Round 10: Alex “It’s ALIIIVE!” Vansant VS Kenneth McCarthy of the Future

May 22nd, 2011

This was the last Swiss Round of the tournament, and both of these competitors had 7-2 records: a win here is the only way either Duelist can reach the Top 32.  We showed you Alex Vansant’s innovative Ultimate Offering Synchro Deck yesterday in a Deck Profile, and later in a Feature Match.  We also saw Kenneth McCarthy in action last night in a Feature Match as well.  After this Match, only one would still have a shot at making the playoffs.

Vansant got us started with Reborn Tengu, and Set 2 cards to his back row.

McCarthy had 2 Reborn Tengu; Mystical Space Typhoon; Giant Trunade; T.G. Striker; and Foolish Burial.  He activated Trunade, and Special Summoned Striker.  He Normal Summoned Tengu, and crashed it into Vansant’s copy: both Duelists Special Summoned their second Tengus in Attack Position.  McCarthy Tuned his to Striker to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, then discarded his in-hand Tengu to bounce away Vansant’s.  Vansant Special Summoned his third, and McCarthy discarded Foolish Burial to bounce it away.  He Set Mystical Space Typhoon, his last card.  A rough first turn for McCarthy, and an expensive gambit.

Vansant Set a monster and Set 2 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

McCarthy drew Bottomless Trap Hole and attacked into Dimensional Prison.  He Set Bottomless.

Vansant Summoned Tengu and made a direct attack, Setting a Spell or Trap.

McCarthy drew and Set Torrential Tribute.

Vansant Flip Summoned Dandylion, and Normal Summoned Glow-Up Bulb: McCarthy flipped Torrential Tribute.  Vansant Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens, then Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb, sending Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 “Saizan” to his Graveyard to do so.  He Tuned Bulb to a Fluff Token and drew a card with Formula Synchron, then drew 2 more with Pot of Avarice, shuffling back 2 Tengus, Watchdog, Dandylion, and Glow-Up Bulb.  He discarded a Tengu to activate One for One, and Special Summoned Spore from his Deck, attacking with it for 400 Battle Damage.  In Main Phase 2 he Tuned Spore to his second Fluff Token for another Formula Synchron in Defense Position.

McCarthy drew Monster Reborn, and activated it to target T.G. Striker: Vansant had no response, and Striker came up in Defense Position.

Vansant Summoned Reborn Tengu, and McCarthy removed it with Bottomless Trap Hole: Vansant brought out another from his Deck.  He Tuned Formula Synchron to Tengu to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and discarded Red Gadget to bounce McCarthy’s Striker back to his hand.  He discarded Effect Veiler next, targeting McCarthy’s Mystical Space Typhoon, which he Chained to destroy Vansant’s Solemn Warning.  Brionac made a direct attack, and Vansant Set another Spell or Trap.

McCarthy drew T.G. Warwolf.  He Special Summoned Striker and Set Warwolf.  It was all over next turn as Vansant Summoned Red Gadget, forcing McCarthy to concede.
A rough opening for Kenneth McCarthy leads to victory for Alex Vansant!

McCarthy had a tough opening once again: D.D. Crow; Lonefire Blossom; 2 Reborn Tengu; Dimensional Prison; and Glow-Up Bulb.  He Set Tengu and Prison.

Vansant Summoned Yellow Gadget, getting Green Gadget from his Deck.  It attacked into Reborn Tengu, and McCarthy Special Summoned another from his Deck.  Vansant Set 3 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

McCarthy drew Chain Disappearance.  He attacked with Tengu to destroy Yellow Gadget, then Set Lonefire Blossom and Chain Disappearance: Vansant destroyed Disappearance in the End Phase with Mystical Space Typhoon.

Vansant flipped another Mystical Space Typhoon next turn, destroying McCarthy’s Dimensional Prison.  He took control of Lonefire Blossom with Mind Control, tried to Tribute it, and realized Mind Control would stop him from doing so.  He Normal Summoned Effect Veiler and Tuned it to Lonefire, Synchro Summoning Armory Arm to run over Reborn Tengu.

McCarthy drew Dimensional Prison; Set Glow-Up Bulb; and Set Prison.

Vansant Normal Summoned Yellow Gadget, getting Green from his Deck.  He attacked with Yellow to destroy McCarthy’s Bulb, then attacked into Dimensional Prison with Armory Arm.

McCarthy drew Mystical Space Typhoon, activating it to destroy Vansant’s Mirror Force and clearing his back row.  He Summoned his last Tengu and attacked Yellow Gadget, destroying it.

Vansant Normal Summoned Beast King Barbaros, attacking over Tengu.

McCarthy drew another Typhoon and Set it.  He Normal Summoned D.D. Crow, Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb by sending One for One to his Graveyard from the top of his Deck, then Tuned his monsters together for Formula Synchron: he drew Effect Veiler.  No help there.

Vansant Summoned Green Gadget, and attacked with Barbaros and the Gadget.  McCarthy was down to 6300 Life Points

McCarthy drew and Set a Solemn Warning.

Vansant attacked again, hitting directly with Green Gadget and Barbaros to lower McCarthy to 3000.  He Set a card to his back row.

McCarthy drew T.G. Warwolf and Set it.

Vansant attacked with Beast King Barbaros, destroying Warwolf, and made a direct hit with Green Gadget.  McCarthy destroyed Vansant’s Set Forbidden Lance with Typhoon in the End Phase, then searched T.G. Rush Rhino from his Deck with Warwolf’s effect.

McCarthy drew another Warwolf.  He Summoned Rhino to attack over Barbaros, cling to his life in this tournament.

Vansant had another Barbaros!  It attacked to destroy Rush Rhino, and Green Gadget attacked for game!
McCarthy falls victim to two straight double-Tengu opening hands, and Alex Vansant finishes the Swiss Rounds with an 8-2 record. Will it be enough to pull him through to the playoffs? Stay tuned to find out!
