Round 4 Feature Match: Commander Jeremiah Brown vs. Einherjar Michael Witt

April 9th, 2011

Michael Witt is undefeated here today with Nordics, while his opponent Jeremiah Brown is playing X-Sabers with Reinforce Truth!

Witt started off with a hand of Mind Crush; Giant Trunade; Dark Hole; Solemn Warning; Monster Reborn; and Gleipnir, the Fetters of Fenrir. He Set 3 cards to his back row.

Brown activated Reinforcement of the Army, getting X-Saber Pashuul from his Deck to his hand, but Witt made him discard it with Mind Crush. Brown tried to Summon XX-Saber Boggart Knight, but Witt negated the Summon with Warning. A Set card to his back row finished Brown’s turn.

Witt drew and Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter.

Brown Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight, and before Brown moved to his Battle Phase, Witt flipped Gleipnir, but Brown negated it with Solemn Judgment. Fulhelmknight attacked, Ryko destroyed it, and Witt sent Scapegoat, Pot of Duality, and Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts to his Graveyard with Ryko, then Brown Special Summoned back Fulhelmknight for a direct attack. He ended with 3 cards in hand.

Witt drew Pot of Avarice. He destroyed Fulhelmknight with Dark Hole, then Special Summoned it with Monster Reborn to make a direct attack. Brown was down to 2700 Life Points, and Witt Set a Spell or Trap.

Brown Set a monster, and Set a Spell or Trap.

Witt drew another Gleipnir. He Set it and didn’t attack.

Brown Flip Summoned XX-Saber Emmersblade, then attacked Fulhelmknight, but Witt negated the attack. Brown Set another Spell or Trap, and Witt used Gleipnir in the End Phase to search his Deck for Tanngrisnir.

Witt drew another Pot of Avarice. He activated Giant Trunade, and Brown Chained GottomsEmergency Call to Special Summon Boggart Knight and Pashuul. Witt pressed on, Summoning Tanngrisnir to Tune it to Fulhelmknight for the Synchro Summon of Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. Brionac attacked to destroy Boggart Knight, and Witt discarded Avarice to bounce away Pashuul in Main Phase 2.

Brown Summoned the Pashuul back and Synchro Summoned Naturia Beast. He turned Brionac face-down with Book of Moon and attacked to destroy it. A Set card to his back row finished his turn.

Witt drew Pot of Duality. He Set both of his Spells.

Brown Set a monster and Set a Spell or Trap.

Witt drew Solemn Judgment and Set it.

Brown flipped his Set Pot of Duality, revealing Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, Royal Oppression, and Trap Stun from the top of his Deck. He added Trap Stun to his hand, then flipped another Trap Stun he’d already Set! He Set a monster, then attacked with Naturia Beast to drop Witt to 2500 Life Points. He Set 2 cards to his back row.

Witt drew Effect Veiler and Set it. Another Trap Stun let Brown take Effect Veiler with Mind Control, and he Tuned it to his 2 copies of XX-Saber Darksoul to Synchro Summon X-Saber Urbellum to finish the Duel!

Michael Witt has a tough time getting to his monsters, and Jeremiah Brown glides to a dominant victory in the first Duel! Witt would open Duel 2.

Witt started off the second Duel with Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts; Tanngnjostr of the Nordic Beasts; Giant Trunade; Torrential Tribute; Mystical Space Typhoon; and Chain Disappearance.  He Set Tanngrisnir, Typhoon, and Chain Disappearance.

Brown used Pot of Duality to reveal Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, Solemn Warning, and Solemn Judgment; he took Judgment. He Normal Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight, then attacked to destroy Tanngrisnir. Witt Special Summoned Tanngnjostr, as well as 2 Nordic Beast Tokens for Tanngrisnir’s effect. Brown Set 4 cards to his back row.

Witt drew Guldfaxe of the Nordic Beasts! He activated Giant Trunade, causing Brown to use Solemn Judgment. He then shifted Tanngnjostr to Attack Position to trigger its effect, and Special Summoned another Guldfaxe from his Deck. He destroyed Brown’s Set Monster Reborn with Mystical Space Typhoon, then Tuned Guldfaxe to a Nordic Beast Token and Tanngnjostr for Thor, Lord of the Aesir – but Brown negated the Summon with Solemn Warning. Witt pressed on, Normal Summoning Guldfaxe and Tuning it to the remaining Nordic Beast Token for Ancient Sacred Wyvern with 8100 ATK! It attacked, and Brown negated the attempt with Fulhelmknight’s ability. Witt Set Torrential Tribute.

Brown drew and activated Reinforcement of the Army next turn, getting X-Saber Pashuul from his Deck. He Set it, then turned Fulhelmknight to Defense Position.

Witt drew Monster Reborn. He attacked with Wyvern to destroy Fulhelmknight.

Brown Set another monster.

Witt drew Gleipnir, the Fetters of Fenrir, and Set it. Wyvern attacked to destroy Brown’s freshly-set X-Saber Airbellum.

Brown Set another Spell or Trap.

Witt drew Prohibition, and activated it to call XX-Saber Boggart Knight. In the End Phase, Brown used Reinforce Truth to get another Pashuul from his Deck, Special Summoning it. Witt responded with Chain Disappearance, removing Pashuul from the field.

Brown Summoned XX-Saber Emmersblade, and activated GottomsEmergency Call to Special Summon Airbellum and Fulhelmknight. Witt responded with Torrential Tribute and Brown finished his turn with a blank field. Witt activated Monster Reborn next turn to bring back Ancient Sacred Wyvern, and attacked for 8100 Battle Damage!

Ancient Sacred Wyvern turns this Match around for Michael Witt! This last Duel would decide the victor.

Brown Set a monster, and Set 3 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Witt had Nobleman of Crossout; Pulling the Rug; Super-Nimble Mega Hamster; Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts; Pot of Duality; and Gleipnir, the Fetters of Fenrir. Duality revealed Mystical Space Typhoon, Effect Veiler, and Bottomless Trap Hole, and Witt took the Typhoon. He activated Nobleman to remove his opponent’s XX-Saber Darksoul from the field, then Set 3 cards to his back row. He Summoned Tanngrisnir and attacked for 1200 Battle Damage. In the End Phase Brown Special Summoned X-Saber Pashuul from his Deck with Reinforce Truth, and destroyed Witt’s Mystical Space Typhoon with a Typhoon of his own.

Brown drew to 3 cards in hand, with 1 card Set in his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and Pashuul still on the field. He Normal Summoned Super-Nimble Mega Hamster, then Tuned it to Pashuul to Synchro Summon Naturia Barkion. He was now suppressing Witt’s Gleipnir. Barkion attacked to destroy Tanngrisnir, and Witt Special Summoned 2 Nordic Beast Tokens. Brown Set a second Spell or Trap.

Witt drew Solemn Judgment and Set Hamster.

Brown Summoned XX-Saber Fulhelmknight! It attacked a Nordic Beast Token to destroy it, Special Summoning Pashuul from the Graveyard in Defense Position. Barkion attacked a Nordic Beast Token.

Witt drew Guldfaxe, and Brown took 1000 damage from Pashuul. Witt Flip Summoned Hamster, Brown Chained Solemn Warning, and Witt Chained Solemn Judgment. Witt Special Summoned Tanngnjostr from his Deck, then Normal Summoned Guldfaxe of the Nordic Beasts to attack Fulhelmknight and draw out its negation. In Main Phase 2, Witt Tuned Hamster to Guldfaxe for Scrap Dragon. Its effect destroyed Barkion, and Witt’s Pulling the Rug.

Brown drew to 3 cards. He cleared the field with Dark Hole! He Summoned another Fulhelmknight and made a direct attack!

Witt drew Torrential Tribute and Set it.

Brown activated Monster Reborn and Special Summoned back his Barkion, rendering Witt’s Torrential Tribute useless! Barkion and Fulhelmknight both made direct attacks, and that was the Match.

Jeremiah Brown takes the Match 2-1, locking down the final Duel with Naturia Barkion to capture the win!
Here’s what our expert(s) had to say:

Erik Mishtar (Modern day pharaoh)
Many excellent cards require you to pay Life Points in order to use them.  Take a look at all the cards in your Deck that make you pay Life Points to use them. Add up the total amount you would pay if you played each of them. Is that number 8000 or more? If so, you may want to consider playing fewer cards that require Life Point payments.

In Duel 2, Brown paid 6000 Life Points in a single turn to pay for card effects. It was definitely worth it, as Thor would have easily crushed him and his monsters if he hadn’t, but it limited his options from there on out in terms of what attacks he could and could not allow. Unfortunately, the situation was made worse by the fact that paying those 6000 Life Points bumped Witt’s Ancient Sacred Wyvern all the way up to 8100 ATK!
