Round 10: Alex “It’s ALIIIVE!” Vansant VS Kenneth McCarthy of the Future

May 22nd, 2011

This was the last Swiss Round of the tournament, and both of these competitors had 7-2 records: a win here is the only way either Duelist can reach the Top 32.  We showed you Alex Vansant’s innovative Ultimate Offering Synchro Deck yesterday in a Deck Profile, and later in a Feature Match.  We also saw Kenneth McCarthy in action last night in a Feature Match as well.  After this Match, only one would still have a shot at making the playoffs.

Vansant got us started with Reborn Tengu, and Set 2 cards to his back row.

McCarthy had 2 Reborn Tengu; Mystical Space Typhoon; Giant Trunade; T.G. Striker; and Foolish Burial.  He activated Trunade, and Special Summoned Striker.  He Normal Summoned Tengu, and crashed it into Vansant’s copy: both Duelists Special Summoned their second Tengus in Attack Position.  McCarthy Tuned his to Striker to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, then discarded his in-hand Tengu to bounce away Vansant’s.  Vansant Special Summoned his third, and McCarthy discarded Foolish Burial to bounce it away.  He Set Mystical Space Typhoon, his last card.  A rough first turn for McCarthy, and an expensive gambit.

Vansant Set a monster and Set 2 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

McCarthy drew Bottomless Trap Hole and attacked into Dimensional Prison.  He Set Bottomless.

Vansant Summoned Tengu and made a direct attack, Setting a Spell or Trap.

McCarthy drew and Set Torrential Tribute.

Vansant Flip Summoned Dandylion, and Normal Summoned Glow-Up Bulb: McCarthy flipped Torrential Tribute.  Vansant Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens, then Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb, sending Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 “Saizan” to his Graveyard to do so.  He Tuned Bulb to a Fluff Token and drew a card with Formula Synchron, then drew 2 more with Pot of Avarice, shuffling back 2 Tengus, Watchdog, Dandylion, and Glow-Up Bulb.  He discarded a Tengu to activate One for One, and Special Summoned Spore from his Deck, attacking with it for 400 Battle Damage.  In Main Phase 2 he Tuned Spore to his second Fluff Token for another Formula Synchron in Defense Position.

McCarthy drew Monster Reborn, and activated it to target T.G. Striker: Vansant had no response, and Striker came up in Defense Position.

Vansant Summoned Reborn Tengu, and McCarthy removed it with Bottomless Trap Hole: Vansant brought out another from his Deck.  He Tuned Formula Synchron to Tengu to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and discarded Red Gadget to bounce McCarthy’s Striker back to his hand.  He discarded Effect Veiler next, targeting McCarthy’s Mystical Space Typhoon, which he Chained to destroy Vansant’s Solemn Warning.  Brionac made a direct attack, and Vansant Set another Spell or Trap.

McCarthy drew T.G. Warwolf.  He Special Summoned Striker and Set Warwolf.  It was all over next turn as Vansant Summoned Red Gadget, forcing McCarthy to concede.
