Round 1 Feature Match: Tyler Clark “Rex” vs. “Misty” Chris Lockwood
Chris Lockwood traveled here this weekend from Syracuse, New York, piloting a Deck built around the unique interactions between Divine Wind of Mist Valley, Reborn Tengu, and Genex Ally Birdman. His opponent is a Frog Monarch Duelist from Hampstead, New Hampshire: Tyler Clark. We’ve never seen the Divine Wind Tengu Deck in Feature Match action, so this should be a cool one!
Clark got us started with a Set monster on his field.
Lockwood opened by banishing Clark’s Set Spirit Reaper with Nobleman of Crossout, then Set a Spell/Trap and Summoned Mist Valley Falcon. He attacked for 2000 Battle Damage, bouncing back his Set Spell/Trap, and dropped Clark to 6000 Life Points. He Set 2 Spells/Traps, and activated Swords of Revealing Light. If this went to plan, Lockwood could keep replaying that Swords with his Falcon to control the Duel and keep Clark from ever attacking.
Clark Set another monster.
Lockwood attacked to bounce back his Swords, and Mist Valley Falcon destroyed Clark’s Reborn Tengu. Clark Special Summoned another Tengu from his Deck. In Main Phase 2, Lockwood activated Swords again.
Clark activated Creature Swap, trading his Tengu for the Falcon.
Lockwood drew and passed.
Clark Summoned Swap Frog, using its effect to send Treeborn Frog from his Deck to his Graveyard. He returned Swap Frog to his hand.
Lockwood Set a Spell/Trap and passed.
Clark Special Summoned back his Swap Frog, then Tributed it for Mobius the Frost Monarch. Lockwood flipped Solemn Warning to negate the Summon, paying 2000 Life Points. Both Duelists now had 6000 Life Points.
Lockwood’s Swords of Revealing Light was destroyed as its time ran out. He flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to return his Falcon back to his hand, then Summoned Winged Rhynos. Tengu attacked, and Clark Special Summoned Battle Fader to protect his Life Points.
Clark Special Summoned Treeborn Frog again, then Normal Summoned Swap Frog. Lockwood flipped Torrential Tribute, bouncing his Rhynos back to his hand. Clark sent Ronintoadin to his Graveyard, then lost his field. He ended his turn with 5 cards in hand.
Lockwood drew Genex Blastfan and Normal Summoned it. It attacked for 1600 Battle Damage, and Clark Special Summoned Tragoedia! Lockwood Set a Spell/Trap and ended.
Clark Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, and Normal Summoned his last Tengu. Tragoedia attacked over Blastfan for 800 Battle Damage, and Tengu made a direct attack to drop Lockwood to 3500 Life Points. In the End Phase, Lockwood Special Summoned Blastfan with Call of the Haunted, using Blastfan’s effect to search his Deck for Genex Ally Birdman! He added it to his hand.
Lockwood activated Dark Hole to clear the field, then followed up with Monster Reborn, Special Summoning Genex Blastfan again – that got him another Genex Ally Birdman. He Normal Summoned Mist Valley Falcon, then Set a Spell/Trap, attacking with Blastfan and Falcon to reduce Clark to 800 Life Points. He bounced back his Spell/Trap with Falcon, then Set it again.
Clark Special Summoned Treeborn Frog, and Tributed it for Enemy Controller in his Standby Phase. He took control of Mist Valley Falcon, then Special Summoned Treeborn again. He Tributed it for another Enemy Controller! He brought back Treeborn Frog a third time, and attacked for victory with both monsters!
Tyler Clark takes a narrow victory in the first Duel, using double Enemy Controller and triple Treeborn Frog to take the first win of the tournament!
Lockwood opened Duel 2 with Divine Wind of Mist Valley, and Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu. He returned it to his hand to Special Summon Genex Ally Birdman, triggering both Divine Wind’s effect and Tengu’s. Lockwood Special Summoned another Tengu, along with Genex Ally Blastfan. Blastfan got him another Birdman, and he Tuned Birdman to Tengu to Synchro Summon Ancient Fairy Dragon! He activated its effect to destroy Divine Wind, getting another from his Deck. He activated the second Divine Wind, then returned Blastfan to his hand for his second Birdman. That triggered Divine Wind’s effect, and Lockwood Special Summoned Psi-Blocker, blocking Dark Hole with Psi-Blocker’s ability. He then used Ancient Fairy Dragon’s second effect to Special Summon Blastfan again! He got his third Birdman from his Deck with Blastfan, then Tuned his on-field Birdman and his Blastfan for another Ancient Fairy Dragon. He destroyed and replaced Divine Wind again, going to 10,000 Life Points and activating the third Divine Wind. He returned Psi-Blocker to his hand for Genex Ally Birdman, and Special Summoned Mist Valley Falcon from his Deck with Divine Wind. The second Ancient Fairy Dragon let him Special Summon Psi-Blocker, and this time he used its effect to block Clark from playing Swap Frog next turn. He Tuned Falcon and Birdman together to Synchro Summon Mist Valley Thunder Lord, and used its effect to bounce his Psi-Blocker back to his hand. He Set a Spell/Trap and ended with 4 cards in hand, 2 Ancient Fairy Dragons and Mist Valley Thunder Lord on the field, with Divine Wind active and Typhoon Set. Lockwood had a total of 9 cards at his disposal.
Clark Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, and Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu. He attacked to trade Cyber Dragon off in battle against Ancient Fairy Dragon, destroying both. He Tributed Tengu for Enemy Controller, still in the Battle Phase, targeting Thunder Lord. Clark responded by Chaining Thunder Lord’s effect, returning Ancient Fairy Dragon back to his Extra Deck. Clark Special Summoned another Tengu, and ended his turn, returning Thunder Lord.
Lockwood drew Mist Valley Soldier, then Summoned Psi-Blocker to use its effect, naming Reborn Tengu. He returned Psi-Blocker to his hand with Thunder Lord, getting another Psi-Blocker from his Deck. This time he named Battle Fader. Thunder Lord attacked to destroy Reborn Tengu, and Psi-Blocker attacked for 1200 Battle Damage. The Duel stood at 10,000 Life Points to 5400.
Clark Set a monster.
Lockwood activated Psi-Blocker’s effect to block Battle Fader, and Clark Chained Effect Veiler’s effect to negate Psi-Blocker’s ability. Lockwood bounced Psi-Blocker back to his hand with Thunder Lord, Special Summoning Mist Valley Falcon from his Deck with Divine Wind. He Normal Summoned Psi-Blocker, this time calling Treeborn Frog, and attacked into Sangan with Mist Valley Falcon, returning his Set Mystical Space Typhoon to his hand. Clark got Spirit Reaper with his Sangan’s effect. Lockwood attacked with Psi-Blocker for 1200 Battle Damage, and struck for 3100 more with Thunder Lord. He Set 2 Spell/Trap Cards. Clark had 1100 Life Points left.
Clark Set a monster.
Lockwood used Psi-Blocker next turn to call Battle Fader again, then Summoned Mist Valley Soldier. It attacked Clark’s Set Spirit Reaper to bounce it away, and Lockwood ended the Duel with another big shot from Mist Valley Thunder Lord!
An explosive opening hand sees Chris Lockwood open the second Duel with a whopping 9 cards, including 3 Synchro Monsters, and Tyler Clark just can’t battle back! Clark would open the third Duel.
Clark opened with a single Set Spell or Trap.
Lockwood Set 2 cards, then Summoned and attacked with Mist Valley Falcon, bouncing back a Set card and hitting for 2000 Battle Damage. He Set a card again, losing it to Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.
Clark activated Soul Exchange, and Lockwood negated it with Solemn Judgment.
Lockwood drew Mist Valley Soldier and Summoned Reborn Tengu. Tengu made a direct attack, and when Mist Valley Falcon followed suit it bounced away Tengu. That let him Special Summon another Tengu in its place, but Clark responded with Gorz the Emissary of Darkness! He Special Summoned his Emissary of Darkness Token with 1700 ATK.
Time was called on Clark’s turn. There would be a maximum of 5 turns played after this one, at which point the Match would be decided by Life Points. The Duel stood at 2300 Life Points to 4000, with Lockwood narrowly leading. Clark attacked over Falcon with Gorz, dropping Lockwood to 3300 Life Points. The Emissary then attacked Tengu, and Lockwood got another from his Deck in Defense Position. Clark Set a Spell or Trap.
Lockwood drew Divine Wind of Mist Valley, and activated it. He Normal Summoned Mist Valley Soldier, and in response Clark blasted him with Treacherous Trap Hole! Lockwood’s Tengu and Mist Valley Soldier were both destroyed, and he immediately conceded.
A valiant effort with some slick moves from Chris Lockwood’s Divine Wind Tengu Deck, but Tyler Clark captures the victory!
