Round 6: Alex “It’s ALIIIVE!” Vansant VS Botanist Patrick Hoban
Earlier today we showed you Alex Vansant’s Tengu Gadget Synchro Deck in a Deck Profile, which hinges on the use of Ultimate Offering to unlock massive Synchro combos. Here in Round 6, Vansant is 4-1, and is set to duke it out with Patrick Hoban, and his Debris Plant Chaos Deck. The winner of this Match would move on with their Day 2 dreams intact. The other Duelist might have a tough time making it to Round 9 tomorrow.
Hoban opened the Match by Setting 3 cards to his back row.
Vansant had a hand of Green Gadget; Foolish Burial; Mind Control; Mirror Force; Yellow Gadget; and Lonefire Blossom. He tried to Summon Green Gadget, but Hoban negated the Summon with Solemn Warning. Vansant Set Mirror Force.
Hoban Set another Spell or Trap.
Vansant drew another Green Gadget. He tried for that one, and Hoban had another Warning! “If you’ve got a third Green Gadget, you’ve got me,” remarked Hoban. Both Duelists laughed.
Hoban Set a third Spell or Trap again.
Vansant drew Solemn Warning and Summoned Lonefire Blossom, Tributing it to get another from his Deck. He Tributed that Lonefire, and Special Summoned Spore in Attack Position. Foolish Burial let him send Dandylion to his Graveyard, and he Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens. He Tuned Spore to a Token to Summon Formula Synchron and draw Ultimate Offering, then Set 2 cards to his back row.
Hoban activated Monster Reborn, targeting Vansant’s Lonefire Blossom and Tributing it for its effect: Vansant debated a moment before responding with Solemn Warning. Hoban Chained Solemn Judgment, using the Lonefire to Special Summon his own, and Tributing that to Summon his second copy. He Tributed the third Lonefire in the sequence to Special Summon Dandylion in Defense Position, then activated Limit Reverse to bring back Lonefire Blossom. He Tributed Dandylion for Lonefire’s effect, Special Summoning 2 Fluff Tokens and Spore. He Tuned Spore to a Fluff Token for Formula Synchron; drew a card; and removed Lonefire to Special Summon Spore back as a Level 4 Tuner. He Tuned it to Lonefire and the last Fluff Token, Synchro Summoning Stardust Dragon. He Normal Summoned Card Trooper, sending Debris Dragon, Pot of Avarice, and Sangan to his Graveyard to boost Trooper to 1900 ATK. Trooper attacked to destroy Vansant’s Synchron, and Stardust destroyed his Fluff Token.
Vansant drew Dark Hole. He was holding Dark Hole, Mind Control, and Yellow Gadget, with Ultimate Offering and Mirror Force Set. After a lot of thinking, he activated Mind Control to target Card Trooper: Hoban responded, Chaining Formula Synchron’s effect to Tune it to Trooper and Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor. Vansant Normal Summoned Yellow Gadget and didn’t use its search effect: he removed Lonefire to Special Summon Spore, then Tuned it to the Gadget to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon. Vansant ended without attacking.
Hoban removed Sangan and Formula Synchron from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer, using its effect to remove Vansant’s Stardust from the field. He Tributed the Sorcerer for Caius the Shadow Monarch and removed Vansant’s Mirror Force from the game. Catastor, Caius, and Stardust all attacked to finish the Duel!
Alex Vansant draws all of his Green Gadgets, alienating him from his search with Yellow Gadget and leaving Patrick Hoban to take the win with Stardust Dragon locking down Vansant’s Mirror Force!
Vansant opened with Reborn Tengu; Pot of Avarice; One for One; Dimensional Prison; Yellow Gadget; and Chain Disappearance. He Summoned Tengu, then Set Prison and Disappearance.
Hoban Summoned Card Trooper, sending Effect Veiler, Dust Tornado, and Solemn Judgment to the Graveyard to boost Trooper up to 1900 ATK. Trooper attacked Tengu, and Vansant removed it with Dimensional Prison. Hoban Set a single Spell or Trap.
Vansant drew Solemn Warning, and Summoned Yellow Gadget to get Green Gadget from his Deck. He attacked with Tengu and the Gadget, knocking Hoban down to 5100 Life Points. He Set Warning.
Hoban Summoned another Trooper, this time sending Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress, Chaos Sorcerer, and another Dust Tornado to his Graveyard to attack over Tengu. Vansant Special Summoned another from his Deck, and Hoban Set a second Spell or Trap.
Vansant drew his third Tengu. He discarded it for One for One, Special Summoning Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck: Hoban cleared the field with Torrential Tribute, drawing with Card Trooper’s ability. Vansant Sumoned Green Gadget to get Red Gadget, then attacked for 1400 Battle Damage.
Hoban activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Vansant’s Chain Disappearance. He tried to Special Summon Cyber Dragon, but Vansant negated the Summon with Solemn Warning, not willing to give over his Green Gadget to a Chimeratech Fortress Dragon. He dropped to 5800 Life Point to pay for the Warning. Hoban Normal Summoned Debris Dragon; Special Summoned Card Trooper; then sent Lonefire Blossom, Debris Dragon, and Call of the Haunted to his Graveyard as a cost for Card Trooper’s effect (which was negated, since Debris Dragon was negating Trooper’s effect). He Tuned Trooper to Debris for Black Rose Dragon, then attacked over Green Gadget.
Vansant activated Pot of Avarice, sending Yellow Gadget, Green Gadget, and 3 Reborn Tengu back to his Deck to draw Effect Veiler and Yellow Gadget. He added them to his hand of Red Gadget and Dark Hole, with a bare field. He used Dark Hole to destroy his opponent’s Black Rose Dragon, then Summoned Red Gadget to get another Yellow.
Hoban Special Summoned Chaos Sorcerer, then attacked over Red Gadget and Set a monster.
Vansant drew Ultimate Offering. He Summoned Yellow Gadget to get Green, then attacked with Yellow to destroy Hoban’s Set Glow-Up Bulb. He Set Ultimate Offering.
Hoban used Chaos Sorcerer to remove Vansant’s Gadget from the field, then sent Book of Moon from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb. He Tuned it to Chaos Sorcerer for Arcanite Magician, and Vansant negated its effect by discarding Effect Veiler.
Vansant activated Ultimate Offering. He paid 500 Life Points to Summon Yellow Gadget, getting Green Gadget from his Deck. He paid another 500 Life Points, Summoning Green to get Red. He sent Foolish Burial off the top of his Deck to the Graveyard to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb, and Tuned it to his Gadgets to Synchro Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Hoban immediately conceded.
Ultimate Offering delivers, as Vansant unleashes his Trishula tricks and presses this Match to 1 more Duel!
Hoban Set 3 cards to his back row, and Summoned Doomcaliber Knight to start the last Duel.
Vansant had a hand of Cyber Dragon; Yellow Gadget; Green Gadget; Giant Trunade; Chain Disappearance; and Dust Tornado. He Summoned Yellow Gadget, losing it to Doomcaliber Knight’s effect. He Set Chain Disappearance and Dust Tornado.
Hoban Summoned Spirit Reaper, and Vansant removed it with Chain Disappearance.
Vansant drew Call of the Haunted and Sumoned Green Gadget to get Red Gadget and attacked for 1400 Battle Damage. He Set Call and ended.
Hoban activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Vansan’t Dust Tornado: he Chained it, destroying Hoban’s Dimensional Prison. Hoban Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, and Fused it to Green Gadget for Chimeratech Fortress Dragon! Fortress Dragon attacked as time was called, and Vansant took 2000 damage. Hoban Set a monster, and in the End Phase, Vansant flipped Call of the Haunted to bring back Green Gadget and get another Red from his Deck.
Vansant drew Solemn Warning. He activated Giant Trunade, bouncing his Call and losing his Green Gadget. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, then Normal Summoned Red Gadget to get Yellow. Cyber Dragon attacked over Chimeratech, and Red Gadget attacked to destroy Hoban’s Dandylion. Hoban Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens. Vansant Fused his Cyber Dragon and Gadget for his own Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, then Set Warning and Call.
The Duel stood at 6500 Life Points to 6000, with Hoban leading: he Set a monster, then Set 2 cards to his back row.
Vansant drew Mind Control. He Summoned Yellow Gadget to get Green, then took control of Hoban’s face-down with Mind Control: “Be a Tuner!” The monster Vansant had pilfered was not a Tuner: it was Sangan. Vansant was disappointed. He Flip Summoned it, then attacked with Yellow Gadget to destroy a Fluff Token. Chimeratech attacked next, and Hoban flipped Dimensional Prison to remove it. Vansant flipped Call of the Haunted to bring back Green Gadget and attacked the last Fluff Token. Hoban flipped his own Call of the Haunted, bringing back Dandylion.
Hoban turned Dandylion to Defense Position, and rammed Sangan into Yellow Gadget to destroy Sangan and search his Deck for Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. He Set it, and Set his last card to his back row.
It was the last turn of the Duel and Vansant was up. This was his last chance. He drew Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 “Saizan”! He Summoned it, and Tuned it to Yellow Gadget to Synchro Summon Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X “Bureido”. Bureido’s effect let him Special Summon another Watchdog, and he Tuned that to Green Gadget. Vansant Synchro Summoned Scrap Dragon, and destroyed his Call to destroy Hoban’s Set Ryko. Bureido attacked Dandylion; Vansant negated its effect with Solemn Warning; and Scrap Dragon attacked directly. That left Vansant at 4000 Life Points, and dropped Hoban to 3500! Hoban’s last Set card had been Solemn Judgment: no help in a scenario like this!
Alex Vansant takes a huge win, busting out Bureido tricks to narrowly escape defeat on the last turn of the Match!
