Jonathan Cortez and Juan Morales are both 7-0 right now, guaranteed to make it to Day 2. But one of them will advance with a perfect 8-0 record and a near-guaranteed spot in the Top 32. Cortez is running a Genex Water Synchro Deck that uses Genex Undine, Reborn Tengu, and Destiny Hero – Malicious to generate cool combos and big Synchro Summons. Morales is running the Deck we saw in our Round 6 Feature Match, built around Reborn Tengu and Genex Ally Birdman.

Morales started off the Match by activating Pot of Duality and revealing Reborn Tengu, Plaguespreader Zombie, and Junk Synchron from the top of his Deck. He added the Tengu to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Next, he Set a monster and ended his turn.

Cortez opened up with Chaos Sorcerer, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Giant Trunade, Monster Reborn, Pot of Avarice, and Dark Hole. He ended his turn without making a play.

Morales Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu next turn and attacked directly, dropping Cortez down to 6300 Life Points. Cortez Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness from his hand, along with an Emissary of Darkness Token in Defense Position. Morales Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter in Main Phase 2, destroying Gorz and sending Solemn Judgment, Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Debris Dragon from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Ryko’s effect.

Cortez drew Reborn Tengu next turn. He Summoned it to the field and then switched his Emissary of Darkness Token into Attack Position. Then he attacked Morales’s Tengu with his own, destroying them both. Both Duelists Special Summoned another Tengu from their Decks, and the two Tengus clashed again. They each Special Summoned their final Tengu, and one last time, the Tengus destroyed each other in battle. The Token took down Morales’s Attack Position Ryko next, dropping Morales down to 6500 Life Points.

Morales Special Summoned Unknown Synchron next turn and then Normal Summoned Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress from his hand. He Tuned Unknown Synchron with Lyla to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor and then attacked Cortez’s Token to destroy it. He ended his turn without any cards in his back row.

Cortez drew One for One next turn. He activated One for One by discarding Chaos Sorcerer, and Special Summoned Treeborn Frog from his Deck with its effect. Then he activated Pot of Avarice. He shuffled Chaos Sorcerer, Gorz, and 3 copies of Reborn Tengu back into his Deck to draw Treeborn Frog and Mystical Space Typhoon. He Set the Treeborn Frog and then ended his turn.

Morales Normal Summoned Card Trooper next turn and used it to attack and destroy Cortez’s face-up Treeborn Frog. Then he activated One for One and discarded Effect Veiler to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Card Trooper and Catastor to Synchro Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and used Trishula’s effect to remove Treeborn Frog from Cortez’s Graveyard, Treeborn Frog from his field, and Giant Trunade from his hand.

Cortez drew Reborn Tengu next turn. He activated Dark Hole to destroy Trishula and then activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from Morales’s Graveyard. Next, he Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu and Tuned it with Glow-Up Bulb to Synchro Summon Magical Android. Tengu’s effect activated and Cortez Special Summoned another copy from his Deck. Tengu attacked Cortez directly, and then Magical Android attacked directly, dropping Morales down to 2400 Life Points. Morales Special Summoned Gorz when he took the damage, Special Summoning a 2400 ATK and DEF Token in Defense Position. Morales Set Mystical Space Typhoon and then ended his turn, gaining 600 Life Points thanks to the effect of his Android.

Morales sent Mystical Space Typhoon from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from his Graveyard, and then Tuned it with his Emissary of Darkness Token to Synchro Summon Stardust Dragon. Gorz attacked and destroyed Magical Android, dropping Cortez down to 6600 Life Points, and then Stardust Dragon attacked and destroyed Reborn Tengu, allowing Cortez to Special Summon another copy from his Deck. Morales ended his turn with Stardust Dragon and Gorz on the field.

Cortez drew Lonefire Blossom next turn! He Normal Summoned it and Tributed it to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck. Unfortunately for Cortez, 2 of his Reborn Tengus were already in the Graveyard. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Reborn Tengu to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor and then sent Mind Control from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb back from the Graveyard. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Catastor to Summon Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth, and attacked Stardust Dragon with Gaia to destroy Stardust Dragon and deal 100 points of damage to Morales.

Morales activated Monster Reborn next turn to Special Summon Stardust Dragon in Attack Position. Then he Normal Summoned Genex Ally Birdman. Gorz attacked and destroyed Gaia Knight, and then Birdman and Stardust Dragon attacked directly, dropping Cortez down to 1800 Life Points.

Cortez drew Caius the Shadow Monarch next turn and conceded with no legal plays to make.

Some poor draws for Jonathan Cortez allow Juan Morales to defeat him with relative ease in Duel 1! Cortez will be going first in Duel 2!

Cortez opened up with Chaos Sorcerer, Reborn Tengu, Effect Veiler, Dandylion, Pot of Avarice, and Genex Controller. He Set Dandylion and ended his turn.

Morales activated Pot of Duality, revealing Solemn Warning, Ryko, and D.D. Warrior Lady from the top of his Deck. He added the Warrior Lady to his hand and then Normal Summoned it to the field. Cortez attacked Morales’s face-down Dandylion with his Warrior Lady and removed both of the monsters from the Duel.

Cortez drew Fishborg Blaster next turn and then Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu. He attacked directly for 1700 points of damage before ending his turn.

Morales activated Pot of Duality next turn, revealing D.D. Warrior Lady, Reborn Tengu, and Genex Ally Birdman from the top of his Deck. He added the Birdman to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Morales Set a monster before ending his turn.

Cortez drew Lonefire Blossom next turn. He Tributed it to Special Summon another copy from his Deck, and then Tributed that copy to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb. Next, he Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Reborn Tengu to Synchro Summon Magical Android, and Special Summoned another Tengu from his Deck. Then he sent One for One from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb back from the Graveyard, and Tuned it with Reborn Tengu to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor and Special Summon another Tengu from his Deck. Cortez activated Pot of Avarice next, sending 2 Tengus, 2 Lonefire Blossoms, and a Glow-Up Bulb from his Graveyard back to his Deck in order to draw Genex Undine and Treeborn Frog. Cortez attacked Morales’s face-down Card Trooper with his Tengu, destroying it in battle and allowing Morales to draw a card, and then attacked directly with Catastor and Magical Android, dropping Morales down to 1700 Life Points. Cortez ended his turn with 3 monsters on the field, but no cards in his back row.

Morales activated Dark Hole to destroy Catastor, Android, and Reborn Tengu, and then Cortez Special Summoned another Tengu from his Deck. Morales Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu and then returned it to his hand to Special Summon Genex Ally Birdman from his hand and Special Summon another Reborn Tengu from his Deck. Next, he Tuned Birdman with Tengu to Synchro Summon Scrap Archfiend and Special Summon another Tengu from his Deck. Scrap Archfiend attacked and destroyed Cortez’s Reborn Tengu, and then Cortez Special Summoned a Tengu from his Deck in Defense Position. Morales’s Tengu wiped out that Tengu in battle and play passed to Cortez.

Cortez drew Compulsory Evacuation Device next turn and then removed Magical Android and Ally of Justice Catastor from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer to the field. He used Sorcerer’s effect to remove Morales’s Scrap Archfiend from the Duel, and then Normal Summoned Genex Undine. Cortez used the Undine’s effect to add a Genex Controller from his Deck to his hand and send a Treeborn Frog from his Deck to his Graveyard. Cortez Set Compulsory Evacuation Device before ending his turn.

Morales Set a monster and switched Reborn Tengu to Defense Position, ending his turn without a back row. Cortez activated Compulsory Evacuation Device in the End Phase to return Morales’s face-down monster to his hand.

Cortez Special Summoned Treeborn Frog next turn and then Normal Summoned Fishborg Blaster. He Tuned Treeborn Frog with Fishborg Blaster to Synchro Summon Formula Synchron and draw Gorz from his Deck. Then he removed Morales’s Tengu from the Duel with Chaos Sorcerer and discarded Genex Controller from his hand to Special Summon Fishborg Blaster back from the Graveyard. He Tuned Genex Undine with Fishborg Blaster to Synchro Summon Armory Arm, and then Tuned Armory Arm with Formula Synchron to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Brionac attacked directly to wipe out Morales’s remaining 1700 Life Points, and the Match pressed on to a third Duel!

Morales started off Duel 3 by Setting a card to each zone.

Cortez opened up Duel 3 with Glow-Up Bulb, Compulsory Evacuation Device, Destiny Hero – Malicious, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Effect Veiler, and Fishborg Blaster. He Set Compulsory Evacuation Device and then ended his turn.

Morales Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant and then attacked directly. Cortez flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to return Morales’s face-down monster to his hand, and then tried to Special Summon Gorz when he took the 1500 points of damage from Descendant; but Cortez flipped Solemn Warning and gave up 2000 Life Points to negate the Summon of Gorz!

Cortez drew Fishborg Blaster next turn and Set it.

Morales Summoned Banisher of the Radiance and then attacked Fishborg Blaster with Descendant, removing the Fishborg Blaster from the Duel. Banisher of the Radiance attacked directly next, dropping Cortez down to 4900 Life Points.

Cortez drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn. He Set Effect Veiler and ended his turn.

Morales Summoned D.D. Warrior Lady next turn. D.D. Warrior Lady attacked and destroyed Effect Veiler, and then Gravekeeper’s Descendant and Banisher of the Radiance attacked directly, dropping Cortez down to 1800 Life Points.

Cortez drew One for One. It was no help against Morales’s field of 3 monsters, especially with Banisher of the Radiance removing all cards from the Duel. Cortez offered the handshake and Morales was declared the winner of the Match!
