Top 32: Johnathan “Nevermore” Harrison VS Jason “Doppler” Gilbert

May 22nd, 2011

The Top 32 for this event is awesome.  Popular Decks like Samurais, Gravekeepers, Gladiator Beasts, and all sorts of Plant Synchro variants have made the cut to the Playoffs, but Decks like Blackwings, Scraps, and a host of surprise strategies like Flamvells, Zombies, T.G.’s, and Worms are also in contention!  This round we’ll see Johnathan Harrison take Blackwings against Jason Gilbert’s Doppel Synchro Deck.

Harrison started the Match with a hand of Book of Moon; Card Trooper; Allure of Darkness; Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind; Effect Veiler; and Icarus Attack.  He Summoned Trooper, and sent Royal Oppression, Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor, and Blackwing – Bora the Spear to the Graveyard from the top of his Deck to boost it to 1900 ATK, then Set 2 cards to his back row.

Gilbert Set a monster, and Set 2 cards to his back row.

Harrison drew another Icarus Attack, and then sent Dimensional Prison, Solemn Warning, and Blackwing – Kalut the Moonshadow to the Graveyard to boost Trooper.  Trooper attacked, hitting Gilbert’s Ryko, which destroyed Harrison’s Icarus Attack, sending Level Eater, Card Trooper, and Tuning to the Graveyard.  Harrison Set his second Icarus Attack and Gale, knowing Gilbert would be unlikely to predict a second Icarus.

Gilbert Set a monster.

Harrison boosted Trooper again, sending Seven Tools of the Bandit, Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn, and Dark Armed Dragon to the Graveyard.  He then drew Dimensional Prison and Mystical Space Typhoon with Allure of Darkness, removing Bora to complete Allure’s effect.  He Tributed Gale for Icarus, destroying Gilbert’s Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter and his Torrential Tribute.  Trooper made a direct attack for 1900 Battle Damage, and Harrison Set 2 more cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Gilbert activated Giant Trunade, and Harrison had no response: the Spell and Trap Card Zones were cleared.  Tuning got Gilbert Unknown Synchron from his Deck, and he sent Junk Synchron from his Deck to the Graveyard.  He Special Summoned Unknown Synchron, then discarded Dandylion to Special Summon The Tricky – that got him 2 Fluff Tokens.  He Tuned Unknown to a Fluff Token for Formula Synchron, drawing, then Tuned everything together to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon.  He lowered its Level to Special Summon Level Eater, then destroyed it and Card Trooper with Scrap Dragon’s effect.  The Dragon made a direct attack, and Gilbert Set 2 cards to his back row.

Harrison drew another Bora.  He activated Mystical Space Typhoon blind, destroying Gilbert’s Warning.  He then Normal Summoned Sirocco, and Special Summoned Bora in Defense Position to boost Sirocco’s ATK: Sirocco attacked over Scrap Dragon to destroy it!  Harrison Set Book and Prison.

Gilbert drew to 1 card in hand, with 1 card still Set in his back row.  Harrison had 2 cards Set in his back row, 2 monsters, and an in hand card. Gilbert passed.

Harrison drew Cards for Black Feathers and made a direct attack with Sirocco.

Gilbert drew, and flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Harrison’s Dimensional Prison.  He Normal Summoned Debris Dragon, and Harrison dropped Effect Veiler to negate the Dragon’s effect!  “That sucks,” remarked Gilbert.  Debris Dragon attacked to destroy Bora, and Gilbert Set his last card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Harrison drew Solemn Warning and destroyed Debris Dragon with an attack from Sirocco.  He Set Warning.

Gilbert tried to Summon Junk Synchron next turn, but when Harrison flipped over Solemn Warning Gilbert conceded!

A big play with Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn lets Johnathan Harrison overcome Jason Gilbert’s Scrap Dragon, and it’s all downhill from there!  One more win like that, and we’d be seeing Blackwings in the Top 16.

Gilbert opened the second Duel with a Set monster and 3 Set cards to his back row.

Harrison had a hand of Allure of Darkness; Gorz the Emissary of Darkness; Nobleman of Crossout; Blackwing – Bora the Spear; Icarus Attack; and Solemn Warning.  He removed Gilbert’s Set Level Eater with Nobleman, then Set Bora and 2 cards to his back row.  He lost his Solemn Warning in the End Phase to Gilbert’s Dust Tornado, but still had Icarus Attack.

Gilbert Special Summoned Cyber Dragon next turn and attacked: with his Bora now threatened, Harrions Tributed it for Icarus Attack, destroying his opponent’s Dimensional Prison and Torrential Tribute.  Cyber Dragon made a direct attack against Harrison’s now-empty field, and Harrison Special Summoned Gorz with a 2100 ATK Emissary of Darkness Token!  Gilbert Set a single Spell or Trap.

Harrison drew Blackwing – Blizzard the far North.  He turned his Emissary to Defense Position, and attacked over Cyber Dragon with Gorz.

Gilbert cleared the field with Dark Hole.

Harrison drew Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind, and Normal Summoned Blizzard to Special Summon Bora from his Graveyard.  He Tuned them together, Synchro Summoning Blackwing Armed Wing for a direct attack.  Gilbert was down to 5100 Life Points.

Gilbert Set a second Spell or Trap.

Harrison drew Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo and attacked again with Armed Wing.

Gilbert Set a third Spell or Trap.

Harrison drew Blackwing – Kalut the Moonshadow, and attacked with Armed Wing.  It hit, and Harrison discarded Kalut to finish the Duel and the Match!

Johnathan Harrison makes quick work of Jason Gilbert and his Doppel Synchro Deck, as a lack of monsters leaves Gilbert high and dry.  Harrison moves on to the Top 16!
