July 17th, 2011

11-year-old Matthew Wilkinson from Seattle is here this weekend attending his first event bigger than a Regional, and so far he’s seeing great success! He and Cole Agan both ended the Swiss Rounds with a 6-1 record, earning spots in the Top 4. Now, they’re up against one another, each with a chance at a Dragon Duel Championship win.

Agan started off Duel 1 by Summoning Summoner Monk. Switched it to Defense Position and then used its effect to discard Dark Hole from his hand and Special Summon Scrap Beast from his Deck. He Tuned Summoner Monk with his Scrap Beast to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon, and then Set 2 cards to his back row.

Wilkinson opened up with Solemn Warning, Thunder King Rai-Oh, D.D. Warrior Lady, 2 copies of Elemental Hero Neos Alius, and Mystical Space Typhoon. He Set D.D. Warrior Lady, Solemn Warning, and Mystical Space Typhoon, then passed his turn.

Agan activated Scrapyard next turn. He used its effect to add a Scrap Goblin from his Deck to his hand, and then tried to Normal Summon Scrap Chimera; but Wilkinson flipped Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate the Chimera’s Summon! Agan Special Summoned Scrap Orthros next, and used its effect to have it destroy itself, so that he’d be able to return Scrap Chimera from his Graveyard to his hand. Next, Agan chose to destroy his own face-down Fiendish Chain and Wilkinson’s face-down Mystical Space Typhoon, and Wilkinson Chained the Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Agan’s face-down Solemn Judgment! Agan attacked Wilkinson’s face-down D.D. Warrior Lady with his Scrap Dragon, and D.D. Warrior Lady banished both monsters with her effect.

Wilkinson drew Solemn Warning next turn. He Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and then attacked directly with it, dropping Agan down to 6100 Life Points. Wilkinson Set Solemn Warning before ending his turn.

Agan tried to Normal Summon Scrap Chimera next turn, but lost out to another Solemn Warning.

Wilkinson drew Honest! He Normal Summoned Elemental Hero Neos Alius and then attacked directly with Neos Alius and Rai-Oh, dropping Agan down to 2300 Life Points.

Agan Set a monster and passed.

Wilkinson drew Gemini Spark next turn! He activated it, Tributing his Alius to destroy Wilkinson’s face-down Scrap Goblin. He drew Dark Hole from his Deck with the effect of his Spark. Next, Wilkinson Normal Summoned Elemental Hero Neos Alius from his hand. Direct attacks from Neos Alius and Rai-Oh wiped out the last 2300 of Agan’s Life Points!

Matthew Wilkinson overcomes a first-turn Scrap Dragon to win the first Duel with his Hero Deck! Cole Agan will be going first in Duel 2!

Next, Agan activated Scrapyard to search his Deck for a Scrap Beast to add to his hand. He Summoned it to the field and then Tuned his Tengu with his Scrap Beast to Summon another Scrap Dragon! Wilkinson instantly conceded, knowing that Agan would use Scrap Dragon’s effect to destroy his face-down Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo, and that the 2 direct attacks from the Scrap Dragons would finish him off!

Wilkinson Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and Set Seven Tools of the Bandit in Main Phase 2, and Agan flipped Royal Decree in Wilkinson’s End Phase.

Agan Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu and ended his turn.

Wilkinson drew Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn. He attacked and destroyed Tengu with Stratos, and then Agan Special Summoned another one from his Deck in Defense Position. Rai-Oh destroyed that one, and Agan had no more Tengus left to Summon.
