, Chaos Sorcerer, and Scrap Dragon wiped out Gonzalez’s remaining 5500 Life Points!

Eric Granados rides Frozen Fitzgerald to victory and defeats Alberto Gonzalez’s Dragunity Deck before it can take off! Gonzalez will be going first in Duel 2.

Botanist Eric Granados

Gonzalez opened up Duel 2 with Giant Trunade, Dark Hole, Effect Veiler, Dragunity Legionnaire, Trap Dustshoot, and Pot of Duality. He activated Pot of Duality to reveal Mirror Force, Dragon Ravine, and Mystical Space Typhoon from the top of his Deck, and decided to take the Ravine. He shuffled Mystical Space Typhoon and Mirror Force back into his Deck, then Set his in-hand Trap Dustshoot and passed.

Granados drew a card and then Gonzalez flipped Trap Dustshoot! Granados revealed Card Trooper, Dark Armed Dragon, Chaos Sorcerer, Cyber Dragon, Mirror Force, and Monster Reborn, and Gonzalez sent the Card Trooper back to Granados’s Deck. Granados ended his turn without playing anything.

Gonzalez drew Dragunity Dux next turn. He played Dragon Ravine and then activated its effect. He discarded Dragunity Legionnaire from his hand to send Dragunity Phalanx from his Deck to his Graveyard. Next, he Normal Summoned Dragunity Dux and activated its effect to equip it with Phalanx. He Special Summoned Phalanx and Tuned it with Dux to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana, then used Vajrayana’s effect to equip it with the Phalanx in his Graveyard. He Special Summoned Phalanx to the field once again, and Tuned it with Vajrayana to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon. Stardust Dragon attacked directly, and Granados dropped down to 5500 Life Points. Gonzalez Set Giant Trunade before ending his turn.

Granados activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Dragunity Phalanx from Gonzalez’s Graveyard, in Defense Position. Next, he Set a monster and a card to his back row.

Gonzalez drew Dragunity Dux next turn, but with Phalanx no longer in his Graveyard, he couldn’t use it effectively just yet. He pitched Dark Hole from his hand with the effect of Dragon Ravine to send Phalanx from his Deck to his Graveyard, then Summoned Dux and equipped it with Phalanx. He Special Summoned Phalanx next, and Tuned it with Dux to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana. He equipped Vajrayana with the Phalanx in his Graveyard, then Special Summoned Phalanx and Tuned it with Vajrayana to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. He used the effect of Scrap Dragon to destroy his own face-down Giant Trunade and Granados’s face-down Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. Then he attacked with Stardust Dragon, and when Granados flipped Mirror Force, Gonzalez Tributed Stardust Dragon to negate it. Scrap Dragon attacked next, wiping out Granados’s Defense Position Dragunity Phalanx.

Granados Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and Set a card to his back row.

Gonzalez drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn, and as soon as he activated it, Granados conceded!

Dragoon Alberto Gonzalez

Alberto Gonzalez takes advantage of a first turn Trap Dustshoot to reveal Granados’s weak hand and grab a quick victory. Eric Granados will be going first in the final Duel of the Match!

Granados started off Duel 3 by Setting a card to each zone.

Gonzalez opened up with Pot of Duality, Terraforming, Nobleman of Crossout, Mystical Space Typhoon, Dragunity Dux, and Effect Veiler. He activated Nobleman of Crossout to remove Granados’s face-down Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter from the Duel, along with 2 more copies from Granados’s Deck. Next, he activated Terraforming to grab a copy of Dragon Ravine from his Deck. He used Pot of Duality next, revealing Monster Reborn, Dragunity Legionnaire, and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror from the top of his Deck. He added the Monster Reborn to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Gonzalez Set Mystical Space Typhoon and ended his turn.

Granados Set a card to his back row and passed.

Gonzalez drew Cards of Consonance, then activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Granados’s newly Set Mystical Space Typhoon. Next, he activated Dragon Ravine and pitched Effect Veiler from his hand to grab a Dragunity Phalanx from his Deck. He activated Cards of Consonance next, discarding Phalanx to draw Dragunity Aklys and Royal Oppression. When he Normal Summoned Dragunity Dux, Granados flipped Torrential Tribute to destroy it. Gonzalez Set Royal Oppression before ending his turn.

Granados Set a monster and ended his turn.

Gonzalez drew Mind Control next turn. He pitched it with Ravine to grab a Dux from his Deck, then activated its effect to try to equip it with the Phalanx in his Graveyard; but Granados discarded D.D. Crow from his hand to remove Phalanx from the Graveyard! Gonzalez attacked Granados’s face-down Spore with Dux, destroying it in battle. He ended his turn.

Granados passed his next turn without making a play and with no cards on his field.

Gonzalez drew Chain Disappearance next turn. He pitched it to add a Phalanx from his Deck to his hand, then Summoned Phalanx and Tuned it with Dux to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana. He activated Vajrayana’s effect to try to equip it with Phalanx, but Granados discarded another D.D. Crow from his hand to remove the Phalanx from the Duel! Gonzalez attacked with Vajrayana, dropping Granados down to 6100 Life Points.

Granados drew a card and passed again.

Gonzalez drew another Chain Disappearance and discarded it to grab Dragunity Legionnaire from his Deck with Dragon Ravine. Then he Summoned it to the field, and activated its effect to equip it with the Aklys in his Graveyard. Gonzalez attacked directly with Legionnaire and Vajrayana, dropping Granados down to 3000 Life Points.

Granados Set a card to each zone and passed.

Gonzalez drew Torrential Tribute next turn. He activated Mind Control to take control of Granados’s face-down Glow-Up Bulb, then Flip Summoned it. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Vajrayana to Synchro Summon Black Rose Dragon, then activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb. When it hit the field, Granados Special Summoned Doppelwarrior from his hand in Defense Position! Next, Gonzalez Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Black Rose Dragon to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon! He activated the effect of his Legionnaire afterwards, sending his Aklys to the Graveyard in an attempt to destroy Doppelwarrior. Granados pitched Effect Veiler to negate the Legionnaire’s effect, and then Gonzalez destroyed Granados’s face-down Pot of Avarice with the effect of his Aklys. Gonzalez discarded Torrential Tribute from his hand next with the effect of Dragon Ravine and added a Phalanx from his Deck to his hand. He Summoned it to the field and Tuned it with Stardust Dragon to Synchro Summon Trident Dragion! He destroyed Dragunity Legionnaire and Dragon Ravine when it hit the field so that it would be able to attack 3 times! Trident Dragion destroyed Doppelwarrior in battle and then the second attack from Trident Dragion wiped out Gonzalez’s remaining 3000 Life Points!

Effective use of Dragon Ravine allows Alberto Gonzalez to take complete control of the Duel and finish the Swiss rounds of the tournament with a 9-2 record. Alberto Gonzalez is moving on to the Top 32 with Dragunities!

Here’s what our expert(s) had to say:

Erik Mishtar (Modern day pharaoh)
Eric Granados ended up losing this Match, but his victory in Duel 1 was a great demonstration of the power of Frozen Fitzgerald. He Summoned it using Junk Synchron and Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, two cards that Plant Synchro Decks with Doppelwarrior already play, and its effect to prevent Gonzalez from using Dimensional Prison was a deciding factor in the Duel.

Effects like Frozen Fitzgerald’s are extremely powerful because they can take care of multiple defensive Spells and Traps all at once. In fact, the effect is very similar to the now-Forbidden Cold Wave. When a card comes along that replicates some or all of a Forbidden card’s powers, it’s usually worth taking notice.
