Deck Profile: Nick Bottino’s Psychic Deck

June 19th, 2011

The new Psychic monsters in Extreme Victory have a lot of power that has gone unnoticed by most Duelists. But Nick Bottino is one Duelist who did notice that power. Nick Bottino’s Psychic Deck doesn’t shoot for an OTK with Mind Master like some Psychic Decks do, and instead uses simple Psychic combos that will propel him into the lead during a Duel. A new Psychic monster from Extreme Victory, Serene Psychic Witch, is the heart of Bottino’s Deck. To make sure he gets his Witch to the field, Bottino uses 2 copies of Giant Rat to search it out.

Whenever his Witch is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, whether it’s in battle or by a card effect, Bottino can choose a monster in his Deck to Special Summon in his next Standby Phase. That lets him set up his next turn so that it plays out exactly how he wants it to.

All of Bottino’s favorite plays involve choosing monsters to Summon with Serene Psychic Witch. If Bottino chooses to Special Summon Psychic Jumper, he can use its effect to swap another Psychic monster he controls with a bigger monster that his opponent controls! He can even swap his opponent a Psychic monster that he Normal Summons on the same turn that his Psychic Jumper is Special Summoned, including another copy of Serene Psychic Witch. Stealing a Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En with Psychic Jumper will frequently be a fatal blow to a Six Samurai Duelist.

If his opponent has no big monsters for him to steal, Bottino can take Destructotron from his Deck with the effect of his Serene Psychic Witch. “It’s like a Harpie’s Feather Duster,” he told me. With Destructotron on the field, Bottino can destroy all of his opponent’s face-down Spell and Trap Cards at the cost of just 1000 Life Points per card.

If Bottino is planning for a Synchro Summon on the turn after Serene Psychic Witch is destroyed, he can choose to Special Summon Esper Girl instead. Esper Girl is a Level 2 Tuner that will add a free card to Bottino’s hand after it’s Special Summoned to the field and then sent to the Graveyard, so it’s the perfect monster to Tune with after it’s Special Summoned by the effect of his Serene Psychic Witch.

Bottino also likes to Normal Summon his Silent Psychic Wizard (which lets him remove a monster from his Graveyard, which he can Special Summon to the field when his Wizard is sent to the Graveyard), and then Tune the Wizard with his Esper Girl. Then, he not only gets to Summon a Synchro Monster, but he also Special Summons a monster with his Wizard and adds a card to hand with the effect of Esper Girl.

Since almost all of Bottino’s monsters are EARTH monsters, he has a lot of options when Synchro Summoning a monster. For example, when he’s Synchro Summoning a Level 6 monster by Tuning Esper Girl with Silent Psychic Wizard, he can choose to Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, Naturia Barkion, or Psychic Nightmare.

Although Brionac and Barkion have killer effects that will sometimes win Bottino the Duel, there’s also an advantage to choosing Psychic Nightmare. Not only can it become a 3400 ATK monster if he correctly guesses the type of a card in his opponent’s hand, but it can also be used with the Miracle Synchro Fusion in Bottino’s Deck.

By removing a Psychic Synchro Monster and another Psychic Monster from his field or Graveyard, Bottino can Summon Ultimate Axon Kicker with Miracle Synchro Fusion. Magical Android, Psychic Nightmare, Psychic Lifetrancer, and Thought Ruler Archfiend all fit the bill for being removed with Miracle Synchro Fusion and helping to Summon Ultimate Axon Kicker.

Once Ultimate Axon Kicker hits the field, it can be tough for an opponent to make a recovery. Axon Kicker can’t be destroyed, and pierces through opposing monsters. Plus, it gives Bottino Life Points every time it destroys a monster that has Attack Points.

“I love piercing through Dandylion Tokens for the win,” he told me. Duelists don’t usually see an indestructible 2900 ATK monster coming at the drop of a Spell Card, and have a tough time dealing with it once it hits the field.

One of the strongest cards in Bottino’s Deck is Emergency Teleport. “There’s something about how versatile Teleport is. I can use it to Synchro Summon, attack directly when they don’t expect it, or, in a pinch, grab Psychic Jumper to steal a monster. I find that players don’t use Solemn Warning on Teleport, because they think they can just use Solemn Warning on any monster I’m going to Synchro Summon. They don’t realize I can use the Jumper I get to steal their monster instead,” he told me.

Although he narrowly missed out on a Top 32 finish, Duelists who didn’t know what Bottino’s Deck was capable of had a tough time fighting against it in this weekend’s tournament. That element of surprise helped give Bottino the edge he needed.
